I live in Texas and when I first got my license 20 years ago I just went down the street to a small office next door to the fucking Chinese take out. In and out in less than 20 minutes. I renewed my license a few years ago and found out I had to go 20 miles to this gigantic government building. When I told a friend I was going they told me to sign in online and make an apt. otherwise I’d be sitting there for hours. Sure glad I listened to them. I get here and there’s about 300 people all sitting down in this big ass open room. Soon as you walk in all eyes on you and shit. I sit down and start hearing people’s numbers being called and people saying they’ve been there for hours and this is bullshit. People all laughing that I just got there and I was going to be here forever. 5 minutes later. I get called up. And I mean it. Everyone near me wanted to kill me. They had no clue how I got in so fast. I told them. All of a sudden people start bum rushing the counter demanding shit. 😂

I just had the same experience. When I took the test to get my license at fifteen, the place was, in fact next to a Chinese restaurant. I moved away for a few years and then when I came back I went into a government building and changed everything over. Renewing it this time I made the appointment online and I had to make the appointment months in advance to get in. When I went in to do it even the appointments were backed up and there was a crowd of people who had to take the test because they couldn’t get in and their licenses had expired.

I lived for 10 years in Louisville. I know exactly what he's talking about and pretty sure exactly what location. But in a small metro of 3/4 million people, there's only ONE place to take your driver's test and yes, he's right, 3 to renew your license. EDIT: Also you can only schedule a driver's test online every Friday from 8:00am to 8:10am because that's when all the appointments get full. It took me nearly 6 months to be able to get in to take my tests.
@aaronswink8554

And with the driver's test, you never leave the parking lot. No street driving, no highway driving, nothing. That would explain the inability of anyone in this region to know how to merge onto an interstate. If Jim goes crazy at the DMV, I must ride shotgun with him sometime during Louisville rush hour (all 20 minutes of it.)

Come to Australia! You will get your renewed license mailed it to you about a month prior to expiry date along with invoice detailing how to pay. You can, of course, simply pay online beforehand or after you get the invoice and your new license will be auto activated/validated in the system. You would need to visit an office if you need to replace photograph tho but that's the usual procedure everywhere and it's much easier and faster going through that process here!

Washington State (Snohomish/King County) was pretty quick. Didn't like that it was downtown but it was fairly fast, in and out. Colorado was a nightmare. They force you to take the written (computer) driving test again. Oregon was a nightmare because it's outsourced, so it's a pain to find where to get it done. Nevada was a nightmare. Paperwork has to be PERFECT, you can't show up early for the appointment, and that was during the COVID pandemic, so seating was horrible.

Went through that a little over a month ago. If you live in one of the rural counties like I do, you have to drive to another county that’s larger to do it. You have to provide everything in the world it seems to prove that you are who you have been your whole life and that you live at the address you’ve been at for years. I got mine for 8 years and did get the “smart” one because it really wasn’t much more of a hassle than it was already going to be to just go on ahead and do it that way. You used to just go to the circuit clerk’s office and the courthouse at your convenience, get your picture taken, sign and pay and leave with the new one in 10 minutes or less. Now you jump through all the hoops and leave with your old one stapled to a letter that you have to keep intact til the new one comes in the mail in a couple of weeks. Don’t know who comes up with these ideas.

Not sure about other states but it's pretty bad in NC now because so many people have moved here since 2020. I'm glad that I don't have to deal with it again for 8 years. If I move to a different town, I'm not even going to bother changing it until it expires in 2031.

1:11-1:22 and 1:40-1:58 have taught me two things .... when I'm spending quality time with my wife, I shall heretofor describe it as "I'm a frog gone a'courtin'", and ladies shit in private; not on sidewalks. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

The DMV in NE Ohio sux too! Literally a pain in ass to get one and so when they Lmk of a 8 yr term plan, I took it so I don’t have to do this stupid crap again for 8 more years and couldn’t be happier! Wish there was a longer one lol! Nothing worse than court houses and DMV! I’ve yet to hear of the “Smart” license? They never mentioned it and I was handed a paper ID til my new one arrives in 30 days, so I take it that in 8yrs I will have to learn about this “smart” bull crap lol

As a Louisville native I can wholly appreciate this story. Spot on with how janky it is dealing with licenses, renewing tags, etc.

When I got my Real ID, I had to go to Bowman Field. Downtown, NIA Center, and where he said on Hurstbourne didn't do it. But this was during the worst of the pandemic and appointments were months out. Once I was in there with my paperwork, it was done in a matter of minutes. Jim - make the appointment!!! And God help you if you're one of the lucky ones who can renew anything online in this state. I swear their online system has a million and one criteria to force you into a building, make you pick a number that will get called a year from now, and cry silently as you wonder why you're sitting in this mass of humanity while you die a bit more on the inside.

I’ve been to Kentucky and couldn’t understand 80% of the people that I came into contact with and they were all Americans and obviously from the south
