Hardest part of packing a drive over pile is keeping it in bonds as the more you drive over it the pile walks out more difficult without proper space on all sides, which I find rare on most dairies here

Hey guys. When you laid the silo stop down, did you have anything holding the seams down until you put the plastic over top? Or did the stone dust on the edge hold it tight enough?

It is not powdered limestone but more of a sand textured. The corn is for feeding dairy cattle so it is an energy source and a roughage to provide for proper rumen function.

Silage cannot be only used to feed, you also need to feed them dry hay
@samkom33
@samkom33 2 жыл бұрын
@@eti2332 a cow can survive quite long on only corn silage! But if you want to feed a milk cow that shall milk say 100 pound quality milk a day you need more! A standard milk cow ration can be for example 600 kg corn silage + 200 kg hay + 100 kg straw + 100 kg barley + vitamins and minerals.. But usually its a veterinar feed expert that set up a feeding plan after what feed the farmer can get in hes area.. say cotton seeds ore leftover corn from etanol production and so on. 😀

Yes, they use 2 layers of plastic to limit the oxygen and allow better fermentation of the silage. They milk about 3,200 cows there.

That drone position is called on the hood as I was on my last battery and it was down to 10% battery which was enough to still run the video camera. I landed the drone and positioned it on the hood of a truck that was on a hill to finish. If you wish to make a donation to the University so I could buy a few more batteries I will attempt to do a better job next time. :-)

From your statement I am assuming you have never been to Stone Ridge Dairy and you have never had the privilege of meeting the owner. Stone Ridge Dairy is one of the best managed farms I have ever been on. If you classify lazy as a person doing what they enjoy most of the day then I would have to agree with you about the owner being lazy. Every time I have been to the farm the owner has been there working with the employees and he appears to love working with the cows and in the fields. I am really glad to know that you can make a living on 40 cows as I found it hard at times when I was dairy farming milking with a 150 cows. I never had your opinion on larger dairy farms as they help keep dairy support businesses going in our area. I also know the owner of Stone Ridge Dairy is very supportive of the community and supporting the dairy industry in Illinois which he has repeatedly demonstrated. Large dairy farms also have a major impact on the local economy. The following is from a report titled “Dairy in Pennsylvania: A Vital Engine for Economic Development”: Pennsylvania is home to a mixture of large and small dairy farms. While producing milk, these farms spend most of their money locally. About 85 percent of their income is used to support local businesses and the community tax base. In doing so, dairy farms create a ripple effect on both the agricultural industry and the economic well-being of the commonwealth. When a dairy farm spends money locally, it creates a multiplier effect more than two times the original dollar. In other words, for every one dollar a dairy farm spends, roughly $2.50 in wages and related business transactions is contributed to the local economy.

Not saying their are bad people or bad managers...just that it would be nice if the industry had the ability to make enough milk on a smaller scale to raise a family. You shouldn't have to milk 1000 cows and get paid less per gallon than bottled water.
