My great aunt used to have the boys stay at her house while in Detroit. They loved her like a mother. My dad has cool memories of meeting those legends as a kid. She knew the lower guys needed a place to stay as they got paid diddly. So she let them stay with her for a place to stay on the road with a hot meal. They loved her for that.. Called her mother.

I've seen Olive Oyl there a few times and she always sat on the right side (Section A), in the center of the front row. At a WCW house show at the Township Auditorium on March 2, 1996, the American Males brought out a birthday cake for her before the matches started. When the American Males fought The Blue Bloods later that night, I remember one of the faces held Squire David Taylor and she slapped him. Having been somewhat of a wresting aficionado at the time, I was stumped because I had no idea who she was until Columbia's, The State newspaper ran an article that featured her. I can't find the article but the things that stood out when I read it were, she had been attending NWA/WCW (only) events there and at other venues for about 25 years and her favorite wrestler was Ricky Steamboat. Since she was diehard NWA/WCW, it shocked me when the original ECW held an event there and she showed up with an EC F'n W shirt on.

I LOVE the little old lady stories! Growing up in Dayton Ohio in the 80s we still had one. She didn't really look that old - just middle aged. But she was probably in her 60s. But she was ALWAYS at Hara Arena - from the first match I ever saw there in 1988 till she died some time in the early 90s. I remember seeing in the front row when I was in the upper deck. Then when I was able to get front and second row tickets got to speak with her. She even gave me a bunch of old photos she'd taken over the years of all the matches for years before. I presume she had been going there forever. I cannot even remember her name - I wish I could. She didn't have a nickname that I knew, but she was always screaming at the heels and would jaw jack with them. She was so nice to me and I sad when she died. So these stories always bring her to my memory.

People need an emotional release every once in a while. Professional wrestling, before everyone had cell phone cameras, was one way people could vent. If you really wanted to scream at your boss during the day, then you could go after work to the match and scream at the heels. But these days, any time you’re out in public, there’s a good chance that if you try to scream like that you’d be on KZfaq. And so it all stays bottled up.
