We stayed at the incredible Tigh Na Mara Resort and tried our hand at salmon jigging with Brian Roth from BD Diesel Performance. The Herring Aid Mac Fish jig from Gibbs Delta tackle was the golden ticket for us as we got into lots of action on the water.

Can you advise on jig size and colors? Fish Lake Michigan and love to try something new. Trolling can get so boring, particularly frustrating on those days marking fish and doesn't trigger a bite. Like to add this to my arsenal and get into hand to hand combat with a nice King.

holy crap that tyee was a stunning fish. nice job on the treatment, probably made it to the spawning grounds or caught again. what kind of rod were you using? looked like a dedicated jigging rod, but not of the halibut variety.

Watched my first video of yours a few weeks back and actually took your advice and bought all the Gibbs Delta jigs. I have caught a kings jigging for herring but never directly targeting them. Do a lot of trolling with downriggers, flashers, hootchies, herring and spoons. Just watching and learning differing techniques from other pro anglers. Question just for reference. When do you determine when you troll, mootch or jig for kings? Thanks and I will keep looking for more great tips and videos.

Thanks for watching! Please subscribe if you haven't yet! Often we will set out with mooching, trolling or jigging in mind so we will find a spot or use local knowledge to go and do it. It also depends what you're seeing on the electronics. If you're seeing a large bait ball and marking a lot of salmon or getting hook ups in the same spot then switching over to jigging would be a good idea. Unless there are other boats targeting the same spot you don't want to setup for jigging right in the middle of their tac.

@@ReelWestCoast Gotcha, I thought it was a way to keep em on better. I've recently discovered jigging for springs down here in SVI, but am looking for any trick to keep em from coming off so much!

@@slacktide_angler try replacing the trebles with a good, strong si-wash hook, like from gamakatsu, vmc, or owner preferably, then instead of using the split rings the jigs come with, take them off and use 65lb plus braided line to make a “braided line split ring” salt strong has a good video on how to tie it, it’s super strong and probably even less visible than a split ring, and it prevents the fish from using the metal split rings as leverage to pop the hook out of their mouths,
@slacktide_angler
@slacktide_angler 3 жыл бұрын
@@HATINTHEKAT thanks I'll give it a try. I'm using assist hooks with Dacron right now, and it seems to be ok, but would like the hook closer to the jig
@HATINTHEKAT
@HATINTHEKAT 3 жыл бұрын
@@slacktide_angler yeah you can control the “braided split ring” gap size, you can make it bigger or smaller, I wouldn’t go smaller than say a pen or an average sized screwdriver for the tool you’ll use to determine the gap, still need some space to give it that free spinning action, but I agree with you on the Dacron assist hooks, they’re a bit long, but still very effective, there’s some Cornish fishing channel that explains how to make your own assist hooks like gamakatsu sells, in case you wanna save a massive amount of money on assist hooks lol 😂 good luck with the split rings though, I haven’t had them fail on me so far, and that’s just with some leftover 50lb suffix 832, I imagine 65 or 80lb braid would be even more dependable,

Reel West Coast ok got it!!! Good to know. Also one thing that I think I just recently understood is the term Springers those are considered all chinook up there right? Well down here in WA/OR a Springer is a chinook that comes home sooner than most they are usually big and have lots of fat content as they have a long way to travel up river so they load up on protein before they make their longer journey to the spawning grounds. They are starting to enter the rivers now. Considered to be best tasting chinook there is.
