If I may offer an explanation since I wrote a paper on this once. Tubes are very slow to change state compared to transistors. This means that if you "overdrive" either a tube or a transistor, they're going to react differently. Generally speaking, most transistors operating in audible ranges can go from the highest level to the lowest level (nearly) instantaneously whereas a tube will take a fraction of a second to make the same transition. This means that the output signal on an overdriven transistor will tend to deform square, whereas an overdriven tube will tend to deform sawtooth. The difference in these 2 sinusoidal shapes, if represented by a Fourier transform will show you that the square wave is the sum of all of the even harmonics of the root tone, whereas the sawtooth wave is the sum of all of the odd harmonics. In musical terms, the third harmonic is the "dominant" harmonic and the one you would most associate with the root tone and the harmonic most audible - aka: "Warm", and the 2nd harmonic will sound slightly dissonant aka: "Harsh". This is also why you can find a "slower" transistor and get it to sound "tube-like".

The second harmonic is just a perfect fifth from the fundamental, technically less dissonant than a major third (if you want to judge dissonance by simplicity of frequency ratios)

I’ve gotten to the 36 min mark, and all this time Josh’s Jag has been on the darker “Jazz” Neck pickup circuit. He thinks he’s on the bridge, but when the upper horn/bout square switch is up, the Jazz circuit is on, and the normal pickup selector switches are bypassed. This is why the tones are so drastically different between the two guitars....different style pickups notwithstanding, as Mr. Browne was using the “normal” circuit. Edit: yep, the above applied for the whole broadcast, so everything Josh played was played with the Neck pickup on the dark “Jazz” circuit. Cool show regardless.

I'm reading a book called "Chip War" by Chris Miller and there is some back story on tubes as this is a sort of monograph of the transistor. Fun fact- the term "debugging" comes from having to literally scape bugs of tube equipment (like military stuff, bomb sights, coms) because glowing tubes attracted bugs to them.

My electronics teacher told us about working on the Norad computer.. imagine a room in the Arctic that has air conditioning to keep the heat from the tubes down. Like 4-5 tubes per latching circuit, which is one single bit. And now I carry more computational power in my pocket. Old tube computers are wild.

I saw Ministry on tour in the 90s and my friend’s brother was their sound engineer, they had an entire bank of tube power amplifiers powering the PA system. Tube powered PA system. Amazing! Loudest and fattest bass I have ever heard in a concert by far. Ministry used a lot of digital samples and drum machines and keyboards, so the tube PA really warmed and fattened up the sound. It might not have had the fidelity of a regular PA but the way the sounds blended together was really musical.

I’ve been playing since I was 12, not to be a sap but I’m in my early 30’s now and I only had ever just used a wah and the amp(s) for everything because that was all I ever needed. Now over the last couple years trying to watch and learn everything I can and try stuff out I sincerely appreciate all of the content, humor, jams, and education you guys provide. I started basic with my board and it’s grown like everyone else’s but I’m pumped to put my first JHS pedal on there, support the channel and you guys and get down with the cause. I bought a Behringer Vintage Tube monster years ago and I modded it with a BitMo mod. It's great to use as a second channel for an amp if you crank the output and only add a slight amount of gain. I have the Koch Pedaltone, which is actually more than 'just' a pedal. It's a full tube pre-amp with no less than 4 12AX7 tubes and 4 footswitches to create 16 different settings. I love that thing. I've played it for 11 years and it never let me down. Thanks again, fun episode! I wanted to speak out in favor of tube pedals, and offer a constructive criticism. I've used a tube driver for years, and I've found that they're a mess with the gain up high, but super usable at lower gain settings- Gilmore and EJ seem to use lower gain settings, too. EJ's tone settings (both down all the way) make for a fabulous dirty boost in front of a marshall. I also wanted to give a shout-out for the SIB varidrive, which rules. That is all.

My drive section consists of: Cusack "More Louder" into,Tube Pilot Light gain into, SD-1 little bit more gain, into, Tube Driver little bit more gain. this gives me a lot of options from clean, to boosted clean, to light gain to Carlos Santana, and many combinations in between. I got the Behringer 911 vintage tube overdrive and it's the 1st pedal I've ever modded. Did the Bitmo mod and have changed to different tubes but still am not impressed with this 1. I use an older 3 knob Tube Driver thats been modded by Fromel with a bias knob. I change the tube in that trying different feels to it. Also have a newer 5 knob Tube Driver that I also experiment with changing tubes. The modded Driver is on my board and I'm running it at 18v for more headroom. Its pretty cool but its just 1 of 3 drives in the board. The others are a Alchemy modded Blues Driver and a Meat and 3 modded Soul Food. Lots of variable sounds to use and stack.

Vacuum tubes were used from 1907 onwards as the first electronic three terminal devices that allowed audio amplification. In 1947, John Bardeen, Walter Brattain and Bill Shockley invented the transistor, which is a solid state device ( first in Germanium, later in SIlicon, hence the place wher Shockley started his company was called "Silicon Valley" ) that has the same basic functionality. SInce transistors are more reliable , smaller, and have lower heat dissipation, transistors replaced vacuum tubes in almost all electronic circuits. Tubes only survived in very high end audio equipment ( including guitar amps) where the very small differences of the response curve is deemed important by some people, and in Russian jet fighters since vacuum tubes are not destroyed by the electromagnetic pulse of a nuclear detonation.

Close. William Shockley founded Shockley Semiconductor in Mountain View, CA after kind of burning his bridges at Bell Labs. Shockley was a tyrant though & drove away the 8 engineers he took with him to start his company. Those engineers went on to found Fairchild, Intel, AMD in the same area which led to naming the area 'silicon valley'.

I'm extremely impressed by all the Vox tube technology. Their Cooltron pedal series was a bit big, but the sound was fantastic. The Garage series is phenomenal as well. The Straight 6 is really nice, wide frequency spectrum, and can be used to replace a preamp (via effect return) and turn your Marshal or Fender amp into a Vox amp sound. And I've found that changing the tubes in them actually does change the response just like it does in your pre-amp, even if the tube isn't being run at full voltage. And their Valvetronix amps, which use a 12ax7 to emulate the compression and warmth of a real tube power section, are EXTREMELY nice. I blew the preamp section up in my Vox VR30R and rewired it so the input now just runs direct to the power section. You can't tell the difference between it and plugging your guitar into a 15W tube amp via the effects return jack.

Dude, I've only played the big Ben overdrive from those series, but I love it. It's been a staple on my board for years, even though it's so big. I'm thinking about trying some other pedals from the cooltron series, especially as many of them are pretty inexpensive now. I honestly think that one day people will realize how good they are and the prices will skyrocket. Doesn't matter too much because I'll never sell my big Ben. Also, I've never owned or played another drive pedal that does the big Ben "thing". I usually use it with the gain between 9 and 12 o'clock while pushing the volume to around 3 o'clock. Sometimes I'll crank the gain and that sounds cool too, but I like it lower gain stacking with other pedals. It's kind of my always on pedal and the tone control is great for handling different guitars well. The pedal beefs up the whole signal chain without being too muddy and never being too harsh. It adds a slight and slow feeling compression to your signal while you're playing, but still retains good dynamics. Btw, I mostly play through a vibrolux and an ac30. Do other tube pedals do all of that too? Let me know your thoughts and what cooltron pedal I should try next!

I had such regrets about not getting to watch more than the first third live, so getting to see the rest now was heavily anticipated, solely in hopes of getting the Josh take on a specific pedal. The AKAI SHRED-O-MATIC getting such time on the episode was personally fulfilling. It is one of my favorite pedals to talk about, where people listening to me don't know how to react. Hearing Josh basically matching my enthusiasm for it was validation I was never counting on. If it wasn't for that bizarre in/out reversal in the layout, I'd use it live a lot more... but it's still proven useful when re-amping recordings over the years. "That sounds great" it DOES, and considering all of the pedals from people like Two Notes that have come since, it's amazing that this is so under recognized.

The special thing about tube pedals is similar to the special thing about tube amps - responsiveness. You can adjust them so that they are very sensitive to your guitars volume control AND your picking dynamics. Just like early tube amps, they can get very dark when cranked. That's why some of them need treble boosters.

I gotta get this out. It's to good to not give it a try. I recently bought a $50 China tube stereo headphone amp. The 2 tubes it came with are 6J1. I put this in all the various places in my guitar signal chain. The tubie goodness improvement stunned me. I put in in the FX loop of a Blackstar HT5. WOW. Massive improvement. I then bought a matched pair of higher grade tubes. GE JAN 5654W. Swapped tubes. I really did not notice much difference. Just my experience with something odd placed in a guitar chain.

I was one of the 700 that bought the OC71 Germanium Boost. I admit I bought it purely because it was rare. I got the pedal and I wasn't immediately impressed and the pedal set on my pedal shelf for a while. I then tried it out as a treble boost in front of a Morning Glory and behind a Unicorn Blood Octave Fuzz. It was awesome. It really rounds out a Fuzz. That pedal now lives on my board.

good point - the fact is we have been programed with TUBE and analog till the cows come home . reality is not tube or analog . people need to be honest with themselves , stop using gear as a crutch / excuse . the gear is great but snobbing out , or judging others for what they play thru and i see this all the time really sucks .

I have to agree. I got a older bias knob modded Tube Driver that I run at 18v. I also experiment with different 12a_7 tubes. It could be an"X" or an "U" or even a "T". I use different X's ,U's,and T's just to hear differences. At this point I'm using a old RCA 12Au7 and may not switch for now. But I definitely agree with "MORE POWER".

I have the TC Tube Pilot. I’m almost positive it’s the Behringer Vintage Tube Overdrive V911 (a Tube Driver clone) sans the tone controls. It’s a great pedal, especially at the price point, and if you want tone coloring, just pair it with a cheap EQ pedal. Built like a tank, pretty board friendly, and changing out the tube can also change the character of the pedal as well (or so I’ve heard; I still have the original tube). It’s a great poor man’s Tube Driver. I’d love to see a JHS tube pedal; also, bear in mind I have no idea if it would work or be worth it, I’d be interested in hearing something like a Klon Centuar powered by a tube.

Mr. Scott, I love your channel and you always talking about important truth of pedals! But personally don't believe the "9V running tube useless" theory. Starving the plate with 9V doesn't make it diode-fashion hard clipping. Tubes don't work like amp-up the signal and hit the clipping voltage, instead, if they don't get plate voltage, they lose gain too. So the signal peak is likely never going to reach 9V. The higher the signal goes, the lower the gain tubes could provide it, sounds familiar? Yep, "non-linear distortion" It's still tube sound, it's still why we love tubes You can go search "Valve Caster", the circuit is so simple that you're going to build it up around 10 minutes. And try stack it after your favorite drive pedal, add some reverb, run into IRs, the sound won't let you down.

Awesome stuff as always but you missed kinda the key point of all this- Before Mesa Boogie, amp companies did not make guitar amps with multi stage tube stages to overdrive the preamp section. Tube pedals were originally giving you that extra tube stage outside your amp. This Mini Matrix was originally called the Mini Boogee, the idea being if you put this in front of a Fender amp you pretty much had a Boogie Mark I ! So they got sued :) and the rest is history

I've currently got a cheap art tube studio preamp as my front end. It's a nice target for my drive pedals to hit before I send it to delay and a couple of solid state amps. I swapped the og cheap 12ax7 for an rca 12au7, maybe an at7.. been a while. It might be starved plate, but it still warms and smooths things out. Remember that tubes were in car radios running off 12v. The high plate voltage puts the tube in the most linear portion, but if the point is to colour the sound, running in the less linear range is probably more effective.
