Chromium provides a passive Cr2O3 oxide film which prevents the bulk metal matrix corroding. Technically 10% is required although most manufactures use at least 12% to prevent localised corrosion near welds etc

1. Jeremy screwed up encouraging Jim to go with Cam's tentative and incorrect answer 2. chromium and chrome are not the same, so all the chrome talk was pointless unfortunately

That was one of the easiest questions. Every cheap mechanical tool you pick up from Halfords says ' chromium Steel' on it. Jim has an excuse, he's only ever handled one tool. But Jezza, you should be ashamed. Get a job in Halfords.😂

Silver costs about £750/kg, 10% silver would add about £30 to a set of stainless steel cutlery.
