Yeah. That makes sense. You could see Vince McMahon look at how Shawn Michaels behaved back then and think thats exactly how Vince would have behaved if he had been a wrestler. 1990s Shawn and Vince do have somewhat similar personalties. And JR's story makes sense. It was Vince's company and if Vince wanted to do things that made no business sense, nobody was going to talk him out of it.

I agree with that sentiment, but at the same time, I disagree with JR somewhat. Yes, its not his particular job to manage Shawn, but if you know someone is causing a problem, then it needs to be dealt with immediately. Otherwise people are going to resent it, and people can lose discipline over it. Feel its a bit more complex then what JR makes it out to be.
@Jim-Tuner
@Jim-Tuner 3 жыл бұрын
@@frankydave I somewhat agree with that. Its difficult to tell from the outside how much of what happened was Vince McMahon directly enabling Shawn's behavior and how much of it was the weakness of managers within the company like JR. JR was head of talent relations and if JR had no ability to discipline anyone in that job, you really have to wonder what that job title meant. And JR never says he went to Vince McMahon to point out (lets say) Shawn's obvious drug problems. But on the other side, some of these things - like Shawn doing a tantrum in the middle of a PPV against Vader, the curtain call, Shawn getting beat up at a bar - were known to McMahon and he took no action. And the other thing is that the "power" of the Kliq was really the power of Shawn Michaels to go directly to Vince McMahon and tell him to do things like fire people or push them down the card.
@frankydave
@frankydave 3 жыл бұрын
@@Jim-Tuner Here, I think we have answered our own question in a way. I played the clip bad, and while you are right that JR didn't say he went to Vince, I suspect JR knew his place, and knew the consequences if he voiced his opinions/concerns/criticisms. So when he says other wrestlers were making excuses for why they were not bigger stars, I think it is disingenuous for him to say that. It's easy to say they could just leave, but at that time, there might not have been a wealth of wrestling promotions to go to, so your options are limited. If the top boss isn't clamping down on bad behaviour, there really isn't a lot you can do. Like you say Shawn and the kliq seemed to have the power in WWF, and I'm sure I've heard it said that the likes of Bam Bam Bigalow, and one of the Qubecers felt the wrath of them, and run out of the company.

Shawn Michaels was entertaining to watch in the ring but he sounded like a complete jerk backstage back in the 90’s. I can see why Bret Hart didn’t want to work with him at that time.
@stevewardlaw
@stevewardlaw 3 жыл бұрын
This is a very naive view. Another way to look at it is this... Shawn was turning 30. Bret was in his late 30s and didn't want to pass the torch, even though Shawn had put him over multiple times, most famously at Survivor Series 1992. So he used his own locker room influence and 'respect' buttons to stay on top for another 2 years. Bret always gets a pass on this issue, but the truth is he didn't really make anyone in WWE or WCW except Shawn, Yokozuna and his own brother Owen. Off the top of my head, Shawn put over Bret, Razor, Diesel, Austin, Benoit, Orton, Bautista, Cena, even the young up and coming talent Hulk Hogan, most of them at WrestleMania or Summerslam (shows that really matter.) In fact, I would argue Shawn was the #1 babyface of the company who everyone wanted another title run for sometime between 2004-2010 when instead we were getting Cena and Bautista's 2/5 matches rammed down our throats. Now with that said, Shawn and Bret are 2/3 of my top 3 in-ring all-time, sooooo, I guess it worked out ok for them both :D

Sure Austin had the gimmick and the character down to a tee but it was his matches with Bret that proved he could also roll with the big boys in the ring and have classic matches, its hard to name one stand out match of Austins in WWF before his matches with Bret...and lets not forget there are stories of Undertaker standing by a monitor backstage during the WM14 Shawn Vs Austin match to make sure Shawn put Austin over so that tells you everything you need to know about Shawn at that period. You say Bret did not make anybody in WWF or WCW apart from Yokozuna & Owen (and missed out the biggest, Austin) but who did Shawn make apart from Diesel? You mention him putting over people but everybody you mentioned were already stars in their own right when Shawn put them over. Shawn did not make Austin, Razor, Benoit, Orton, Bautista, Cena & Hogan did he lol? Who in WWF can you say "he would not be a big star if it was not for Shawn Michaels" apart from Kevin Nash? Just for the record i dont think there is anybody you could say that about Bret either apart from maybe Owen because Bret lobbied for him to get the rivalry heel position in 1994

@redeyed ronin I think he's been a much more reliable and consistent source than his bitter detractors who had everything to gain from lying about him. Vince and Jericho have both said that the Self-Destruction DVD was not the truth. In fact, Jericho added that Vince pressured everyone into deriding Warrior; this was Vince's post-court vengeance. There were plenty of guys who liked Warrior and contradicted those negative accounts, but the interviews are strewn throughout KZfaq, not collected in a mass-produced DVD. Interestingly, the people who liked him were not the ones competing for his spot. I'm not saying that he was always the most likable guy, but he found success on his own terms and rubbed people the wrong way BECAUSE he was always straight with them; he wasn't some two-faced politician like Hogan. I guess people would rather someone pretend to be their best friend and then stab them in the back. Warrior rightfully didn't trust hardly anyone and was very selective about whom he befriended. He did things his way and got out of the business with his considerable finances and mind intact. Who has more of a reason to lie: someone like that or someone well past their prime who is clinging desperately to the business for cash and self-validation?

I forget if it was said in one of Michaels' DVDs or by Bruce, but they made it sound like f you told Shawn to walk across the street he'd fight you tooth and nail, but when showtime came he'd do a handstand across the street after setting hot coals down. He'd go above and beyond what you asked him to, and he was legitimately invested in the WWF as a company. He even learned wrestling from a television production standpoint which helped him while running television shows for his wrestling school. I think Bret Hart views himself as a martyr and that his attitude in WCW probably wasn't all that different from when he was in WWF. As for Shawn's promos, yeah they were controversial, but they were good and sold tickets, and the Michaels/Hart feud is something talked about over twenty years later.

What's so crazy about Vince being a closeted homosexual? It's not like his generation or social circle is super cool about it, and plenty of gay dudes his age hate that about themselves too which would explain his enjoyment of classic gags making fun of gay dudes. When he took over the franchise they went from guys who looked like Bruno Sanmartino to oiled up action figures like Hogan. Look at other old dudes who everyone thought were macho and super straight who turned out to be gay. It's not super uncommon, especially for people his age.

Yeah lowkey everytime I see Vince now,I see cross dresser or similar energy to Bruce Jenner. Consider the source. Bret was great, but all know he HATED Shawn. At least back then. People tend to talk shit about other people they hate or dislike. By now, we’re all aware of the smoke Bret had for the office, too. And we know how it turned out. He came off as “I got smoke with the WWF, its Mngt, and their guy to take my spot! Here’s a crude, embarrassing rumor (or fallacy) about that guy, for the fans to chew on...”

Shawns attitude may not have been great, but this is wrestling and we want to see people with attitude and talent. You only need to look at current WWE to see a bunch of well behaved, corporate sports entertainers. And it's boring, both in the ring and behind the scenes. Wrestling needs rebels, I doubt we'll be disecting Drew McIntyres career like this in 25 years time because he's a good boy who just does as he's told. .

@Jim-Tuner 3 жыл бұрын
@@skybluerob1 The money isn't guaranteed. Both networks are extremely upset over the ratings WWE is delivering. Both networks could at any time re-negotiate those deals which could financially destroy the WWE. The deals are being sustained right now because the ratings are being blamed on c*vid. But if c*vid goes away and the ratings don't improve, the networks are not going to continue to pay what they are paying.
@skybluerob1
@skybluerob1 3 жыл бұрын
@@Jim-Tuner I didn't know that, I thought they were guaranteed as long as WWE fulfils it's side of the deal (ie live programming every week). Then there's the Peacock deal, essentially guaranteed PPV income for the next 5 years regardless of the tosh they serve up. To be fair, Covid is having an impact, it's not the same without fans, but again, I can still see the WWE serve up the same sterile stuff for the foreseeable future.

Ultimately though this was Vince's near downfall with almost losing to WCW. During WCW's 83-weeks victory of the MNW.
