@@KyleRepinski it is done all the time in machining for maintaining exact distances and cutting angles especially on 100+ parts that all need to be the same. That is what a part stop is, and as others have said, this is good for outside where you might not have power and need to make a cut like that and keep it nice and even, that can be difficult to do, and to keep it at a perfect 45° cut all the way. As said above, this is a good beginner one for hand saws, say like with that Japanese pull cut saw he is using and is especially useful to help make sure you get nice straight cuts and have nice 90° edges when you are done. Just some thoughts. Sincerely, JS

It's true that power tools are not always an option, but the best way to make this cut is to mark 2 lines with your speed square and cut it freehand. With a little practice, it's faster than grabbing a jig and bonus, you're not limited to 45 and 90. Get good at it and you can even cut perfect compound angles.
@coletoncallender7127
@coletoncallender7127 6 ай бұрын
@@tedspenscan you elaborate on the 2 lines method?
@tedspens
@tedspens 6 ай бұрын
@@coletoncallender7127 Sure, it's a common cut and pretty simple. For example, the 45 degree cut -- mark your 45 on the face of the board and your 90 on the edge. Start your cut on the corner where the lines meet, pulling the saw to get started (it's easier). Important: Do not cut the line! Cut next to the line. Trade term is keep the line or save the line. Anyway, start your cut on the corner and work your way into the longer line. As you're cutting, gradually follow the shorter line. You don't have to see (or mark) the other 2 sides of the board because a sharp saw with gentle cutting pressure will cut a straight slice. Do the same for a simple 90 degree cut or a tricky compound miter, it's just a matter marking 2 lines and cutting along them. 2x4's are cheap, so have some fun practicing. You'll have it down in no time.

Some good points and bad points about this design. I think the magnets are not really necessary- the bearing surfaces eventually wear, which is easily remedied by skiffing off a mm ( but not if a magnet is in the way). I prefer to have a longer jig so that it can be clamped and you don't have to worry about movement, especially when cutting hw. For those saying that if you have a chop saw you wouldn't need a jig like this, you are wrong. If you wanted to make a small 45° cut on a 2m dining table, how would you offer that up to a chop saw?

Best and easiest trick ever to cut without any jigs: just watch the mirror image of the wood that reflects in your sawblade. If the edge continues "straight through" your blade you'll cut perfectly square. Every time. If you wan't a 45° miter watch for the mirror image to create a right angle (as can be seen perfectly at the end of the video). Voilà.

I only watched it twenty times trying to see what exactly the magnets were going to do. Guess we will never know. But they sure were centered into the ends of the wood nicely.

Once I realized that was just the line your drew, and not a split, this is genius. Those are the best hand saws if you can just line them up.

Good idea for beginners. But I Don't have a table saw, miter saw, or band saw. Hardly ever build with dimensional lumber.

Using a giant miter saw and full sized drill press to make a hand saw guide is like using an arc welder to make a soldering gun. Works great looks like but if you have the tiols to make it this way ya dont really need it. Niw make it with that ryobi and ill be propeely impressed

I just builded a Tablet thats wide enough to cross the Bathtube on the wall side a I mounted a stainless steel strip and used the same Neodym magnets to lock the Tablet onto the bathtube.

I have a love-hate relationship with magnets. They're very useful at times. Other times such as when using magnets to store tools, the tools become magnetized themselves which leads to picking up all sorts of ferrous debris and sticking to things you don't want to get stuck to. The tools are basically ruined at that point.

Why use the magnets? Just hold the saw steady, I mean, there is a huge block of wood to use. Or, use the miter saw.

Why would you need the magnets. I’ve been doing that for 65 years and magnets never entered my mind don’t see how that makes it any better. Unless you’re having DT’s !

And it is still is based on a fine electric mitre saw that will do the job just fine. Never do things the easy way when the hard way will do.

This saw actually has an integrated feature for this. Look at the reflection of the workpiece on the sawblade, if it lines up, your cut will be straight. Of course this does not really work for angled cuts, so I still like the idea

Clearly for the amateur. Using a Japanese pull saw just takes some practice to keep a perpendicular edge.

So, this guy made a video showing you don’t need an expensive miter saw to cut wood,……..using an expensive miter saw? Or, are we to assume that he just makes these little jigs to pass out to his lesser equipped friends? I especially appreciate those fellas here complaining that the MAGNETS were the unnecessary part.

The kerf on those is typically way too wide for the thin plate of a Japanese pull-saw which is what they are using here. And the jig is more versatile in that it is not really limited on the width of the board.
