I agree with you and further remark a large part of the heavy rock sound was down to JP Jones, you just wouldn’t know it until you learn he wrote things like the Black Dog riff and his modern career contains lots of heavy hitters-see Them Crooked Vultures for instance-while Jimmy’s does not.

I know its been two years since this has been uploaded, but I'm pretty sure the acoustic intro in 19:50 was a demo take on the Rainsong from their Houses of the Holy album, if not then really similar.

@@gennarosnoises2408 i just though that they sounded pretty similar, especially with how the original song was just supposed to be an instrumental but after plant wrote lyrics many parts of the song had changed. The part that sticks out the most to me was at around 6:45 from one of their live shows, seen here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eMt0rM91ncq6Z4k.html

It is only recently that I realized Jimmy Page had to reconcile blues-inspired rock and roll with all this beautiful music going on inside his soul. That is what makes him such a genius and why the music of Led Zeppelin is so unique.

His acoustic work is just AWESOME! But I'm a strange guy, my favorite Jimmy Page stuff is Presence and Physical Graffiti!! Also, I've seen him at the A.R.M.S. concert with Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck in the early 1980's page played Chopin I'll never forget seeing him playing a BLACK TELECASTER!! ZEPPELIN 1 HE USED A Telecaster which you can clearly hear on communication breakdown. I've seen him with Paul Rodgers in the Firm twice. Also on his"Outrider" tour . He always amazed me with his guitar prowess!!! Love that guy so much!!

I would certainly enjoy a acoustic evening of Jimmy ...a lot of these trial and error workings are as good as his final decisions on what have led to the classic songs we know and love...are wonderful to the ear. Maybe a new album of this unissued workings could some day see the light!!

You know his main reason for creating Led Zeppelin was to have a rhythm section to showcase his talent on the guitar. Of course as we all know that Zeppelin became much bigger and wider and everything than Jimmy ever himself ever even imagined

Share a Moment I had the Other day. I was playing on my new LP i got and of course jamming on some Zep. I had The Pick up selector on the mid position and noodling some riffs When I played this one phrase and instantly It Had That unmistakable Page sound and tone to it. It literally freaked me out I had to go and check my pants after that it was wild. Just one of those "Wow" "Magical" moments that happens out of nowhere from time time that makes Playing guitar really enjoyable.

And one can see his session skills - I should say “one can hear his session skills “ - as he lets small “muffs“ stay as he is planning on doubling or tripling the guitar parts anyway. Keep the feel going and mix down later (especially as more tracks became available in the studio! Smart craftsman.

Great guitarist. Great playing. 6:30 on to about 9:10 reminds me a bit of the music at the beginning of Leonard Cohen's song 'Avalanche' and 10:27 which I think is 'Black Mountainside' reminds me of Bert Jansch's 'Black Waterside'.

@@kryllion lol who cares. Id much rather listen to White Summer / Black Mountainside than Bert's piece any day of the week. That song was not original to Bert, either. Couldn't care less that Page got even the slightest part from it from Bert or anyone else... He's written enough of his own fantastic creations that this particular issue amounts to a hill of beans as far as I'm concerned.

I believe the initial name for what later became Midnite Moonlite was Swan Song.

That’s correct. He released Midnight Moonlight with the firm, but you can find the early version as Swan Song with Led Zeppelin.

I believe that piano part is played by Dave Lawson, Jimmy Page wrote it for the Deathwish 2 soundtrack but it never made it in the film. "Alternate Jills Theme" is what its titled. You can view it here - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bqhhmKyQsbCakmg.html

All 4 all Had so much talent. But Jimmy was the stitching John Paul Jones the secret weapon to jimmy music ,ideas ,arrangements ,production. Beck and Clapton cemented themselves in the blues and Beck out of the 3 was the better blues player but I always felt Jimmy acoustic work brought out his heart and emotion. He brought so much , blues , rock n roll , folk , dynamics, to me the all around guitarist didn’t box himself in.

That first little bit sounds like it may have become "Wonderful One" that Page/Plant did on their Unledded tour. You have it listed as Midnight Moonlight - but every time I've heard Page talk about the restructured song which became Kashmir, it was Swan Song that he was working on. Either way, what a composer. Always love hearing Jimmy's guitar work by itself. Thanks for the upload :)

@@743c.lalremruata3 Yes, I love Led. I was born listening to Stairway To Heaven. The first sounds I heard marked me forever. My dad has been a fan of Led since his teens, it was inevitable that I would become a fan too...but it's not just my dad's influence. It's because Led is amazing and Jimmy is a fabulous guitarist who touches my soul with his wonderful songs (and remember, Jimmy formed Led...)

Also I remember hearing the song by Led Zepp " In My Time of Dyin " during my drug years and made me think about death and Jesus. Then a hippy friend that dug Jesus told me more of Jesus love and forgiveness and how I could also know Jesus love. So in 1981 I cried out to Jesus and wow man He came into my life and I had and have so much joy and peace and now know that through Jesus when I die I will be with Him in Heaven. This might be a stupid question, but is there info on where these were done? I've been studying him for over 45 years and I'm still finding things that I have never heard before. As a kid I had some weird early Page studio work that was released on budget cassettes and sold at Woolworths of all places. But I haven't had those for over 30 years. I'll have to hunt them down again.

Hunt hard and determinedly! Many of us could benefit from the hearing/studying of those tapes. WHEN you find them (not “if”, I have a good feeling about this) have them carefully preserved on digital media (I would have them simultaneously reserved on analog media as well - through appropriate mastering gear. Major Point being, get them on solid, new media without playing them any more than you must! Each play degrades the quality.) Cheers and God’s blessings…

A lot. People like Page, Hendrix, Zakk Wylde, even Slash practiced like 6-12 hours a day before they even became famous.They carried their guitar with them everywhere they went. Sometimes they would have to take Page's guitar away from him at school and give it back to him at the end of the day. Hendrix used to sleep with his guitar, or fall asleep with it in his arms.

It’s in an unusual tuning as well, voicings not available in standard tuning. Guitar Player magazine had a tab of it years ago in the correct tuning, low to high - DGCGCD. There’s a few worthwhile tutorials on this. A truly wonderful piece. The 1st two chords Page borrowed from The Beatles’ (George Harrison’s) Something because George had remarked to Page how he liked the band but they didn’t have enough ballads or pretty songs. I’m paraphrasing but you get the idea.

Hexagon Harry.... That's actually JP Jones at the keyboard, working on a song titled, '10 Ribs & All/Carrot Pod Pod' during the Presence LP studio sessions. The piece was included on the deluxe version (2 LP's) of Presence that was reissued in 2015.

How much theory did page know ..The pentatonic , caged system..? finger picking , chords , Major scale , minor scale , what else ...?

He could sight read sheet music. He had to do this for his studio musician days; and he was much sought after.

@@SevenThunderfulPage wasn't able to sightread anything. He barely understood music theory when he was a session man.

@@robbiedaug he definitely wasn’t a trained jazz or classical musician but I gotta disagree with you and say he knew wayyy more theory than most guitarists will ever know/understand in their life.

@@SevenThunderful Nope. He didn't have to read music at all. He understood the chord changes written on the sheet, that's all.

As a session guitarist, he was known as 'Lil' Jim Pea' to prevent confusion with the other noted English session guitarist Big Jim Sullivan. Page was mainly called into sessions as "insurance" in instances when a replacement or second guitarist was required by the recording artist. "It was usually myself and a drummer", he explained, "though they never mention the drummer these days, just me ... Anyone needing a guitarist either went to Big Jim [Sullivan] or myself."[23] He stated that "In the initial stages they just said, play what you want, cos at that time I couldn't read music or anything."[33]"

Seems he heard a track on earphones as he played. Maybe he was overdubbing. Can anyone identify the songs these went with? -Doug, Atlanta, Georgia, USA
