Dr. Peter Lanchidi will address a debate within American Freemasonry that concerned the question of sectarianism and the meaning of religion and universality within the Masonic brotherhood. The polemic pitted universalist Jewish (and non-Jewish) brethren against conservative Christian Masons. The skirmish evolved from a petition authored by Jacob Norton, a Jewish Mason in Boston, and presented to the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts in 1851. In this webinar, Dr. Lanchidi will present the arguments from each side, the individuals and journals involved in the debate, and the meaning and relevance of Freemasonry for American Jewry.
