To me, Goldberg is the definition of "an act" in wrestling. He's been over a lot longer than a short period of time - he's still over today because of his early booking & ability to work in that role. I mean he's still getting booked in PPV matches today & its because (for at least some fan's) he's still getting pops & putting butts on seats. His wrestling ability is still poor but he's still a draw for WWE because of how he was originally booked. His full entrance with the security / police escort to the ring is still fire.

Bret Hart’s criteria for a great wrestler is the same as mine. You have to be good in the ring, a good storyteller, good on the mic (but you don’t have to be The Rock) and you have to do it all while not injuring the guy you’re working with. On that basis, Bret is a 10 and Goldberg is a 0. Picking a guy up and slamming them or spearing them isn’t wrestling. It’s brawling. Steve Austin did that, but he didn’t injure people for real either. Goldberg was just a more successful Ahmed Johnson. Both about equal in the ring and on the mic. Say what you want about that, but WWE is still in business and they fired the popular guy who was hurting people. WCW kept pushing Goldberg until he ended the career of the best technical wrestler and storyteller ever.
@GLPitt1
@GLPitt1 2 жыл бұрын
Brett thinks it's real. That has always been his problem. You need opponents and different opponents to keep things interesting. If a guy is not an experienced worker, just don't do dangerous spots with him and put your damn hand up when he kicks you in the face. No reason to get a concussion to make it look "realistic". Especially in the 90s when everyone already knew it was not a real sport.

@@imdikonps4396 Yeah. I get that Goldberg was stiff and definitely could have gone easier on that kick. But that is only half the equation. Brett comes off the ropes like a bat out of hell & doesn't bring his arm up to cover his head. It's your responsibility to protect yourself and of course the other guy should try to take care of you too but why chance it. Some guys intentionally lay the kicks & punches in real stiff, some unintenionally or they make a mistake. Can't put it 100% on Goldberg.

This is how I define Goldberg. He was build as a old western freight train inside WCW. He would show up and in 2 minutes he was off to the next destination. Much like a train he's unable to change where his tracks are going and can only move at one speed once he builds up speed. He bowls through anyone that gets in his way, and is more of a display of raw power, rather than adaptability. He was the Gordon of the trainyard (points to anyone that gets that reference). Anyone that ignores how powerful he was would get injured or worse. Whereas... someone like.... Samoa Joe for example, since he has a similar undefeated streak in TNA, Joe was built like a Jeep Wrangler. Not the prettiest of vehicles, but is able to adapt to any weather or road condition and make the best of it. Capable of bringing multiple passengers to their destination without too much trouble, and can be used at a multitude of speeds. Goldberg had his time, he served a purpose, he was bigger than the rest of the yard, but because of changing track conditions, he was unable to sustain his usefulness once newer smaller... faster... models came out, but every now and then his conductor takes him out for a run and people end up getting hurt. Onlookers marvel at his presence, but his usefulness is long gone.

Goldberg was never a "technical" wrestler. He was brought in to work his gimmick which was to be the badass to wipe the floor with his opponents/victims. He basically had only 2 core moves or super moves. But that was ok because at the time of his WCW run it worked. He had the right look and his character got over because he had a huge push behind him similar to Hogan's Mid-80's run.

That and I was content with watching WWF every week. Yet this squash match caught my attention. Maybe it resonated with me as it reminded me a lot of the Ultimate Warrior and how he was built up in his first few matches. Goldberg looked like a killer. The internet wasn't what it was today so I didn't get to follow the hype and things went as they did but for those rare times I watched WCW somewhere for the next year or so, Goldberg was who I remember and who I wanted to see. Got me hooked with that ont match.

Hogan & Nash killed Goldberg Streak but the follow up was crap. Kevin Nash stated that he would spent all those days dodging Goldberg as the person who screwed him over making suspenseful to finally have match with and lose to Goldberg. However I feel more likely reason was so Kevin claim undefeated streak like Goldberg and get himself over more. Hogan wanted to end streak so not to be outdone maneuvering himself champion stopping Kevin push in the process. I agree they eventually had to kill the streak at some point but it was backstage politics stopped dead in tracks from ever begin properly followed up in the first place.

Botch-berg was more dangerous than Nia Jax. Almost half the time he injures someone during one of his matches. Luckily for most, the person that is injured half the time was himself. He could do a 5 minute squash match easy enough, but anything more his deficiencies became abundantly clear.
