I'll never forget when Jim & Tammy Baker got divorced because I was taking a nap that day and had the tv on & when I woke up, there was Tammy giving a speech at a church or something and announcing their divorce while tears were coming down her face and makeup was running everywhere, and it scared the shit out of me. I am a Methodist Minister. Nationwide, Church membership is on the decline. If a Church's Membership can no longer support an individual Church, that Church can be closed and its membership transferred to the nearest same denomination Church. The closed Church building can then be sold to another Church group. These days most traditional Churches are barely breaking even (Income vs Expenses). The Mega Churches (like Joel Osteen) are the real money makers. Chuches should be taxed if their income exceeds more than they need to support the day today operation of the Church. They should pay taxes on non Church related Income. Only the Place of Worship, the Minister's Residence and a building doing Church work (like a homeless shelter) should be tax exempt. Some Mega Churches (including the Catholic Church) own a lot of non Church related Church Property which should be taxed. Pastor do not pay taxes on their salary. Their supposed lower salary is based on them not having to pay taxes. Churches do have to pay a "Franchise" fee to the Home Church Denomination. The biggest problem is accoutability. Churchs (expecially Mega Churches) aren't required to release their financial records to the public. So we don't know the Pastor's Salary, the Church's Income and Church expenses. In the Methodist Church our books were always open to the Public (even though they didn't have to be). Each year the Church Membership was presented our annual budget to vote on. Everything was explained in detail. Total Income (Tithing, Sunday Collections, Annuities and Fund Raising). Total Expenses (the Salaries of the Pastor, Church Secretary and Organist, building maintenance costs, Utilities, etc.) All Churches should be required to have this kind of visibility with their financial records.

1980 was the peak of American religiosity. Something like 80% of Americans were members of a church. No point in American history came close to it. There are still a lot of Joel Osteen fans, whose theology barely qualifies Christian, though they're all a lot older. Low rent evangelicism like Benny Hill appeals to and exploits poorer people who think they might reach the American Dream by having a transactional relationship with God. It's a total heresy. Billy Graham appealed to middle class Southerners returning from the war and saw segregation as bad for business. Post-Graham evangelicals came in two camps: those repackaging the fallout of segregation (especially after forced bussing) and the outright con artist types like Benny Hill, Jim Bakker, the Osteen family, Pat Robertson, etc. Robertson was arguably the most moderate of the post-segregation brand. Very strange period for sure because low rent evangelical charades had total synergy with American greed of that period, even though its roots started by helping uprooted, illiterate Blacks during Reconstruction

I wonder now if it is just an American phenomenon, after hearing this clip that Benny Hinn’s show airs in 200 countries every day.
@vannavanity1195
@vannavanity1195 Жыл бұрын
@TheMadvillainy I highly doubt that Hinn's show airs in 200 countries. TBN gets carried in about 75. It's a complicated topic though. First, churches notoriously inflate their numbers by double and triple counting, which doesn't factor those who only attend on key holidays throughout the year. (Rodney Stark did revolutionary work on this topic.) Second, church attendance is very low in Europe. (Poland has a 40% reported Church attendance and that's the highest. Most countries there are closer to 10%. The Anglican Church makes up less than 2% of England's population.) Third, it's cultural. People don't convert for doctrinal reasons but because of kinship networks. I don't see secular Euros watching his programs other than a few thousand. Prosperity theology might appeal to low grade pagan Hindus out of India. I don't see it having cultural significance outside of Latin America (for complicated reasons), the Christian parts of Africa, India (which has a Christian minority), and Korea (complicated story but a lot of that has to do with Billy Graham). Maybe add in Australia and Canada. Prosperity theology is a post-Reconstruction phenomenon. For that reason, it's going to draw in Americans the most. Demographically, Prosperity Theology churches draw in the lowest income brackets too. Hinn and TBN are not at all transparent, so I'd be curious if he's really worth $60 million anyway. They're con artists. Part of the con is to sell how successful they are. Pentecostals make up less than 5% of the US population (on paper). It's fringe even within Christian circles. My town had tons of Pentecostal Churches. None of them ever seemed to be rolling in money. Actual church attendance across all of these groups was small. The most successful one had a few hundred, but it paled in comparison to several HUGE Baptist churches. It's all hard to say, but I doubt the numbers he's claiming. He might be worth $60 million. It's not impossible if he's getting 500,000 to donate (10% of his pool). I don't even see that at my church, which is super wealthy and historical. They're rich and some even Arnold Schwarzenegger rich, but no way is 10% of the parishioners donating at Mass.

Wow!! Ernest Angley!! His church was my go to church back when I was a kid!! Though his over the top mannerisms is one of the first reasons I started questioning religion. At the end of his service he'd invite people down to the right side of the theatre to offer personal prayer. One time I went down there and there was about 4 rows of people. When it started you'd hear people crying and making some crazy ass noises. Then Ernest would come by one by one to everybody "bless" us and bop us on the fucking head to make us fall back into the seat. My aunt was crazily into him and whenever she couldn't go to church she'd put him on TV and put her hand on the TV during prayers and such. She's always be taking money to give to the church when she didn't have too much to give while Ernest was making millions. He died a few years back, at the age of 99, just shy of 100. The hallways leading to Sunday school for kids was just lined with pictures of demons and other scary stuff to scare the kids into religion basically. After I started my shift into being non religious, I went a few times and I would tell my aunt I'd take care of the donation and then just not put anything in lol. That was a nice little trip down memory lane, never thought I'd hear that name on this podcast lol.

As someone who lives in the Bible belt themselves, church buildings often are used over different congregations all the time. Someone wants to start a church, there is a building available, they use it, they don’t get enough people or money, and they leave. This happens all the time. in my area, a lot of these churches are independent and are not associated with any other organization. I guess it all depends on who actually owns the building.

Personal income is taxable, though state laws vary as to whether it is taxed or not. Illinois does not tax military pay and it was my state of residence, while I was in the military. So, I was only paying Federal tax. It depends on whether the preacher or priest is actually paid a salary or whether they are financially supported by the Church. If the church is covering the expenses, it is probably tax exempt. If they pay the minister a salary, than it is likely taxable, though not necessarily other allowances included in the position. If you think about it, the minister is often provided a home, by the parish/congregation, in which they live, rent free. Parishoners might bring them food, which reduces the amount they actually purchase, for themselves. You don't have a lot of expenses, so, salary made not be large, Also, at what level it is taxed may not be the same as other streams of income. As far as evangelists, if they are registered and recognized as a church, they are tax exempt in regards to the money they make via contributions. However, the use of those funds could bring them under scrutiny from the IRS and end their tax exempt status.

Mega churches should have to pay taxes, those are profit centers. The church down the street from me (and most small neighborhood churches) actually still feeds the homeless and does charity work in the community and beyond. Taxing them would likely just take away from that charity. the pastor makes less than most uneducated people with a full time job.

Yes, a church can go out of business. Happens all the time. If a pastor steps down or a small church gets absorbed by a larger church, that happens a lot.

Billy Connolly did a bit about (I think it was) Benny Hinn (one of those faith healers) where he brought a deaf man up onto the stage and said that he was going to heal him. He violently shoved his fingers into the deaf man's ears and said "say Jesus!" to which the deaf man did yell "Jesus!"...in the same way one would should you stub your toe.

If it has not been answered yet, many churches over the last few decades have "rebranded" to change the image/conceptualization of church. So many crusty sounding names like "Podunk First Baptist" were rebranded as "River Church" or a new church opens just called "Mountain." They are each still affiliated with a denomination, that they do pay administrative fees to, or they could be independent and not do that.

A church doesn't have to pay land taxes. As a christian, yes televangelists piss us off to no end. A preacher is Suposed to be a teacher, he is suposed to instruct his flock on how to read the bible (literal&figuretive) what each passage means, and how it pertains to modern life. The preacher doesnt get paid persay, he takes the tithes (money you get from the flock) and he is supposed to take the tithe and pay the elec, water, and upkeep(new roof, plumbing etc.) Then he uses the extra to help the flock who might need it. After that, then and ONLY THEN, a preacher may take the rest for his living (food,water,electricty). No tithes are taxed because it is volintary it cannot been taxed. It (tithes) is a charity. Now the P.O.S Televangelgist get the tithes too and rip off poul, misguided, simple minded, ppl who believe, or the elderly who cannot leave their home. Yes they are the vipers, they have destroyed the opinion of religion in general. But its a slipperly slope. If you tax the tithes of the scum sucking tv preacher, then you have to go after the good preacher who lives hand to mouth who feeds, clothe, drives and sits with his flock. Is it fair? No. But if you punish one you punish all. And thats b.s.
