So many people have asked me about the full clip. Here it is!! The late and great Jimmy Driftwood home on his ranch in Timbo, Arkansas playing on his famous guitar! This is a tune that he called "Guitar Medley". Although Jimmy had a bad accident a couple of months before this was taped he could still play the guitar in a very uniquely way!! Enjoy!! I have a DVD of the whole session from 1988. Feel free to write me a message!

I'm a Canadian, but I grew up on Jimmy Driftwood, and I'll always remember my dad singing his songs and accompanying himself on the guitar, just as Jimmy did so well.

Another Arkansas legend. Glad he was with us and left us such great songs, stories, and helped start the Folk Center at Mt. View, Arkansas.

I spent the better part of an evening at his theater in Mountain View; not only got to watch the local musicians perform, but got to visit with Jimmy both before and long after the show. He was one of the kindest people I've ever had the pleasure to run into, from any walk of life. I wished that evening had never ended.

Jimmy Driftwood, John Quincy Wolfe, Vance Randolph, Bill McNeil, and Max Hunter did more to preserve Ozark folklore than anyone. They're all gone now, but their work will never be forgotten. May they rest in peace.

It is well known that Jimmie Driftwood was a teacher and wrote 'the Battle of New Orleans' and other songs to help his students remember historical facts. He also founded the Rackensack Folklore Society and the Arkansas Folk Festival.

I read that one of the reasons he wanted to start the folk center is that it would bring sewer/water and electricity(I think) to his town. Being that it would be a government building.

@@tylerbrandon460 I don't think that's true as there was already water & sewer & electricity in Mtn View & Timbo at the time.

I'm from a small town in Arkansas and Jimmy had come to another small town nearby and become a history teacher there. When he got done with classes he would hang out around the county and my father always said he was a lot of fun to hang out with. Sadly he moved before I was born and died before I was able to meet him.

I've never heard of Jimmy Driftwood until now. He must be an American icon. I thought when I first heard the name that he must have been the guitarist in Poison or Winger or someone like that, but upon seeing him (in this clip) He's way to old to even have been young enough to play with those guys even as far back as the late 80's early 90's.

I make my own instruments and it has turned into a "Hobby Business" for me in retirement. It's funny, but I unfortunately never heard of him before KZfaq. I did not realize that he wrote two of my favorite songs, The Battle of New Orleans and Tennessee Stud. This is a marvelous age we live in when we can share windows to the past through the internet.

Thanks for posting this gem of a video! I've just recently discovered Jimmy Driftwood at a campfire and have become a big fan. The melody starting at 1:11 is "Red Wing" - a tune later recycled into the song "Workingmen, Unite!"; at 1:50 I hear the "freight train" lick.

Thanks for this video, I became a fan after thinking of the song Tennessee Stud and wanted to hear the original, and I've been hooked ever since, there is something ethereal, chilling, and rocking about his style of country that NOBODY else comes close to, Johnny Cash sounds commercial compared to Driftwood

First 45 I ever bought, over 50yrs ago, was Battle of New Orleans, and remember his name on the label in small font, but only in the last couple yrs did I learn the story of Jimmy Driftwood. Does anyone know where the guitar is now? In a museum, private collection, or still with the family? I'm especially interested in what kind of wood the neck's made from.
