A music lover who plays a Fender Strat, and a Taylor acoustic....but who still wishes he had a lute and knew how to play it. There just is no other instrument that is as 'mentally' relaxing, as the Lute.

This is the classical Renaissance music, polyphonic and complex , natheleess eek relaxing and not less apt to accompany one's literary studies than the medieval one.

I'm currently going through another wave of being sad that the ren faire I work at as a bard is still 3 months away, but this and playing my lute is really helping (though it's not the same without a crowd and the royal court threatening to throw me in the stocks if I play another more bawdy drinking song)

A refreshingly "direct" recording without the misleading cloud of reverb that envelops and thus distorts so many lute recordings.

I believe these are arrangements played on the guitar, and whilst the pieces are beautiful they do not compare with the lute arrangements in many ways.

De la belle musique ! Interprétée , je crois, à la guitare. Illustrée d'un tableau qui me semble de la Renaissance italienne (à noter le beau coffre "à la Romaine", et la pose nonchalante du musicien, assis ...par terre: la Renaissance fut une époque de liberté.) Dommage que rien ne soit dit ni des compositeurs, ni de l'interprète, ni du tableau.

If i understand the definition of monophonic: sounds like it, basically one main melody, and one additional background. I rarely can catch a note that couldn't be performed by a single lute player along with his voice. Or two lute players together.

Exactly. This sounds like it was played by a machine rather than a human being. The slavish adherence to meter and lack of dynamic variation in these performances rob them of all humanity, creativity and warmth. If this was performed on a lute, it's the most dead and perfunctory lute performance I've ever heard. There's more to making music than just playing the notes without mistakes!

That's _Es ist ein Ros entsprungen,_ usually translated as "Lo, how a Rose e'er blooming", from some unknown German composer, and best known in the 1609 harmonization by Michael Praetorius. Here in Austria, we sing it every Christmas. It's one of my favorite carols.
