That’s why in the end. It matters what type of following you have for the film for yourself. Growing an audience like you and I are doing is going to be the best way to promote ourselves. If people love you and me they will love our work. Or if we are doing work specific to a niche audience out there then we can that work with those people and they can follow the film and watch it when it comes out. It’s all about social media and the following

Thanks for keeping the truth train rolling! Your channel is such an asset to this community. Appreciate the shout out to my vid which reveals the down & dirty on what some indie films really make in 2021. I meant to say this in my video, but distributors aren't coming to rescue you or your film. Not their job...ours. With channels like yours and a commitment to sharing the brutal "truth", we can arm ourselves with the tools necessary for a fighting chance at success. Keep up the important work, J Horton!

Love your videos man. I've learned a lot from your info....I have a deal on the table for $6,000 advance with 10k cap, 3 yr with additional 3yr option, 50/50...is this a good deal?
@JHorton
@JHorton 2 жыл бұрын
I do not know you individual circumstances, but generally speaking 6k isn't a lot and it's a good bet that's all you'll ever see. If it's super low budget like under 10k, this might be fine. More than that, I'm not so sure. But that said things are tough out there and I know a lot of movies that never clear 6k. 50/50 is not a great split. I would personally never take anything below 70. Unless it was a MAJOR distributor with some marketing muscle behind it. 3 years isn't a bad term.

alex ferarri runs a fb group called Predatory Distributors and how to avoid them. There's a lot of filmmakers in there and other distributors that give great specific advice about stuff like this. They even talk about specific distributors. It's a good resource if you're vetting distributors.

J, great info as always- question on why you chose "50k" as the number, a film for 100k or 150k with no names (lets say hypothetically) aren't they gonna have even more issues recouping their budget with marketing fees and what not, unless your thinking 100k-150k is a far superior product (Which i dont think is always the case).
@JHorton
@JHorton Жыл бұрын
I'm just talking numbers. Not accounting for talent or lack thereof. In the exact same hands, a 150k movie is gonna be better than that same filmmaker doing it for 50k. Assuming it's all onscreen. Once you get over 50, generally speaking that's where production value or name talent attachments move a film beyond the bottom of the barrel stuff that could have a higher market value. And of course there are movies made for more that are worse... I'm saying if all else is =. I'm speaking in generalities.
@eventsource101
@eventsource101 Жыл бұрын
@@JHorton So you think after 100k, assuming the quality is better, a distirbutor is going to work harder on the film since the quality is better? Trying to figure out where the extra profit/return is gonna come in to play here.
@JHorton
@JHorton Жыл бұрын
if the movie is good and marketable. Honestly , it all comes down to that when catching the eye of higher level distributors. or small distributors putting in more effort. for me that requires more time and money which means a higher budget.

Someone told me that some platforms wont accept you if you are on multi platforms? Like if your on amazon the netflix wont take you etc... Is that true.. P.S Your channel is great..
@JHorton
@JHorton Жыл бұрын
there are some channels that want exclusivity like netflix. But for the most part channels don't care and the odds of a smaller indie even making it to a channel like netflix is slim... that said if you think you have a shot have your distributor submit to the bigger channels first.
@bluezy710
@bluezy710 Жыл бұрын
I see plenty of movies on Amazon that are on other platforms too. And your payout might be much better racking up revenue from a ton of smaller platforms than from 1 big exclusive platform. Netflix pays low nowadays, for example.
