I grew up watching George Scott's booking first hand. Sure, he fielded ideas from guys like Mulligan and Ole, but he was a very hands-on "showrunner" with an incredible eye for detail. You could literally tell the week Ole took the book in 1981 (the TV formatting changed, guys who weren't wrestling on a show *didn't* change into street clothes to do promos, etc). He controlled the aura of the presentation. I knew Scott wouldn't like the Midnights & Corny when he took over in '89. His philosophy was that managers were semi-passive mouthpieces (who often *sat in a chair* at ringside) or babysitters (sometimes as a shoot) for talent, not the featured component of the act. He also broke up The Freebirds in Georgia (which wasn't the worst thing since Hayes got over huge as a babyface and Gordy & Snuka were probably the best heel team in the biz at that time). It was just a philosophical difference, and yeah, he was also ravaged by then-undiagnosed Alzheimer's (and whatever personality flaws he may or may not have brought to the table already). But make no mistake, '70s/early '80s George Scott was on fucking point. Post mid-'80s? Not so much.

It looked great but it should have been a US title. Because eagle. As far as the arcs on the outside, those were great and were good on a world title, but should have been laurel wreaths (for excellence and victory) like the UN logo uses olive branches (for peace)

Met Randy a couple times at Big Daddy’s Powerhouse Gym in Garden City Michigan in 92 & 93. Talked quite a bit. Hell of a nice guy and I was just a big dumb star struck kid. His voice! That wasn’t a TV gimmick…

Savage was THE GUY who put the new age total package type wrestler on the map. He had an EPIC BLEND of mic skills, main event IT factor/charisma, technical skills, aerial ability, and is great as either a face or heel! After Mach we got HBK, Eddie, Angle, Jericho, Danielson, Punk, etc. They all put their unique stamp on that type of wrestler. But Savage was the one who put that package together in an epic manner first! And rose to the top in the biggest wrestling company of all time!

I always remember Randy Savage and Jake Roberts came in kinda around the same time, within the same year to WWF. Even though they were smaller matches their 2 matches at Wrestlemania 2 (Savage and George Steele became something we'd see more in the next year) were very interesting to me as a kid cause they felt like two of the newest WWF starts that were most interesting. I was just really starting to love wrestling then and them two along with the British Bulldogs and the Hart Foundation all began their Wrestlemania moments in Wrestlemania 2. Sadly the Bulldogs best Wrestlemania moment was at that event. I can still remember the first time I saw Jake Roberts do the DDT and the first time I saw the Bulldogs and I'd always say those guys were the main reason I got into wrestling. Savage and Brett Hart too... Used to love the piledriver Hart used as his finisher back then.

I read somewhere that Jake Roberts gave Hulk Hogan the DDT during the Snake Pit at a TV taping to set up a Hogan and Roberts feud. But the fans in the audience went over for the Snake, causing Vince to scrap the plan and turn Jake face.

i’ve been watching episodes of WWF Wrestling Challenge from 86/87 between WM 2 and 3 and I have heard Vince say “Sports Entertainment” several times. He even said it during his big introduction of WM 1 in 1985. I wonder when Vince first coined the term sports entertainment?

When Tony Atlas and the Iron Sheik came into World Class when Scott took over from Ken Mantell, both men had been fired from the WWF. The one exception was Ricky Steamboat, who was loaned to Scott and Fritz as a one time favor to them so he could buy the World Class tv time slots, which never materialized. Steamboat wrestled the Magnificent Zulu at the October 86 Cotton Bowl. The funny thing was it was done under the agreement that they couldn’t show it on television.

I just saw the Florida Championship Wrestling story (part of it) and Hogan had made his bones and had friends, plus he changed the landscape. PERIOD. He was meant to be the guy and champ at that time. You can hate him then or even now. Brian is right, Hogan was smart and saw the big picture. Yep, Pat was liked universally and wrestlers respected him.

I think anything that Hogan gets credit for, should be re-examined. He has done way more damage to the business than good. Remember, all the Hogan love in the 80’s was simply the first time that regional love of specific wrestlers transferred to national love. When I say “national love” it was Northeast and some west coast as most of the south and much of the east coast was still with WCW. To top it off, Hogan wasn’t on top that long. He was good for 3.5 years, then in-out with Warrior and Savage hauling the load, at times. His rebound in the 90’s WCW was money losing. Hogan was a factor in the death of WCW, and a much bigger factor in the death of TNA, even if the company isn’t technically dead.

EXACTLY!!! Once Vince started his national rollout, it CHANGED the game in terms of potential star power. Because he created a machine to could get certain superstars to POP CULTURE ICON type of status. It's a very rare group. Hogan, Andre, Savage, and Piper were in that group. Savage had that type of IT factor to transcend wrestling. BUT when u look STRICTLY at Savage's in ring ability, he was one of the best wrestlers on the planet. And FOR DAMN SURE on of the most complete in ring wrestlers on the planet. From there he LEGIT had awesome mic skills. And of course could be great as a face or heel! And Savage wasn't the biggest guy. BUT for guys his in his size range (235-240), h had as good of a look as anybody! I'm talking physique and entrance/ring gear wise. So he was the PERFECT SUPERSTAR! WAYYYY ahead of his time! Frankly my favorite wrestler of all time along with Flair!

Hogan was the PERFECT GUY for the vision wanted to create! If Vince wanted an Attitude Era type of vision, Savage ACTUALLY would have been a superior pick to Hogan. If it was an NWA 80's vision Vince wanted to portray, Savage would have been a better pick than Hogan. BOTH had transcendant level charisma. And would have been world champs and main eventers in any era. BUT Vince wanted a wholesome All American image. With a World Champ who was a jacked large heavyweight type. And one who could connect through the audience with great mic skills and transcendant level charisma. Hogan was LITERALLY the perfect pick! Makes absolute NO SENSE to have anybody else as the Golden Goose!

What? Big John Studd and Hogan feuded in 1984. They had several matches. Studd won the first by count out and won a battle royal by last eliminating Hogan and Andre. Hogan won all of the other matches between them. They even settled things in a cage match. That's a feud. It's not a one off.

To be fair there's no way Ravage would've been made champ at that time. If Vince wouldn't jeopardize Hulkamania for Jake, he wouldn't have done it for Savage either. Scott may have wanted to, but it still wouldn't have happened unless Vince ok'd it, and at the time he never would have. This is all still back in the day when championship reigns lasted years. That said, Savage would've been (and was as a face) a great champion, but he'd have probably lost it back to Hogan before too long anyway since NY was a babyface territory.

And the funniest thing is Vince Mcmahon know how to do Pro Wrestling, he just chose not to do it at most times (Stone Cold Steve Austin Austin and The Rock feud).. George Scott who I'm not too fond of did wanna do Wrestling and keep the cartoon stuff away from the product.. I give him that much credit.. I’m one of the biggest Randy Savage fans out there. But to me, Savage was not necessarily the strongest world champion at any point in his career in my opinion. He was great without a world title the way The Undertaker was. All of the top guys aren’t all necessarily bonafide world champions - there’s many other examples to prove it.

@@brucegough Savage didn’t have a main event or mainstream type promo strong enough to carry the company (eg., Hogan, Flair, Piper, Michaels, Austin). Savage was good at promos, but he wasn’t great like the aforementioned names. His promos lacked depth and psychology. But they were packed with charisma and intensity. I’ve always thought that if Savage had promo skills like Hogan, Michaels or Piper, he would have been an even bigger star than he already was, IMO!

@@Jerrell_Johnson Savage's promo style MATCHED the character he was trying to portray overall. Savage had AWESOME mic skills. More than enough to carry a company for damn sure. It's just that Hogan, Flair, Piper, and Austin were better on the mic. Savage's mic skills were better than HBK though. Mainstream wise, MORE PEOPLE would rather hear a Savage promo than an HBK promo. Savage was EASILY an icon would could carry a company. It's that he was around the same time as a peak Hulk Hogan. AND NOBODY was better equipped to carry the WWF at that time than Hogan! And charisma/IT factor trumps great mic skills every day of the week. Just because you have great mic skills DOESN'T mean you are equipped to be a main eventer or world champ in a major company.

Me too. But Back then titles didn't switch hands often. Bruno was only a 2 time champion too, Backlund only once until he briefly won it a second time in 94. I mean in the whole 80s, only Backlund, Sheik as transitional Champ, Hogan and Savage were the World Champions.

Scott wanted to book Savage as champ instead of Hogan? When was that, in 84, when Hulk was first given the title? Savage was still in ICW when Hogan was made champion. And I really doubt Vince sent any of "his guys" to WCCW to help George out, Atlas and Sheik went to World Class because they weren't employed by the WWF and were free agents.
