Seriously, this Krayeske guy, made the drive, brought his equipment, probably rehearsed the question he was going to ask and never once thought to find out for sure whether or not a college coach's salary actually comes from state funding? What a tool.

0:44 I love Calhoun's face when he looks at the basketball reporter's faces that this guy chastises them. In some ways, what he did to them was worse than what he did to Calhoun. As soon as those reporters responded with a "get out of this room you jerk" type vibe, that gave Calhoun all the more power to really give it to this "activist reporter." (BTW - a journalist or reporter should never be an "activist" - it's a violation of journalistic integrity).

Tell you what. If I had a coach that helped bring in that amount of money to my university then He is the Man. The reporter who interviewed him has a record of past problems and is tries to cause confrontations that stick out in the media. I believe he was involved with the connecticut governors rally and was arrested for trespassing. To me, he is nothing but in the way. Way to go Coach!

Calhoun is 100 percent correct. He makes the School a tremendous amount of money for the school , he is probably underpaid. In college there are so many choices for recruits, thats why the coach is much more important in college than pros. HE is the reason why the big talent goes there in the first place

While some of the money that sports programs bring in are reinvested into the program (facilities, coaching staff salaries, equipment, advertising), the majority of it goes toward academic facilities. It allows them to build new lecture halls, research equipment, books, etc. Successful college sports programs are great for academics.

I love how some people feel entitled enough to question another persons salary after they have no idea how much work a person has gone through in order to obtain that salary. What’s wrong with getting paid good? Especially if you’ve done a good enough job in order to be paid well? Idk I don’t get it. Just ridiculous that no matter what, rich people will always be criticized and demonized for being successful.

Ken, I have some facts for you. Coach Calhoun just cycled 50 miles, 16 of them with 5 broken ribs for charity. There are your facts, punk. Coach Calhoun gives away more time and money than almost any high profile coach/athlete. I'd love to see Krayeske go from the kitchen to the bathroom with a stubbed toe, much less 16 miles with 5 broken ribs. That is dedication and commitment. Bravo, coach - that is leading by example. If ever I were in a foxhole, I'd love to have Calhoun have my back.

From NYT: Andy Thibault, over at the Web site The Cool Justice Report, says that according to forms sent by the University of Connecticut to the Department of Education, last season the mens basketball team generated $7.3 million in revenue, not the $12 million Mr. Calhoun claimed. And get this: it spent $6.1 million. Which means that the teams actual profit last year was $1.2 million. Thats less than Mr. Calhouns salary!

@ragekz15 жыл бұрын
Did you not hear Calhoun? His basketball program brings in over $12 million to the University each year. In part because they have coach Calhoun. In case you didn't know, coaches have huge influence on recruiting, they don't just run practices and call plays. Professional athletes only make as much as the fans are willing to pay. This isn't money that comes from the government, it's from the FANS. If owners didn't make enough on their teams, they wouldn't be paying them so much.

The question shouldn't be centered around Calhoun's acceptance of his salary deal (reported to be $1.6 million in salary plus and ADDITIONAL $5.5 million from the "$12 million generated"). Any of us would have accepted the same deal if it were offered to us. The question should be centered around which state government officials had their heads so far up THEIR self-entitled asses that they gave him this deal in the first place.
@ym6115 жыл бұрын
Programs are built by coaches. If a player is good enough he can turn pro where the cash is. The players are walking away with an education if they stick it out. The bulk of the money goes to the school and pays for a lot of things including other sports and programs. There is no "shaft" for players. They have an opportunity to earn themselves greater opportunities. Calhoun deserves every penny he EARNS.

Krayeske's totally unreasonable explanation of the premise: "Gov. (M. Jodi) Rell has asked that we share the pain and sacrifice of this difficult budget time, and I think a coach who enjoys the celebrity exception to the state employee ethics rule can share the pain and sacrifice and forgo a small percentage of his statewide salary. If state employees at the Department of Social Services are taking furloughs, Coach Calhoun can chip in and show he is a leader not just on the court."

Coaches are way over paid. The players on the court are the ones doing the work. So what if "'we' turn over 12 million dollars to the University"? This guy doesn't break a sweat. It's the college players who are underpaid. A college basketball team is a freakin' monopoly. Not hard to make money that way.

While it isn't technically Calhoun's basketball program, it is Calhoun who made the program what it is today. Before he became coach, UCONN was a small-time program. They had never made it past the Sweet Sixteen, much less win a title. But Calhoun has led them to 10 Big East titles, 7 Elite appearances, and 2 titles. He deserves his pay.

@Stereophonics8113 жыл бұрын
With Wiggins, he continued to recruit him (by talking to his barber, of all people) while he was supposedly verbally committed to St. John's. He also did some illegal things while recruiting Ben Gordon and Caron Butler, not to mention the infamous AAU incident with Rudy Gay. I have plenty other examples. Just ask.
@ChrisWilder15 жыл бұрын
I like the way Calhoun handled that guy. He defended his salary and I think he deserves it. I also think that Jim Calhoun could have taken that opportunity to call for his players to be compensated as well. If the basketball program is generating that much money for the university, how can he take his seven-figure salary with a clear conscience, knowing that a lot of those kids are struggling?
@egrasso1015 жыл бұрын
Very few people tell it like it is because they don't know or care. He is emotional, passionate, nutty, but also correct. That is why he is one the top coaches. I know why lots of people want to play for him and I know why this guy hates him

He could NOT have handled that idiot any better. That was brilliant...succinct, intelligent, and forceful. We have a type of person these days (that reporter) that HATES to see someone get ahead and EARN the good life. We have a President who shares that thinking.
