In this video i stumbled across a old School "Jim Bronson Style" Iron head Sportster at a yard sale covered with Yard tools, I have a different Vison for it and the original parts to bring it back to its old Glory days! Riding down that long lonesome highway!

Jeez! I love these old Sportsters. My favorites are late 60s magneto ignition Sportsters. You do nice work. your stuff looks great. I'm interested in becoming a better DIY painter. Could you do a vid on the step by step basics that you do? I really like your channel. Thanks for doing these vids.

I was thinking of doing a painting and prepping video actually. Give me a little time and hopefully I can produce something that is helpful to the garage painter who wants professional results. Good comment my friend!

I’m so excited that I found your channel. I dream of restoring/rebuilding a shovelhead one day. Looking forward to more content, all the best!

Thank you so much Laura, I really appreciate you watching. I just checked out your channel as well and will catch up on your videos. I can especially relate to your road trips. I left in early April on my packed motorcycle from Chicago to the Florida keys. It was very cold when I left and after 547 miles in 11 hours of non stop riding except for fuel I was frozen when I reached North Carolina. I give you tremendous credit for doing what you’re doing. I look forward to following along on your journey and can definitely relate to all the challenges while touring on a motorcycle in which you are currently going through including stretching the money and sleeping outdoors, basically I slept at rest stops next to my motorcycle Between hotel stops. Take care, happy to subscribe!

Thank you Tony, I really appreciate you subscribing and I enjoyed reading your comments. I have learned to lay down glass smooth paint Jobs using the techniques I have learned over time saving materials and lots of time! No fish scale, just glassy flat smooth finish’s right out of the spray gun. One day I may make a video on the technique and subject. Thanks again Tony, take care my friend.

Good luck with this one. I've got a 72 XLCH (stock) that I bought to save it from going to England. It's living happily in my basement while I concentrate on my big twins

I’m so glad you saved that 1972 XLCH from leaving our shores! I see many going overseas lately. I too had my share of big twins including my 1971 FX Super glide boat tail, it was the sparkling America optional paint. I hope to track down a nice pan and knuckle in the future as well but they are crazy expensive! I just sold my 93 Dyna Low Rider, still kicking myself! Again, thanks so much for saving that 72 XLCH, they keep going up in price in stock condition. Thanks for watching I really appreciate it!

@@Michael-st1hl About your comment that the Pans and Knuckles are crazy expensive.....These older Sportsters are the last of the affordable classic Harleys, snap 'em up while you still can!

What a wonderful video. You were mighty lucky to find a 1970 XLH at a cheap price. You do wonderful work. Rebuilding it to stock condition is the right chose. I also watched Bronson in late 69 to early 1970. Back then a 900 Sportster was a big bike to me. That bike should look better than new in some ways after you are done. You know your Ironhead Sportsters. 1967 to 1970 XLH's are pretty much the same, but there are some differences in them. Mainly rims, rear tire size, lower fork tubes, front fender, reflectors starting in 1969. Front amber reflectors readily available, rear red reflectors are $200 to $400 for used ones on Ebay. Good luck with a wonderful project.

Thank you so much! I always appreciate very much your comments and your knowledge pertaining to these old classics. My purpose was to restore this 1970 XLH to stock condition. I think every one of these should be saved, restored and put back on the road. Not many survived the past and current chopping craze. I have seen really beautiful old stock Sportsters I tried to save, but the owners insisted on parting them out for profit which broke my heart! I even offed more then the bikes worth in the state it was in so I could rescue the bike from permanent loss to the motorcycle world… but people simply can be greedy and uncaring and have no interest in the historical significance of these iconic Harleys. I had no intention of putting this bike on KZfaq when I bought it, so I only filmed certain things for my own reference. But just now thought I would share what little film documenting I have left of this bike. Not to mention all the vintage British sports cars I restored like my Austin Healeys BJ8s BN4s TR-6s Tr4s MGA coupe and so on and on… I never thought of filming back then, just still shots! I may share some of them as well. Not sure if people would be interested since it’s a motorcycle channel. Take care Joe and thanks!

Thanks, I really appreciate it! It’s always great to get feedback and comments like yours. As you can see in the still shots the bike was left out in the elements wasting away. The guy was actually selling a old tire on marketplace and I happen to spot the old hamburger brake drum sticking out from underneath a old tarp in the background with rakes, shovels and yard tools up against it. I knew it was an old Sportster under that tarp… went over there and snagged it with the full intention of restoring it back to factory stock and getting it back on the road. I really appreciate your comment! Take care!

@@Michael-st1hl Wow!! very lucky!! I have always been partial to CH's but lately have been wanting a XLH. Found a '73 XLH sitting since the 80/90s. Little bit of work and she is a runner. Nice having the e-start as im used to mag CH........ 😳

That bike was actually in pretty good shape, compared to what is here in Florida. The bikes I run into are crap. Nice find and good job.

Thank you Big Ed, actually the guy was selling a used old motorcycle tire on Marketplace. But in the background I spotted a hamburger brake drum peeking out of an old tarp in his backyard with rakes, shovels and all kinds of old yard tools leaning against this tarp. I texted the guy and said if whatever motorcycle was under the tarp I may be interested! I knew it was an old Sportster from what little I could see and I even pegged the year! Long story short I saved it from oblivion and more decay. It pays to have a sharp eye sometimes! I drove over there and snagged it!

@@Michael-st1hl the one i got, I paid 1300.00 for it. Thats the one that i'm doing the bolt on hardtail. Its gonna be a low budget Rat bike.. The people over hear in my area want 1000.00 for rusty , crusty, non running , no title bikes, it's crazy. But, i think you found a decent one.

I got a title for it and the guy actually had it running! I told him to shut it down before he hurt it. Good thing I did, the gas tank and filter was loaded with rust! And the old oil line was loose. I can see the base gaskets were new as he told me the top end was partially rebuilt. I have to tell you big Ed, I have been very blessed all my life with good engines with the exception of a few. This one I will have to get out on the road to test it out this summer to fully evaluate it. The only reason I bought this bike is because it was actually running, basically I just bought a frame and motor here!

Electric start 900’s (usable ones anyway) are not that common. I have a 1967, which is obviously first year electric start XL, and I think they only made a couple thousand. You’re lucky to find one that would go back to stock. Nice build!

Thank you John, the guy was actually selling an old motorcycle tire on marketplace and I seen an old pancake brake drum sticking out from an old tarp in the background with a bunch of rakes, shovels and yard tools laying against it. I knew it was an old Sportster under there! Called the guy and told him I was interested in what was under the tarp! Went over there the same day and saved it from further destruction. It was a sad sight but it is my nature to restore things and bring them back to life again for future generations to enjoy. The videos I took were for my own reference because I didn’t intend to put this on KZfaq. But I will continue to share what I have. I appreciate your comment. I enjoy reading them!
