The worst thing that ever happened to me ... the owner of the bookstore I managed, chewed tobacco after the store closed. He used a soda pop can to spit in, but always threw it away at the end of the day. One morning I opened the shop, pulled out my can of diet Pepsi and opened it, I set it on the desk, and a customer came in. A few minutes later, I picked up a can of diet Pepsi and took a huge sip....... it was the one he'd spit in and forgotten to throw away...... I was never so sick in my life.....and spent the next hour throwing up in the bathroom, praying no customers would come in. After that, I ALWAYS checked my soda can before drinking!

If you have important deadlines that can't be missed it's not a good idea to rely solely on the hotel wake up call. Also from some of his other stories he has stayed in some really shady motels that might not even have phones or wake up calls.

I know exactly what he's talking about. I have to take my daughter and her service dog to a research hospital. We keep a bag of clothes, toiletries and one for her dog. When we leave we're already packed. With C19 happening we can't go but we get the chance to re-evaluate and streamline. Few people truly realise how much of a time saver this is!

A 32 Gatorade bottle is the best pee catcher I found. Wide top, holds a lot and you can put a lid on it and not worry about it spilling. Always had an extra one in my truck when I did lots of driving.

I'd love to do that myself but I can't because I always wash my hands after touching my little guy. Of course not everybody does, but I feel better when I pretend they do. That's why I won't touch anybody's phone or I always use a paper towel to open a public bathroom door when I'm exiting it, because people are gross...

This is a good idea. I went on vacation in Vancouver and sadly didn't bring any nail clippers with me so I had to buy a pair at a pharmacy but they were $6.00 Canadian. So in other words bring some with you when you travel.

In our car we keep a roll of toilet paper, when I got rid of my car I put my "kit" in my wife's trunk - Roadside Kit, my jack, an old blanket, one of those tiny survival tins, a couple of fall/winter jackets. Yes to plenty of Imodium. To Corny - Kudos on the extension cord, not many would know to do that.

Stayed at the strangest little hotel/motel in Northern Georgia several years ago... Only thing in the room was the bed, phone was on a shelf next to a non working TV, no closet area, toilet & tub, no shower head or sink.... The mirror was nice though lol.. Can't remember the name.

Firstly, the dolphin is not a fish. Secondly, to whatever extent of thoroughness, Jim's toiletry bag preparedness makes sense in so many walks of life. Wrestlers, freight drivers, rock bands on tour, even people who play amateur football at the weekend - will (or should) have learned through trial and error to give themselves an easy leg-up on finite time constraints by toting that little treasure chest of not only day-to-day needs but *possible* day-to-day needs. It's the same rationale as having a first aid box at work. Or carrying a lead-loaded tennis racquet when you disembark in cannibal territory.

I know exactly what Corby is saying. I have my caddy sitting in a safe place. If I need to leave in a hurry every thing is there, put my clothes in a duffel bag, grab the caddy and I am gone.

I get the hospital urine bottles from a medical supply store. They hold a lot and can be closed up to reduce the chance of spillage.

The 'Ol Checkin The Tire Move works too. Get out and kneel down next to the tire to piss. That way if cops stop to check on you, you can say "Just checkin' the tire." PS make sure you're on the high ground & aiming the right direction if not on level ground.

Jim is like me a professional traveler we all have a system. I carry my on clock too but i never need an alarm. I've peed in a cup and one time i was on I 10 in Tucson and I was very sick with the intestinal flu stuck in traffic. I pulled on shoulder got out went under my trailer and did number 2. I know it's gross but i wasn't going to mess myself..

I travel to Texas a lot and this is actually a really good tip, particularly in the summer. Get that room as cold as you can overnight, and it’ll help the a/c keep up during the heat of the day.

I don’t do the things Jim does with hotel rooms, but my girlfriend used to laugh at me because l always take a hand held shower head and a wrench to remove and replace the one in the room. Reason being l always end up with a hotel shower head that will spew water everywhere but where it is supposed to be going. Plus the pillows are always so soft l end up with a hurting neck and like the pulse in the shower head.

Sounds like life in the military. LOL, they call it living out of a sea bag... but all military guys know and travel with a hygiene kit, which is similar to Jim’s go bag. It has every thing you need in it!

Corny, with Amazon available, I buy a case of travelling urinals. Cheap and more effective than milk cartons, bottles, etc. Just stop on the side of the road and whip it out. Since urinals are ergonomic, there's not much fumbling required. Don't forget baby wipes to clean up when done.

As someone who travels a lot, Jim has some really good advice. You really can't assume there's going to be a 24 hour drug store/gas station/etc. at every podunk little town when you stop. Not only does packing a toiletry bag save money (convenience stores tend to jack up the prices in rural areas), it also assures you that you'll have the exact brand you'll want no matter where you go, and it saves time since you won't have to go trolling around to find and buy things you could easily have brought with you. The same thing applies to food and snacks. Personally, I always load up on a certain brand of potato chips that are only sold in PA. I was born and raised there so it's nice to have them when I'm in Georgia or Washington. It also cuts down on intestinal distress when you eat food that you'd normally eat at home on the road, instead of stopping and eating local food all the time. Nothing will give you the shits quicker than food you're not used to, and you do not want the shits on a road trip.
