Iron jigs, sometimes called jigging spoons, are an under used and appreciated lure for jigging Columbia River Walleye and Lake Whitefish. While popular among offshore anglers in the Pacific Northwest targeting bottomfish and tuna they are scarcely seen in tackleboxes of Northwest Walleye anglers. Additionally, they are highly effective at targeting Lake Whitefish that are feeding on juvenile perch or walleye and have been widly used by Great Lakes anglers to target large whitefish for decades.
Tackle featured in this video:
- Major Craft Jigpara Jig 15 gram: amzn.to/3D0Xfbu
- P-Line Laser Minnow: amzn.to/3QQDWXE
- P-Line Kokanator: amzn.to/3krSAbJ
Recommended Setup:
- Berkley Lightning Med Rod 7': amzn.to/3jFBEva
- RUNCL Ancohuma 3000: amzn.to/3yEeZa7
- PowerPro 8 or 10 lb braid: amzn.to/3TjN4UA
- Seaguar 8 lb Fluoro: amzn.to/3gd2Jah

I saw a guy catch a 20 inch whitefish in the Columbia by The Dalles. Shocked everyone as we usually only catch them in the cold water tributaries. Great video!

That is a different species of whitefish pretty sure. He is catching non native Lake Whitefish in the upper Columbia where in the lower Columbia and tributaries there are the native Mountain Whitefish.

Line twist city reeling against the drag like that, no? Anyway, that's what happens to me if I'm reeling and the drag isn't tight enough. Hate that. Level wind with the cast control loosened all the way seems to work better for me. Great videos man. You're doing awesome and I can't believe there's only 370 👍 on your videos. Great content.

I'm not much of a walleye fisherman but the areas I've tried on the columbia were just overwhelmed with pikeminnow, couldn't even keep a lure down. I need to try it again.

Do you think that 12lb Stren monofilament would be too heavy of line to jig with at this depths? Or would have too much drag in the water to keep it vertical? I'm planning to just use my small mouth setups to try this out, but saw you were using pretty light power pro braid. As always, thanks for the great info!

Love your videos. How do you locate a current drift like you mentioned in the video. I fish Roosevelt by hunters frequently and it's big water that looks like a lake. In a river the swifter current is easy to see. Do you use your top maps alot for this purpose or do you just drop down and see if your lure move sideways?
