Problem solved !!! When the Gib is rotated from being machined on it's back to it's 60 deg position , the angle changes . Compound Angle . Similar to a 60 deg threading tool . In a flat tool holder it will cut 60 deg , in an inclined tool holder it will not !!!

I'm a simple man Max, and I always look for a simple solution. I would have cleaned the parts well, then superglued and clamped the gib in place, then after the glue had set used the dovetail cutter to lightly skim the gib. Engineers out there are going to hate me for this, but it saves my brain exploding with all the maths. 😊

I'm thinking that the error may be due to the slope of the dovetail. The gib is parallel to the sloped face yet you are measuring the gap across the width square to the compound. When correcting the thickness of the gib you are measuring 30degrees off square to the other measurement. If your delta was 0.065 thou square, it would have to be cos(30)=0.866 corrected to 0.056.

I was initially thinking maybe the gib was a banana to begin with. But then you discovered the issue with the mag chuck. The next thing I though was that you machined down the thickness of the wrong end of the gib. That would explain the near doubling of the error.

My friend, I’ve been watching for this Episode and 4 before this session all has made since. I have made a number of dove slides. And never did ever use Unsymmetrical gib, angled on top / bottom yes but the parts that do the sliding always the same thickness. End to end Now then by correcting the slides (dove tail) by milling them true. Your overall spacing between the two rails has increased. Thus, you WILL need to increase the thickness of the gib, yes a new one. And it will become all better.😮

Compound base component across dovetails parallel within 0.0002" (0.006 or 6 micron) is Impressive on any milling machine, possibly, in hindsight, nipping the Gib on X would help, but splitting hairs here? The problem was due to the incomplete equation you used. The angle of the dangle is equal to the means of the extremes. Using that complete equation would have eliminated all of these problems. Actually, at one point, when you were machining the gib and said that it felt to you that you should be taking more off the other end, might have been correct. I thought that the gib was backwards on the mill, and milling off that amount was going to double the error. Well, maybe that was the problem, or not. I can’t say as not being there, but when doubling an error, it may not be a measurement problem at all, but a placement one. I’ve done it myself, and was totally confused as to what happened until I retraced the exact steps I took, and realized what I had done.

I think at 7:30 you uncover the discrepancy but assumed the wrong end was too thick. I reckon it is the thin end that is too thick but a minute or two further on you say you're sure it is the thick end that's too thick. When you push it forward the gib goes in 45mm and pulled back it goes in 48mm (ie goes in further and so the gap must have been bigger - the 6 thou wear + however much you machined from the gib). So with it pushed forward and the gib gone in 45mm, the end of the gib nearest the camera must have loose play (ie the thick end is now too thin). The numbers back this up too (6-7 thou blew out to 13).
@swanvalleymachineshop

Hi Max, scratching my head, only 2 things I can think of, cosine error of DTI or dial gauge. Vertical height linearity of gauge pins at each end. Time to fit a DRO on the mill, give you exact travel measurements.
@swanvalleymachineshop
@swanvalleymachineshop Жыл бұрын
The sine bar backs up any travel error . It would take a lot of cosine error to get those differences , then i would have had inconsistent results when double & triple checking . Vertical height linearity is just under 1/2 thou , not enough to get completely different results i would expect . I am still at a loss on this one !!! That mill & the JFMT lathe will be getting Easson DRO'S fitted , hopefully next year . 👍 Just went back & re measured . On it's back in the mag chuck the taper is a different angle to when it sits rolled over to a 60 deg angle . Must take the compound angle .

Hi Max, mystery. Back in the mid nineties my machinery dealer south of the river Perth told me I was living in the Dark Ages without a DRO, bought an Accurite dro and installed it on my BP clone not cheap back then. Here in Philippines I have dro's on my mill and lathe with a lot more features. Googled sine bars and one article said only accurate between 15 and 45degrees for reasons above my pay grade.

@swanvalleymachineshop
@swanvalleymachineshop Жыл бұрын
That opposite side is less than 1/2 a thou different from the other side . In between the dovetails with pins will give the same result as the method used . Wrong equation. The angle of the dangle, divided by the heat of the meat and then added to the throb of the knob should sort out the error. 😉😜😂👍 Unless of course it’s a compound angle of the dangle, then you use the differential equation. The angle of the dangle is inversely proportional to the heat of the meat, provided that the maxis of the axis, and the gravity of the cavity, remain constant.
