Learn how to jibe from someone that isn't good at jibing... me. Footage is broken up into chapters so you can skip to the parts you need. With these 4 basic types of gybes you can mow the lawn and surf till the cows come home. Demonstrations are with footstraps, but you can apply all of the concepts without footstraps and it's easier! Also some flipped footage at the end for goofy footers. I didn't forget you!

This is awesome. Thank you. I'v been watching this video o couple of times and finally some amazing progress this week. Finding the balance spot helped me make several foot switches and all the other tips helped me make several smoth gybes with full planing. The underhand grip, that you use fronthand ,makes the handover easier. So many good things in this video. Thanks!

This is great. Im a windsurfer and a windsurf foiler that is struggling with winging. I appreciate the breakdown, it’s a language I understand. I will definitely try finding the balance point, never thought of it. The strap to strap feet switch is the same as windsurf foiling. I quite like that. So instead of trying to forget windsurfing I can try and utilize it. Thank you.

I can’t take all the credit. Nick O’Bea started me thinking about it by telling me to put the mast so that you can stand with both feet at the front of the board without changing the board’s angle, but I’ve come to find that it works almost anywhere on the board as long as you know where it is. Right now, I like the lift to be between the front and back foot straps but a little closer to the front.

It will happen. Part of it is getting on the right gear and getting it dialed in. Really focus on understanding where your balance point of lift is when you’re riding. The other part is just time on the water!

Surfers seem to pick up jibing faster than windsurfers, which is crazy. But I think it’s cause balance and riding the foil is the most important piece of the puzzle. I always tell people learning to jibe to just forget about the wing. Get it up high and see how far you can just ride the foil. Try doing a 360 with the wing over head and see how far you can get around. From what I’ve noticed, most people don’t ride the foil enough. Not enough front foot pressure and glide. You got this.

Nice! Let me know when you’re at Mohave. As a former windsurfer myself, I would advise trying get comfortable with the foil’s ability to pump and glide. You’ll be surprised how long it will stay on a “plane” compared to a windsurfer. Once you start unlocking the potential of the foil it changes the sport form windsurfing with a fancy fin to foiling!

Im probably 195 pounds in this video. Wind was around 15-20 mph I think. I was on 6.2 Cabrinha Mantis V1 medium powered. I usually ride a big wing though so not the best for comparison. Board is 65L AXIS Froth. Foil was PNG 910b with 90 cm aluminum mast and either 400 speed or 375 progressive tail. Can’t remember. Ultrashort or short fuse. Aluminum mast is a perfectly good choice. It’s what I ride, and I attempt all sorts of stuff on it. Flakas, backflips etc. I have also taken it to 27 mph on the ART 799. I believe it can go faster too. It’s stiffer than any carbon mast on the market Im told and stiffness is most important for winging.

I took a pvc pipe and epoxied a GoPro mount to the end. Then you stick the PVC pipe into the back of your wing strut before you inflate it. Make sure you tie the go pro off to the back handle.

Hi Wingman, really great tutorial! Do you recommend using footstraps when learning to gybe? I have trouble keeping track of where my feet are!
@wingmanfoilclub
@wingmanfoilclub Жыл бұрын
Great question. If you’re used to footstraps from windsurfing or kitesurfing it might be helpful. Having more control of the board can make a big difference and allow you to turn tighter. If you’re from surfing then it might feel foreign. Getting your feet out of the footstraps can be tricky. I learned with footstraps from basically day one and it really helped me as a former windsurfer and kiter. One option to consider is just using the front footstraps.
@robadair
@robadair 2 жыл бұрын
Good breakdown. I’d recommend against that shuffle with two feet in the middle of the board though. Learn to do a quick 2-step instead so when you get into waves you have it wired.
@wingmanfoilclub
@wingmanfoilclub 2 жыл бұрын
I think starting with the shuffle on the center of lift is a key component in learning to jibe. Once you understand where the lift is and where you can just stand and ride with both feet in one spot, then you can use that spot for the quick foot switch and know that is where you can move your foot during the quick foot switch and the board won’t move. We aren’t using that method forever. We are using it to learn.

Oh god, I'm a very early beginner in this (have been up on foil half a dozen times), and that 'Finding the balance' part with you walking around/putting your feet next to eachother on the board makes me feel sick to the stomach, haha. I'm sure as I develop my balance and feel on the foil that will change, but right now: nope.
@wingmanfoilclub
@wingmanfoilclub 3 ай бұрын
You will! It takes time, but eventually you’ll be amazed how you the foil becomes an extension of your body. Don’t forget different foils and setups will be more stable than others. Check out my video on tuning your foil to see some ways to make it more stable (example: longer fuse, bigger tail, shimming). Keep it up! I’ll be launching a new weekly video series soon going over every beginner topic. Stay tuned for another big announcement video tomorrow.

@@wingmanfoilclub Interesting about the 880. just over 1000 sq cm. People have recommended the 1050 HPS as well. It's a possibly candidate for sure. I live near high altitude lakes and wind is iffy. It's either nuking or barely enough, hence my 1120 and thinking about an 1150. Wish I could try/ buy them all. Eventually I'm sure I'll have a quiver. stuff is so expensive! @@haenagirl1 haha. I foil in the ocean too often. You just have to time the jibes a little. The swell can actually help if you use it to ride the foil. Don’t rush the jibe. Just ride the swell and foil through the turn. Use the “surfer method” if you’re on a swell, and use the “windsurfer method” if you need to turn quickly on a dime to avoid swell.
