Well yes and no. You do need to eat real food like vegetables and some meat to be healthy and stay basically alive. You literally do not need sweets. If you cook everything yourself and have a moderate amount of activity either through sports or by just simply walking around enough everyday it's very hard to get fat. It is the sweets and fast food, which frozen food is also a part of, which are killing us. One complete chocolate bar has enough energy for two whole meals or one big meal.

I think a clearer answer is that shaming/insulting/harassing people for being fat _is_ bad, but the common problem on the opposite end where people pretend being fat is normal or healthy is _also_ bad. There's definitely a middle ground to be found. I've seen plenty of people take it so far that they try shaming people for _not_ being fat, just to feel better about themselves.

There are two extremes in this spectrum. On one hand, there's fat shaming. On the other hand, there's fat acceptance. Both are not okay. Ideally, we shouldn't shame each other. Still, we definitely should NOT just "accept" destructive habits like it's all good either.

They negotiated with the USA, but refuse to acknowledge or negotiate with their own government. The USA should not be selling weapons to the Saudis but US weapons are not the reason there is a war between Iranian backed Houthi rebels and the Saudi back Yemeni government. One man is responsible for causing the war in Syria and that man's name is Bashar Assad. Everyone else entered the war after his regime tortured dissidents including children and had nonviolent protesters shot in the streets. The SDF did the whole world a favor by defeating ISIS but ISIS is about to make a come back when the SDF loses US support.

The fat shaming argument seems disingenuous. I don't think most people making 'fat shaming' comments are actually trying to help anyone. It seems like an argument made after the fact to justify poor behavior. Judge: "Did you pitch a brick through the plaintiff's window?" Defendant: "Yes, but the window frame was old and not triple pane. I was trying to motivate the plaintiff to replace it for the sake of the planet." Bullshit Detector: "BEEP BEEP BEEP"

Things wrong with that argument. Triple pane windows cost money. Eating less doesn't. Triple pane windows dont save lives losing weight does. Nobody is throwing bricks at fat people. Being told you smell like cigarettes or I hate smokers doesn't help anyone either. And if it does so should fat shaming. Fat people take up more resources old windows don't. If I want to have an old window my neighbor shouldn't pay for me having a shitty window but in case of fat people they use up more tax money than fit people. So bad analogy now go run on a treadmill and stop eating whipped cream!

The only behavior modification I've ever seen insults and mockery accomplish is to get someone to shut up. Shutting up won't help with obesity or drug addiction. I'm sorry to hear about Jim's mother, and I agree it is a very real medical condition. But again, I stand by James' point of view--we shouldn't be shaming anyone. Jim already said it himself, they are already ashamed of themselves, we don't need to make it worse. And that's the problem. It's a serious issue people should be asking for help about, but the shame is so heavy, people don't even want to admit the problem in the first place. Addiction needs to be treated like an illness or disorder because it is one. And not to be pedantic, but being overweight is slightly different to other addictions, in that it's the most physically obvious, and there's just... no way hiding it lmao.
@davefancella
@davefancella 4 жыл бұрын
There are also other causes besides addiction. James Corden isn't overweight because of a food addiction, I guarantee. That's what separates being fat from being an alcoholic. I know, I'm a fat alcoholic. I quit drinking, and I eat just fine, and I don't make excuses for my weight. If I had a food addiction, I would have had to treat it when I was in rehab for alcohol. The shaming of addiction actually makes it an order of magnitude harder to go looking for help. It also makes it harder to adjust to a society that considers alcohol addiction to be socially acceptable as long as you don't beat your significant other. Meanwhile, assuming that addiction is the only cause of obesity makes it several orders of magnitude harder to try to get thin and to live in a fat body. THAT'S what's wrong with fat-shaming.
@bramvanduijn8086
@bramvanduijn8086 4 жыл бұрын
Also, shaming is counterproductive. A large part of addiction is that the stuff makes you happy. Food makes fat people happy, when you shame them they become unhappy so they start eating. Now they are even fatter. Good going genius, you just made the thing you dislike worse.

@@bramvanduijn8086 Many thrive on other's suffering, so... shaming is actually a rational move on their behalf. Now that kind of behavior should be treated with excommunication by society, but I'm afraid we are not living in those kind of societies. Most people are either assholes or cowards so they will never stand up against the abuse of the innocent, or even worse, will target anyone who attempts to do so, in an effort to gain respect of the pack. you miss the point Bill Maher is making (in my opinion) - being fat is not ok. It may be medical condition, it may be poverty, fat person deserves respect - but just accepting that "people are fat, what can you do" is not helping. Telling fat people that being fat is just their choice, that it is beautiful, is wrong. You should respect the fat person, but you should not respect the condition spreading around like wildfire.
@Marco48375

Agreed. The point they seem to want to make is that we shouldn't normalize or applaud being fat under the umbrella of being happy with yourself, as bottom line it's just not healthy. He starts off saying, "You don't think smokers feel like shit when they light up?" This argument would seem to imply that shame is felt inherently by all addicts -- at least by those with a decent penchant for introspection. Then he completely negates that by saying fat people shouldn't get a pass on the shame game, which would imply that the solution to already feeling ashamed is...more shame, just from other people, I suppose? Weird logic there. I get there's such a thing as good-natured ribbing, but I think looking at it from a standpoint of comedy isn't the same as looking at if on a day-to-day basis. In a comedy setting, you get a bit of leeway because everyone's there under the understanding that what's being said is meant to be humorous -- even when it falls flat. However, using a national TV program to tell ordinary people they should go out of their way to target people they know with unprompted, shameful harassment because they're having problems with eating (or for any addiction) doesn't just show a lack of empathy, it's counterproductive. These are people who are already relying on a substance, at least in some degree, to help them cope with stress, anxiety, and depression. Relentlessly calling them out on that: 1) is antagonistic, and doesn't inspire them to take your words to heart, and; 2) causes them to spiral deeper into those psychological issues that fuel their dependence, making them prone to _worse_ behavior, not better. Think about it -- if someone already "eats their feelings", and that's causing them to struggle to maintain a healthy lifestyle, the solution isn't to purposefully give them _more_ negative feelings. There are ways to bring up an addiction with tact. Interventions are structured in particular ways for good reason. Every addict _does_ subconsciously know they're ruining their lives, but being a dick to them for it doesn't really help them decide to commit to the difficult changes they need to make. It's incredibly rare someone breaks an addiction out of spite alone.

Not disagreeing with your main point, but he is not saying that the smoker is intrinsically shamed. He references anti smoking advertisements and labels and just a general culture of hostility towards smoking. They arent attempts to be a dick. They are all attempts to help. But the unavoidable sideffect is shame. That's what he's refering to. He's suggesting that if we try to remove the shame, we will end up removing attempts to prevent and help that are built into society. To be clear though, i do agree that awareness is not usually the issue. End of the day, addiction is a deeply personal issue and ameteur and casual attempts to help are mostly wasted if not dangerous.

Addiction is not a free choice. Shaming is pointless as a means to end addiction, in fact it worsens it, read up. Addiction is always a symptom of some other problem, shit life mostly. To fix it, the underlying thing needs to be addressed as well as the destructive behaviour. Otherwise, it will always resurge, being a known solution for other problems in the mind of the addicted.

How would fatshaming ever make anything better? Research shows people who are repeatedly told they are fat are more likely to PUT ON WEIGHT. Other kinds of addictions are partly seen as kind of cool. Food is the drug of the responsible people. But smokers, drinkers, and cocaine addicts are seen as partying, cool, risk-taking people. Policies against things that cause overweight is a good idea. But do you think that your mum would have weighted less if she had experienced more ridicule and hate?

Just like nagging someone who smokes or drinks. These devices are typically a symptom of terrible abuses, severe anxiety and depression. What happens when you stress someone out who has PTSD, anxiety, or depression? It makes it worse. Years later and I'm now 250 lbs. (after being 280 lbs, losing over 100 lbs over 3.5 yrs, then having menopause cause all that to do a U-ey and bring me back to 250.) I'd give anything to be 160 lbs again. Or to have a beautiful woman who is around 160-180. A bit of padding is beautiful to me. And BTW, I don't eat much! If I eat 2 meals a day, that's a lot for me. I don't have much of an appetite, I have severe nausea and vomiting issues, I suffer from severe to very severe chronic daily pain, and I'm disabled with a truckload of disorders and illnesses. I'm so sick now that I can't really take care of myself anymore. But I need to be fat shamed, right? That'll fix my issue, I'm sure. Honestly, how are we supposed to know which people have caused their own fatness and which are disabled or sick and cannot help it? How about we stop being DICKS to each other and look at others as humans who suffer just like we do and need some compassion and help. --- But we all know that isn't going to happen because we take too much joy in schadenfreude. I'm not bitching about Jim's opinion. We all have those. I just want to present another perspective, that's all.

The same way you should not accept the "body positive" idea that fat people are beautiful and you can never criticize the idea of being fat itself or all the hundreds of little things in culture that make it easier to get fat - jumbo sized portions, adding corn syrup and bacon everywhere, junk food being extremely cheap compared to healthy food, bad education on health, poverty and overworking of most people. Being fat (as I am) is bad, unhealthy and frankly at least unattractive to say the least - you may be beautiful DESPITE being fat not because of being fat. Your going to get that shame regardless. If it’s malicious that’s kinda rude but it doesn’t remove the underlying fact that they’re not wrong. I think the only way to heal is to learn to love yourself so you want to be better because self care helps keep you on track. People are going to be assholes to your face or behind it what’s the deference. I figure if you can go along and continue to harm yourself in any way you’re going to need a therapist and coach not nice words and kind lies. Even then your feelings don’t mean jack shit to the world so get help for you and grow.keep the toxic people strangers and keep the good ones close. That’s just my two cents have a good day

Hey Jim. Sorry to hear about your mother. My mother passed away in April. She also had problems with her weight her entire life. When I was 9 she got gastric bypass after a high risk pregnancy with my little brother. She dropped the weight, but as a consequence of carrying it for more than 30 years she had permanent back problems and was disabled the last 10 years of her life. She had a heart attack. She was 50. She’ll never get to meet her grandchildren, or even know their names. Or her daughter and son in laws. She got gastric bypass so she could see my little brother grow up. She got to see him hit 15. I’m sorry for your loss; you’re still wrong on this issue. One difference between food addiction and any other type of addiction is that any other addiction is allowed to be private. Nobody can look at you and know you’re a gambler. Nobody can look at you and know you do coke. Nobody can look at you and know you’re an alcoholic. Nobody can look at you and know you pop pills. There are plenty of functional addicts out there, as I’m sure you can attest. But, anybody can assume that if you’re fat it’s because of a lack of self control and not some underlying psychological or internal medicine issue. Unlike other addictions we’ve worked to destigmatize, being fat is still seen as a character flaw that you can be shamed out of. The other difference between food addiction and any other type of addiction is this: with the exception of dependence (you’d need medical intervention to quit, or risk dying) you don’t need to use the substances you abuse to SURVIVE. Food addicts don’t get the luxury of cutting all “food users” out of their life to prevent temptation. Food addicts can’t not serve food at their wedding so that they won’t be tempted. Fat shaming isn’t about food addiction or concern for a persons health. It’s about looking at a person and expecting them to fit the status quo. Plenty of recovered anorexics could tell you that. To quote one “when you’re average size and you starve yourself; it’s a dire medical problem that needs to be addressed, but if you’re overweight and you starve yourself? You’re a success story.” Besides that, we’ve made an effort in addiction rehab to stop shaming addicts because the literature has proven it doesn’t work; why should overeating be any different? We’ve been trying to shame people out of having mental illnesses for centuries: it doesn’t work. If you’re going to claim fat shaming is about food addiction, follow that logic - they’re addicts, they should be treated with compassion. All of this aside, bariatric doctors and obesity epidemiologists all agree: being fat is not usually within a persons control. If you want to argue against their research, be my guest, but don’t sit here and act like fat shaming or any kind of shaming for addiction of any kind is some kind of moral imperative for our society. The experts disagree with you, and as someone who didn’t kill themselves thanks to modern mental health care: I trust them more than I trust you.

The thing about weight loss is it's too easy to compare to other addictions. If only it were as simple as reducing your food in take. That's real rich coming from the people it works for, try being the people it doesn't work for. It's maddening and infuriating because it feels like a hopeless effort until you just give up and accept your situation. Not saying to stay fat but there is only so much a person can do. The point is everyone is different and pigeon holing people isn't at all fair. Start with how the BMI is a load of bullshit and go from there. My cholesterol has been high my entire life and I know I eat clean and I work out 5 times a week for an hour minimum. I can't lose weight. People seem to not know the difference, but not fat-shaming does not equal to accepting their bad habits For example: Fat-shaming: "God you're so fat, maybe if you didn't stuff your face with burgers you would be pretty." Not-Fat-Shaming: "I have been worried about you lately. I know you struggle with your weight, it's hard keeping weight off. Have you talked to a nutritionist about improving your diet?" Some fat-people might still get offended by the Not-fat-shaming option, since they have probably been fat-shamed through their whole life so now they are insecure about their fatness. (And they might be a bit in denial) Also. The key to giving constructive feedback is to not get the other person's defenses up since it will only cause harm.
@MrDzala

Shaming anyone is usually a power move to highlight your own strengths or hiding your weaknesses by lighting someone elses. Constructive feedback only comes from the person actually asking for it and wanting the feedback, otherwise it's wasted energy and time. Fat people know they are fat. The only really hard problem to solve in the society is parents feeding their kids to early diseases and a life of misery - that shit is horrible. We jail parents who give kids drugs or too much alcohol, but food is off-limits. Not sure what productive solution would be.

@Beta I mean I did want it to be an extreme example to show the difference of bringing up weight. You can do it in a super polite way or in a very toxic kind of way. There can be examples of inbetweens and the grey areas within the examples, but I really did want to show an example of what the difference is. Your example is more in the grey area and on the side of not-fat shaming. It really depends on the relationship and how the person is going to take it. For example, if someone I knew well said that to me, I would brush it off laughing, maybe bit off-put but knowing it's mainly a joke and retaliate. Then later alone I would remember it and stuff myself with comfort food and feel even more ashamed about my weight. Though with some people those jokes just roll right off them and might even help them. But yeah, TL:DR there is grey area, and it usually depends on how good your relationship is with the person, your intentions(is it in a joking manner or not), and on the person

I would flip that script on the way the questions are framed. For one, not that sad when old person dies? No, wording should be, it is sadder when a young person dies.

@@OMFGNAMEFAIL1 most likely not but you miss the point I was trying to make, all non-eating related addictions can be completely cut out of your life as to avoid further temptations, you can't do that with food.

Shaming doesnt help the vast majority of those who are overweight. This also doesn't recognize the fact that fat disorders exist and in a society of shaming those who are obese, people with these diseases are often ignored and told they are "non-compliant" despite all their efforts to lose weight. Misdiagnosed and accused of being liars is super common. This isnt about being ashamed, it is about the usefulness of verbal abuse towards people you judge by appearances alone. Its abusive. Its hurtful and it's not okay in any circumstance. Lipedema, Lymphedema and Dercums are real diseases and they aren't that uncommon.

There is a difference between the addictions you can completely stop drugs, alcohol and tobacco and live a healthy life. You can't completely stop food and live. Plus there are so many reasons for obesity that have nothing to do with over eating. Living in a country without free healthcare, deceptive food labels, bad education, poverty, medical issues mental illness, etc . Stacking the deck against some one and then shaming them is messed up.

Thank you, Jim. American society is not kind to anyone who doesn't fit the Barbie Doll stereotype. Anorexia, Bulimia and Obesity are just as damaging to humans as other fallacies. This is why we must have a more biopscyhosocial view of the human condition as our genes, mind and socialization mold us into the people we are. Also, it would help if more people had access to medical procedures that can augment their weight so people have the motivation to do as they should if they want to elongate their life span or just live with less pain and worry.

@Josip No, I'm not out of my mind. England's health care system is funded by it's citizens' taxes and people use a sliding fee scale to receive cost effective treatments and medications. People within the UK do not have doctor bills as those within the US do. As far as giving everybody access to free cigarettes, one never knows what will happen. Perhaps millions upon millions of US citizens will abort the notion that abusing tobacco is glamorous as it damages the human body at a higher rate than promotes its healing. Tobacco was never meant to be used in large quantities... but Americans can't help but mass produce poisons and horde and/or magnify the price of healthy items in efforts to kill off the monetarily disadvantaged. Also, organic foods are not always grown in the safest of soils as water can flow from anywhere and pollute organic crops.
