Jimi did this song at the time the Vietnam war was raging. The story seems to be Joe (a common name for soldiers) returned from Vietnam and found his woman messing around (even though the original song is much older). The lyrics is a dialog between Jimi and Joe where Jimi plays both roles. Yes, the playing with his teeth and behind his head is amazing but what's more fascinating to me is that he doesn't miss a note doing it. Even though this was way back in the 1960's, this is a live show with studio sound quality. Impressive.

You got it almost right - the singer isn't the one whose lady was cheating. "'Hey Joe' was written by a singer named Billy Roberts in the early '60s. The song is structured as a conversation between two men, with "Joe" explaining to the other that he caught his woman cheating and plans to kill her" - Songfacts.

You need to watch his complete performance at Monterey Pop (this concert). He sets the guitar on fire and smashes it. Members of the audience were shocked and didn’t know quite what to make of him. Lol.

@@reenateekasingh9684 It definitely had sexual overtones, plus it was a wonderfully anarchic rock and roll moment, like when The Who smashed their equipment on stage.

Jimi is the GOAT, everyone after him only copying Jimi. Outside of that theater, new and rising phenoms like Tina S. And Alip fingers are amazing, but still not the whole entertainer package. Jimi Hendrix was the whole package. The GOAT PERIOD

I saw Jimi play live several times and believe me, everything he did was real! Every Rock guitarist since 1970 has been influenced by him. By the way, at the end of this concert he burned his guitar, smashed it to pieces and tossed it to the crowd!

The song Hey Joe was covered by numerous groups in the 1960's including The Jimi Hendrix Experience. The Hendrix studio version is the most well known. This performance at The Monterey Pop Festival made Hendrix a star here in the US at the age of 24 after first bursting on the scene in the UK.

I'm rediscovering him with these reaction videos. I was 14 when I first heard about him, he played in California, I probably just missed him, too young to go to a university concert. I had a dream about him. It was more like a short vision, very real, i remember it to this day, . I was 16 when he died. It was tragic to lose a huge talent. Janis joplin and otis redding died around the same time as Jimi.

This is not a Jimi Hendrix written song, but a cover. The Watchtower was a cover of a Bob Dylan song too. You are witnessing GUITAR GOD!!!! Jimi is the G.O.A.T. Jimi could play the guitar with his teeth, over his head, behind his back, and between his legs effortlessly. Note too that what you are looking at is a right handed strat turned upside down and strung to play left hand, which means that all the stringing arrangement is reversed too. Jimi could play right and left handed, but preferred left handed playing. SRV, Prince and all the rest were simply his disciples, copying what he had done years before. Unique, talented, gifted, innovative, creative genius. That was Jimi Hendrix. How do I know? Seen him more than once live. Jimi died aged 27 in 1970, so here he would be around 24 or 25. Violence? That was usually The Who's forte, but at Monterey Jimi set fire to his guitar on stage, then smashed it up and threw it into the audience. Frank Zappa recovered all the parts, and had them all put back together. Dweezil Zappa, Franks son, now owns the guitar. That was not the first time either that Jimi set fire to his guitar. He did it at a gig on stage in London and swung the burning guitar over his head and nearly set fire to the stage curtains! That guitar was recently discovered in the back of an old garage in London, still charred up from the burning, and auctioned at Christies for a monumental sum. Note that Jimi did not use any particularly fancy guitars. The guitars he used were all standard strats, but adapted to the way he liked to play them. Note how you always hear that sparkling brilliance when Jimi plays. That's because he was always very selective about the strings he used, and in some cases he would slacken them so that other people could not replicate his sound, in fact in some cases so much that the guitar went completely out of tune. At one gig he actually requested Eric Clapton to come up on stage to tune one of his guitars. Unique, talented, gifted, innovative, creative genius. This was Jimi Hendrix. Nobody could touch him then musically, and nobody has since his death. The greatest monumental single loss to music of a generation. When he died I wept.

Monterey Pop Festival was his first US appearance and with it he change Rock & Roll history. Actually the whole festival changed R&R history. (You lads should watch it and the Woodstock film). Jimi died of a heroin overdose at age 27. Legend has it Jimi was tripping balls on some very fine acid during this performance and yet he played, sang and chewed gum all at same time! (lol) Rock On!

Just to make sure the story is correct, not heroin, it was prescription sleeping pills, took too many, had been drinking wine, threw up while knocked out by the pills, it got into his lungs and he stopped breathing.

Jimi Hendrix did not originally write the song hey Joe, it was originally written by another blues artist (can’t remember the name) but Hendrix put his own spin on it. A lot of blues music is either rooted in either a sad or dark and twisted place, this song being the latter, although not everything in life comes up roses. That’s what I love about art, you can color it any way you’d like.
