Since the 1960’s, plans were on the drawing board for a rail link to JFK Airport. Many plans were considered, and for years there was an ill-fated subway connection called “The Train to the Plane.” It was long and cost more than a regular subway ride, and was unpopular with travelers.
During the 1990’s, a plan was created to build an AirTrain which would connect the with the Long Island Rail Road and NYC subways at Jamaica, as well as the NYC Subway in Howard Beach, with JFK Airport. While initially more ambitious, with plans to connect directly to Manhattan and LaGuardia Airports, the plans were scaled back and the first train operated to JFK on December 17, 2003.
