This is a guide to help you choose which is be best jigging reel for you if you plan to go fast jigging or slow jigging. If you are just starting out, there are a few things you need to consider when you look for a slow or a fast jigging reel - in this video we talk about why slow jigging reels need to have a high retrieve speed and why fast jigging reels need to have a slower retrieve speed, the dynamics of the reels in relation to the line and how it moves the jig. Although this might sound a bit technical to a lot of people, the little bit of information you get in this video will help you better understand things and will help you decide which reels to choose for either fast or slow jigging.

I spooled it with 8 LB test mono for lighter lures, gave it some practice casts and found that it did cast well kzfaq.infoUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e , except that the anti-backlash setting had to be turned up almost all of the way to keep the "overcasts' ' down. I disassembled it, and found that if I potted some "shim washers" behind that anti-backlash magnet assembly, it got the magnets closer to the spool without rubbing, and I could get better control with about a 6 to 7 out out 10-Max setting. I also noticed that the handle shaft had some internal end play, maybe only 2 or 3 thousands of an inch, but it's still noticeable. If the anti-backlash and shaft tolerances were "tightened up" this would be a fantastic value. I've only used it for 4 days of fishing in a month's time, but I plan on keeping it.

So if anyone was wondering "what about other 2 types of reels". Its also very simple. Slow conventionl reels = the best for trolling because you need to tire the big fish carefully, so you do not to lose it, plus there are fish like tuna that if you battle it very fast, its heart can explode and you killed the fish. Fast spinning reels = the best for topwater fishing and generally casting sub-surface hard plastic lures or casting jigs into a feeding frenzy, since it allows to pick up slack very fast and to pick up line fast while drilling a bigger fish. Ofc, you might lose the fish, but its a low price to pay, cuz you can take the fish out fast and so the other fish does not realize it and get stressfull or scared of artificial lures. Also, for us europeans and north americans, when spinning, use slow reel in cold water/sea and fast reel in warm water/sea. Also, take care of the actual fish that you are fishing for. For example, if you are fishing a lurking fish, use slow reel regardless of season and if you fish active fish, use fast reel regardless of season. One more tip, inchiku, kabura, tenya, zoka and fake fish/squid lures are also sub-type of slow jigging and you also want to use fast conventional reel for it. I am not trying to sell you a philosophy, its just whats logical to me, and i think that Kit would also agree with everything that i said.

Now...why can't all commenters be like this? Instead I get fruitcakes from the US telling me that American braid is more superior than Japanese braid. HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAH Thanks so much Jure, good info for people to consume! problem is, a lot of people have the "one reel to do it all" mentality so it's kind of hard for them to get their heads around specific tools for specific uses - I think it's safe to say that we have nothing to sell to people and we are just sharing experiences and what we know...end of the day, it's really up to people to listen or not. :) And that Japanese braid has some dacron and some other crap mixed in to it so American Braids are better. Hi Rick, I honestly believe this is a matter of personal taste - what I can say is My Avet SX Raptor has caught some nice fish, I enjoy using it from time to time, but it's not really the reel I pick up for jigging. It works for sure and when the going gets tough, you can have the low gear to help you a bit.

Can you advice me? we do deep jigging most of the time (140 to 260m deep, 100 to 250gr jig, slow and fast) and catch giant trevally or dogtooth tuna.
@TheFishingKit
@TheFishingKit 2 жыл бұрын
Glad it helped! If you are right handed, it is better to go with a right handed reel if I was to decide. You need to be able to flat wind (winding line without pumping) especially when slow jigging because you need all the advantages you can have when fishing light erline. It is difficult to do that with a left handed reel - if you are right handed. It is a big advantage that overheads have over spinning reels because you can not reel without pumping with spinning reels. It is difficult to suggest something that you might not be able to get, so if you can, tell me your choices.

@@TheFishingKit thank you for your reply. I've forgot to say : I'm fishing with a kayak (also for deep jigging) and even if I am right handed all my spining reel crank are left, I feel stronger to hold the rod and fight the fish with my right hand, does I'm wrong? I've tested the ocea jigger reel right hand only one time but don't have a good feeling using my right hand for reel, had to test more of one time for sure. I also want to know your opinion about overhead reel with line guide for begginer. I've notice that I had trouble to reel and guide the line at the same time, also a feeling problem ? I watched many reel on web, I hesitate between daiwa saltiga and shimano ocea jigger for "no guide line" and the tica titan claw reel and the saltiga bay jigging for the reel "with line guide". we can talk by mail or messenger FB if you want, thank you again

If you can find the right rod and if you can cast the reels comfortably without backlashing, it is possible. I have been trying to look for a suitable rod for this for a long time, but have not really found one, I have done this with non popping rods with some result, but spin gear is still by far easier to handle.

Interesting so you prefer wide spool vs narrow spool? Getting my first SPJ set up which reel shud i get Seigler SGN,SG or Accurate Tern 300x, Tsunami forged 8? Any reel you recommend 350usd budget? Thanks!
@TheFishingKit
@TheFishingKit 3 жыл бұрын
Not too wide - A narrow spool will lose its arbor faster than one that has a bit of width - using the same thickness line, when you lose arbor size, you lose retrieve speed. I don't know those reels...not really sure if they are designed for Slow Jigging. But if they satisfy the basic requirements of the retrieve speed, handle length etc. any reel should, in theory work. But I know those you mentioned are super heavy...in slow jigging, the object is to still be able to play basketball after a slow jigging trip - if you can't do that, either you are not doing it right, or if you are, then your gear isn't right.
@ShinkiZer0
@ShinkiZer0 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheFishingKiti think they do, SGN only weighs 9.8oz, but accurates and shimano as very well known here in US. Tern is accu entry level spj star drag reel. By handle you mean longer handle? For $300 tops wud you suggest any reel? Thanks! I want to try SPJ before fully committing.
@TheFishingKit
@TheFishingKit 3 жыл бұрын
@@ShinkiZer0 best advice myself or anyone can give you that really wants you to succeed - Get one of the proper ones made for slow jigging - rod, reel, line and lure, assist hooks - if by some strange miracle you don't like it, then the resale value is quite high for the proper stuff - you won't lose much. I don't know if you can readily get Ocea Jigger or Saltiga slow jigging reels, or how much they cost there. But those are the ones you should be looking at.

Personally, I find the Shimano to be better. In my opinion, this accurate reel isn't really made for slow jigging, it was fitted to be used as a slow jigging reel, but not made for it. Shimano OJ HGs, and now XGs are made for jigging from the ground up. There is a difference. (The PGs were made for fast jigging).

Hello. The Saltiga LD35JH is a reel especially designed for jigging which seems to have a very narrow arbor / spool. Why would Daiwa design this jigging reel with a very narrow arbor, when a wider arbor is optimal performance for retrieve purposes - per your video? I understand the narrow arbour is best for handling (and more comfortable) for longer jigging sessions but then retrieve performance suffers and is compromised…correct? How does the arbour width of this Saltiga reel compare with the OJ 1500 reel you displayed in this video? Also, can you confirm that you have 2 x different reels for fast jigging (conventional reel for smaller fast jigs and spinning reel for longer fast jigs)? What conventional reel do you use for fast jigging - OJ2000 Correct? When would you use your Trinidad instead of your OJ reels? What model Trinidad reel is shown in this video? Cameron
@TheFishingKit
@TheFishingKit 4 ай бұрын
Companies opted for narrow reels because majority of users before had a hard time leveling the line - Shimano just released the OJ LD 2500. And states EXACTLY the reason I mentioned here about slow jigging and wider spools. The LD 35 is made for what type of jigging? The Japanese website does not have it. The oj 1500 is smaller than the LD 35. Confirm? Look behind me in some of my videos when you can see the shelve unit behind me and see exactly how many reels are on there. I have reels for different types of jigging. OJ 2000 was one of the reels I used for fast jigging - it was what I used for 300-500g jigs. I used the trini for deeper water. I have since moved away from Shimano and shifted to SOM reels. I mention what trinidad I use on this video. It's the trini 16A

I allready bought an Oceans Legacy Elementus rod, which is actually a compromise between a slow jigging rod (loadable front section) but fitted with a little bit harder rear section to fight the bigger ones. So you can do both but you are limited in the weight of your jigs for fast jigging (fast max 250gr, slow max 500gr). The point is, that I bought it as a spinning setup combined with a Shimano Twin Power 8000, because I had the Idea to use the reel also for my popping rod. Now I ask myself if I did a bad purchse?

When you buy things, like...say...a car, you buy it for a few different reasons, a daily driver would be something that could do that really good, but really not something for racing. Slow jigging is very specific, much like racing. There is no such thing as a spinning slow jigging rod or reel...and much like a car, you are asking if you can race your daily driver - the answer is...YES...but don't expect to win a grand prix with it.

Hi Max, different people do it different ways, but you don't really have to. What I do is when I work the bottom, I don't really do it, but when I decide to reel it all up, I drop down again and level on the way up. another option is tilting the reel left to right when you reel (it levels the line - try it!), yet another option is to just leave it and only use your thumb to level things when you see a bulge forming - then, drop down a level things when you move or are about to go home.

I'm new to slow pitch jigging. Here in northern Europe we usually fish with with heavy soft lures or pirks that will get to the bottom as fast and straight as possible, so that we can hit the wrecks when we see them on the sounder. Maybe a stupid question but how do you get a slow jig to the bottom fast in deep water. It's built to flutter so I assume it would flutter all the way down if you just let it drop. Do you keep the line tight to orient the jig vertically and avoid the fluttering?
@TheFishingKit
@TheFishingKit 4 ай бұрын
You put pressure on the spool so the jig stays in a vertical position when it drops; this way, it drops fast...this is also the reason why there is no such thing as a spinning combo for slow jigging - you can not put pressure on the spool to make the jig drop fast.

@TheFishingKit
@TheFishingKit Жыл бұрын
When I say wide, it is not the W models of certain reels, it is the "regular" width. Since wider spooled reels will have a lower spike in drag as well as retrieving more line when you reach the bottom, compared to narrower spooled reels. The reel you mentioned has a narrow spool. You can still use it, much like the OJ 2000. The main point is, your drag will spike up faster and it will have a lower retrieve speed than a wider spooled reel.
