Fifteen years after having abdicated the throne to marry the woman he loved-Wallis Simpson-King Edward VIII, now the Duke of Windsor, published his memoirs. But whilst preparing the manuscript for his published and mostly ghostwritten book, the Duke also produced a private manuscript for posterity. This was written in his own words and with an uninhibited frankness. Once a King: The Lost Memoir of Edward VIII reproduces this uncrowned King's previously unseen writing, including much that he could or would not write for publication in 1951. Jane Marguerite Tippett weaves together Edward's writing alongside newly uncovered interviews with the Duke and Duchess, diary entries from ghostwriter Charles Murphy and other sources. Together this forms an extraordinary new portrait of one of the most famous characters in modern royal history and his recollections and innermost feelings, particularly around the abdication of 1936.

I’m pleased this is a more balanced discussion on King Edward VIII. So much has been made of his helping and admiration of Hitler. It’s something I feel which has been sensationalized for profit. It’s never mentioned that many politicians and aristocracy were for appeasement too. I would have liked to hear more, if Edward was seen as intelligent, as so much has been made about him being boring to be around! This I feel is a more realistic treatment of the man. I will look forward to your book. As you have accessed material others glossed over, as it didn’t serve their narrative. I’m sure WWI and its sights greatly affected him. Anyone living through that war, certainly wouldn’t want a repeat!

I am fascinated by this couple and enjoyed this very much! Subbed to this channel, and I will look for your book, Ms. Tippett. Thank you so much for writing it and talking about it. Among other things, the charges of "Nazi!" do get so tiresome, and it's so wonderful to get your perspective about it. Thank you.

Fascinating. I have read every book and this was so very interesting. How to reconcile with some of Bloch’s observations though. Were they early proponents of controlling the narrative? I think no or they would have done a much better job. So sad that they worried about money their whole like and her jewels were worth over $39m alone.

What does the author think of Andrew Lownie’s book, “The Traitor King: The scandalous exile of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor”? It is not tabloid journalism.

There are some things in there that can be interpreted in a few different ways. I do think he was a stupid, naive, uneducated man unable to determine consequences of his actions. Like his great great nephew Harry. I do not think he ever would have defined himself as a traitor and I think that requires some level of intent. I think he thought that in the event his brother was stupid enough to do the wrong thing he would swan in and do the right thing. I do not think he was ever trying to overturn his brother.

Seriously speaking about someone who deserves very little respect. Read Traitor King or the actual Marburg filed
