Kick off 2018 in a big way and watch Guest Artist Jim Mongrain in this live, narrated demonstration from the Amphitheater Hot Shop from January 14.
See the final objects out of the annealer starting at 1:58:54.
The Guest Artist Series features world-class visiting artists at work in the Amphitheater Hot Shop. These special, extended demonstrations provide a fascinating peek at the techniques, artistry, and improvisation that comprise contemporary glassmaking. Our own Hot Glass Demo Team assists and narrates for each artist, answering audience questions in real time. Learn more at www.cmog.org/programs/guest-a....
James Mongrain was born in Minnesota and introduced to glass while attending Moorhead State University. He was able to study under his brother, Jeff Mongrain, an internationally-known artist. Though he’s studied and worked all around the country, one thing remains constant for Mongrain; his proficiency and talent for goblet making. He focuses on the technicality of the traditional Venetian technique, an aesthetic that continues to be his muse...www.cmog.org/bio/james-mongrain

as a kid, back in the day, I am 63 now, used to go to ports o Call in San Pedro Cal. n I LOVED watching the glass blowers, they made mini items n animals, I was fasinated, and I still am today, thank you for sharing I LOVED this!

Omygosh! I'd forgotten all about that. Now I remember. Ports O' Call was a marketplace near the docks. I loved watching the glass blowers as a kid (this was in the '60s/'70s). I wanted to learn how to do that. My dad worked in a glass bottle factory and would sometimes make little glass animals from the defective bottles. I still have a few.. Thanks for the memories.

Since the early 90's, my woodcarving shop has been right next to Pairpoint and down the road from the Sandwich Glass Museum. Years ago, I used to make blocks and paddles for them out of apple wood. Their creations still fascinate me to this day.

I can imagine a mighty Doge of Venice, seated at his banquet, with a servant setting this in front of him! In it would be gold-gilt sweetmeats from the Far East. At a mere gesture, the servant would set an array of goodies on a matching plate, using tiny, chased, solid gold tongs. Head bowed, the plate would be presented to the great ruler. "Oohs" and "aahs" could be heard through the sumptuous hall! Eyes would glisten in admiration and envy! The noble Doge would smile, and turning his head to an honored guest, indicate that this elegant treat should be passed thereto. Hands would clap in appreciation of the honor! THAT"S where Mongrain's art belongs! Bravissimo!

Hi Charlotte, it depends on the project! A simple tumbler with no decoration could take 10 minutes and a complex sculpture with multiple types of decoration could be built over several days. Practice definitely makes it take a little less time as the gaffer and their team figure out the most efficient way to build a piece. Thanks for watching!
