I know this video is somewhat older but I just watched it and I felt very compelled to comment. I am a former law enforcement officer/detective of 10+ years for a very large county near Atlanta, GA. I would first of all like to say that what you guys are doing is EXCELLENT!!!! Cleaning up our rivers and finding valuables and returning them to their rightful owners is to be commended. I myself am a certified scuba AOW diver and I do a lot of underwater metal detecting and trash cleanup as well. I also do my best in returning lost valuables, that I am fortunate to recover, to the respectful owners. After watching this video, I have to say that I am 110% completely appalled!!!!! As if there is not enough crime being committed in a large city such as Columbus, GA, and then for an ON DUTY police officer to take the time to watch you, and then nonetheless harass you, literally infuriates me!! He definitely should have been dealing with more serious issues of criminal activity that were no doubt being committed during the time he absolutely wasted questioning you (not to mention the waste of tax payer's dollars...... ). Add in the fact that you pointed out, and had video of, the PFD you were wearing the entire time, and then the the officer continued to harass you about it, completely irritates me beyond imagination. I've also viewed another video of DALLMYD where Jake was present (once again in Columbus) and you guys had on a type of "leg PFD" and were questioned by a zealous officer. KUDOS TO YUPPY FOR HIS CHALLENGING COMMENTS TO THE OFFICER REGARDING, "ARE YOU WEARING A GUN...... ARE YOU WEARING A CAMERA...." I loved it and so do my other Law Enforcement comrades who viewed your video who stand up for, and stand behind, the COMMON SENSE side of law enforcement. Even though they weren't "Coast Guard approved PFD's", you guys still made the absolute concerted effort of SAFETY, bottom line!!!! As a Law Enforcement Officer, until the situation dictates otherwise, you have to police with a heart, dignity, common sense, well-being, and above all, ALWAYS.... AND I MEAN ALWAYS, treat others as you want to be treated!!! You guys keep doing what you are doing and stand up for yourselves as you have so respectfully done. God Bless.

Citations aren't about public safety; they're about generating city revenue. It's as simple as that. This is why it's imperative that dashcams be used when driving, and interactions with police also be recorded.

I got a littering ticket in a small town for 750 dollars because I teach my kids when we go camping, we always leave it in better shape than we found the area. That being said, my kids and I were picking up a ton of garbage and piling it up when a cop came in the woods and ticketed us for throwing it on the ground. I was so pissed. I just explained to him what we were doing and what I tech my children. He refused to listen, later I got the littering ticket for 750 dollars.

I was hassled by a Park Ranger in San Diego emptying garbage cans in the parking lot into a dumpster. I was wearing an official volunteer T-Shirt for the the property ! He accused me of stealing full garbage cans and told me to stop or face arrest.

Being a police officer in London UK, the only reason I would have called you over would be to shake your hand and say 'good job'. You stayed cool and polite and you inspire young people with your attitudes. you guys are a pleasure to watch, keep the videos coming.

Nothing ever changes, I lived in a slum once. So tired of trash. I cleaned it up,cut the weeds. The city sent a code enforcer to tell me to stay off city property. I sold and left the state never to return.

Cops never really owned up to his mistake. Had to get in all that nonsense about "If I catch you in there without a vest I'm going to give you a ticket". How about you just leave the guy alone? You were mistaken, leave it at that. And just to be clear, you are only innocent until proven guilty in a courtroom. Cops only see guilt. When you're getting a ticket, you're guilty as far as the cop is concerned. He has to come to court to prove it but he doesn't have to prove anything to you at the scene of the ticket.

We were cleaning up graffiti on hiking trails in California and were harassed by the sheriff's department. They said we needed to get permission to use a wire brush and water to remove spray paint graffiti from rocks on a hiking trail.

This is the kind of law enforcement officer that gives law enforcement officers (including the good ones) a bad name.He was not a honest cop until he finally realized he was caught on video. Your video didn't come off the wrong way, it showed honest occurence that could happen to anyone.

The fact that you are helping the wildlife and cleaning the river makes you a very good role model for young kids, the city should show their gratitude for you guys by buying you all new vests and give you all $200 towards equipment that you need. It really shows that abuse of power has no limits in humanity. The officer wasn't man enough to admit that he was wrong. I really wish you would have taken the citation and fought it in court. It needs to be on his record that he's a bully. He used his position to try to intimidate you. Great job on standing up for yourself politely and respectfully. There is something called discretion, yeah your buddy wasn't wearing a vest, the cop could easily have said, hey, you gotta wear a vest, make sure you do next time.... As for assuming you pulled one on after, well, that just says a lot about the cop really.

The cop wouldn't admit he was wrong but gave you the benefit of the doubt like he was doing YOU a favour. He was actually doing himself a favour by avoiding the public embarrassment that would follow from his mistake. I've had similar experiences as a courier. I would go into a large building that had a sign up saying "No deliveries after 4 p.m." The security guard would assert his power and tell me, also, "we don't accept deliveries after 4 p.m." I learnt to shrug my shoulders and say "it's your stuff, but o.k." and start walking out. Every time I did that they would say to wait and that they would "do me a favour" and let me deliver it. It's the same game... the security guard is doing themselves a favour because they know if the people upstairs waiting for their delivery find out security turned me away they will be in trouble because it's all on camera. "I'll do you a favour" is definitely a power game that authorities play. Sometimes, depending on what was in my self interest, I would say "No thanks" and keep walking. It felt great. Maybe in the situation with this cop you could say "I don't want the benefit of the doubt, I want the citation and my day in court." I bet he wouldn't cite you.

You pulled it out of your pocket and it inflated and got your arms through it and zipped it up without him seeing?*** I too respect law enforcement but I have encountered many a cop in my life who act ungrateful for citizens that AERNT causing trouble or breaking the law.
