This was not live. The video, yes, but the audio was clearly reworked in the studio. The tone is way too warm and lacks all of the inherent shrillness and breathiness of concert audio; that includes DeGarmo's harmonies and the rest of the band as a whole, both vocally and musically.

I grew up in Seattle during this time. Even took a few lessons from David Kyle but I couldn’t afford more than two. He had long grey hair and a little pot belly. 😝. All my friends wanted to sing like Geoff back then. We’d walk down the middle of Southcenter Mall and sing Queensryche lyrics at the top of our lungs. People would stare, shake their heads and frown. Such good times. Thank you Queensryche! For adding more magic to my teen years.

Geoff's combination of tone, range and vibrato made him virtually untouchable in the 80s and 90s. I was a musician on the metal scene in New Orleans back in the 80s and 90s and virtually every singer that I came across back then aspired to be Geoff Tate. Great reaction btw! Hope that you venture down into the Queensryche rabbit hole!

I went to see Dio and Queensryche were the support act. Normally I’d have been in the bar, but I always tried to hear a song by them before heading upstairs. I’d never heard of this band, and this was the first of two nights in Birmingham U.K.. I am not a musician, but I recognise excellence, and the whole band was just top notch, right out of the box. But Geoff’s vocals blew me away. So much so that the second night, I went with a friend and almost literally dragged him to see the support band, much to his dismay. He thanked me for it later. Imagine, Geoff Tate, followed by RJD….followed by the same again the next night. Bliss.

Geoff Tate of Queensryche, Ann Wilson and her youngest sister Nancy Wilson, the late Layne Staley of Alice in Chains and the late Chris Cornell of Soundgarden lived in Metro Seattle in the 1970s. They were students of the late singing coach David Kyle. Marilyn Horne and Frederica von Stade, who moved to my hometown area the San Francisco Bay Area 🌁, are his other students. Written by Geoffrey Tate and Chris DeGarmo. Unfortunately, guitarist DeGarmo quit. Queensryche has not been the same since it fired Geoffrey Tate. Suggested video 📹: Queensryche performs Queen of the Reich live.

Thank you so much for this, I am a baritone like tate and have his range. YOU are the first coach that explained this in a way that i was hanging on to all your words. I understand what you mean about loving that note. When you nail it and the acousting in your own hear are in the perfect spot...it just rings like a bell inside the head and becomes so easy to hold it. So many coaches kept using the falsetto term and I always felt it was more than that. I have Noticed that Baritones tend to have the higher of the ranges

Love Tate, Halford, Dickenson from the 80’s into the 90’s with their sustained high note vocal abilities… A great example from the 2000’s to today is Myles Kennedy - who seemingly effortlessly can do the same thing Live with 4 octave range and breath control!💪 He is an ardent student of Bel Canto techniques and has only gotten better with age, rather than the other way around with most ‘rock’ vocalists. For Live - AlterBridge anything from Royal Albert Hall concert with Parallax orchestra will give a beautiful example of late 40’s Myles sounding so great!

Not today or since can pull this off the way Geoff did at that time...not even Geoff himself. A combination of technique, youth, talent, and the moment. I'm at least glad this performance and band get the accolades today for what they were back then...an absolute masterpiece.

Hi. New to your channel. Some more info on Geoff Tate for you. His aunt was a professional opera singer. He trained in opera starting at 8 years old, I believe. If you want to see/hear more, watch their pinnacle album "Operation: Mindcrime" performed live as "Operation: Livecrime" from 1991. It's a concept album, PHENOMENAL. This song was performed in their encore along with "Queen of the Reich" which is another mind-blowing performance. Geoff still tours, currently with Adrian Vandenberg. Thanks for this reaction!

Love your analysis and appreciation of Geoff's off-the-charts vocals! This is the original lineup of the band, which is MAGIC! This is a song off their FIRST full-length album. Geoff stays in his higher register primarily in their first couple of albums, and then brings in more if his lower register later on. Whatever notes he sings are just spectacular! EVERY member if the band is fantastic! I really enjoy vocal coaches and other professionals' breakdowns and observations. Very informative and interesting! And yes, the three E5's (especially that second one -- what tone!) are something Geoff's known for. He has amazing tone, pitch, vibrato, expression...he just has it ALL! And, he's a baritone! You might want to try these songs to hear some samples of their diversity: "THE KILLING WORDS" and "I WILL REMEMBER", and "DELLA BROWN" all from MTV Unplugged ,1992. "ANYBODY LISTENING?" "THE WHISPER" "JET CITY WOMAN" "ONE MORE TIME" "ANOTHER RAINY NIGHT" "I DREAM IN INFRARED " "ROADS TO MADNESS " ALL of their concept album "OPERATION: MINDCRIME"! Just to get you started. And there are SO many more, it's hard to pick. Hope we hear more Queensryche reactions from you!

First of all. Great reaction. Thanks for sharing this.❤️ 1.) Geoff Tate is an Unicorn. Unmatched. Untouchable. Unreachable. 2.) This E5s. This exactly is how an E5 should sounds and sung. Unbelievable good. 3 .) Chris DeGarmo. Songwriter and Lead Guitarist. Have you noticed his Backup Vocals? Chris DeGarmo for me is the greatest Guitar player of all time that ever picked up a Guitar. 3.) Operation Mindcrime is the greatest Album of all time. Operation LIVEcrime is OM played all Songs in a row. It's an Concept Album. Please check out the Story of it. And the Story behind. It worth it. 4.) Silent Lucidity. This Queensryche Song is from their 1991 Album Empire. In this Song Geoff Tate sounds very different to this one. And you can hear what rich Voice this Guy has. Orchestration by nothing other than Micheal Kamen! Unbelievable good! 5.) We Queensryche Fans ar called: Rychers.

I agree with every single word you said!! From a fellow Rycher. P.S. I used to have a personalized license plate that said "I Ryche U"

And to think, he was discovered at a house party by some of the band members were at. Partying and singing along to a Rush album. Was astonished they thought he could sing 🤯🍻🤘

Pretty much anything off of Rage for Order is worth hearing. London, Neue Regel, I Dream in Infra Red, I will Remember are all a great experience.

Great reaction, to an amazing performance. Tate was peerless back then. Now you can go on to Yannis Papadopoulos' vocal cover of Nightwish's Ghost Love Score. There you will have some technique to dig through :-)

Pretty sure that was one of the encore songs. Tate was Halford and Dickinson rolled into one.
