I heard a young man speaking out just the other day; I stopped just to listen to what he had to say; He spoke straight and simple-by that I was impressed. He said, "Once and for all, why not the best?" He said his name was Jimmy Carter and he was running for President, And he laid out a plan of action-made a lot of sense! He talked about the government and how it used to be, for you and me; That's the way it ought to be, right now: Once and for all, why not the best? He spoke plain and simple and I began to understand I was listening to quite a man, talking to me. I began to see... We need Jimmy Carter! Why settle for less? I'm Brazilian, Jimmy Carter's victory was very important for the process of redemocratization of our country after 12 years of military dictatorship. The 1964 coup in Brazil only happened due to the support of the United States in the 1960s. In the 1970s Jimmy Carter pressured the Brazilian government to start the process of political opening by withdrawing the United States' support for the regime (started in the 1970s and concluded in 1985), Jimmy Carter also gave political asylum to a great Brazilian leftist nationalist Leonel Brizola, expelled from Brazil by the military. Jimmy Carter did very well for Brazil and the world! After these actions by Carter, most Latin American dictatorships were overthrown by the people.

The military coup was going to happen in Brazil regardless of the CIA finding out about it and then supporting it. Almost the same story with Chile, the CIA gave their secret verbal support for a coup when they found out the military was already in the process of planning it. You're right when it comes to the fact that they were politically propped up thanks to the US afterwards though.

But he still felt like a real leader and someone who wasn’t abusing his power. I really like him despite some of the bad things he’s done during his presidency. Jimmy Carter and his presidency were before my time, and while I don't think I would have ever voted for him, my grandma voted for him twice. I can't explain why she picked him over President Ford, her fellow Michigander (and mine), but she's told me that she voted for him in his loss to Reagan because she didn't know how a cowboy actor was qualified to be president. In hindsight, it's ironic that Reagan's career as an entertainer ever made her question his competence, as she was (and still is) a staunch Trump supporter. (Meanwhile, I'm a Republican but can't stand Trump and would only vote for him out of desperation to stop a socialist from winning in 2020.)
