Jim Donovan gives his thoughts on the Cleveland Browns firing offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, running backs coach Stump Mitchell, and tight ends coach T.C. McCartney.
Let's start at the top with Van Pelt, the offensive coordinator by title. Remember, Kevin Stefanski calls his own plays and really was the architect of the offense, but Van Pelt's been here since Kevin got the job. He's a great guy and a quarterback in his day when he played in the NFL, and one wonders now where he will be able to go.
You look at these last four years, and I think teams that would interview him would say, "Yeah, but you didn't call plays in Cleveland." That might be a little bit of a deterring factor for him, but he did a very, very good job here, specifically working with the quarterbacks.
With Mitchell, I do know this for a fact: Those running backs love him. Nick Chubb loves Stump Mitchell, Kareem Hunt really had a great relationship with him, and the young running backs always just lived on what he said. He's been with the team since 2019, when Freddie Kitchens was still the head coach.
McCartney has also been here for Stefanski's entire tenure. His position group, if you only look at David Njoku, had an amazing year. I mean, we've been waiting for David Njoku to have the kind of year that he had this season. You would have to think that McCartney was part of the reason for that.
However, Jordan Akins was also a bit of a disappointment coming over from Houston (that was a Deshaun Watson signing). And of course, Harrison Bryant continues to be the No. 2 tight end here, but tallied just 81 receiving yards this season.
Now, what is going on here? Jim Donovan explains: www.wkyc.com/article/sports/l... --

Much more important than all these coaches is a conditioning coach, because season after season the Browns experience far more injuries than any other team. This isn't bad luck but rather is the result of poor conditioning. In addition, far too more Browns are experiencing season ending injuries in training and this is completely inexcusable.

AVP was a quarterback coach. Browns A QB’s did a great job considering all the injuries on the O line. There was very little Stump could do with the running backs because of the O line. They had one bright star tight end in Njouku. Bryant is terrible, not sure how he hangs on every year. Stefanski not taking responsibility for the offense’s shortcomings. Not impressed with him at all.

Mr Rob Kerms yea baby, the first interview from the RB coach , he attacked his starting RB , you can’t make these things up , and after winning and making the playoffs, the first thing the Browns do is going after the coaches and fire them like they did something wrong

Think about it like this. In 2020 when Kevin had covid. To beat the Steelers at home. Who called plays? AVP. When the browns went INTO Pittsburgh, Kevin still had covid. Who called offensive plays?? AVP. Then against the chiefs Kevin is back. We lose. Who’s calling the plays??? Kevin… I hate that I love this team

@@phxdubr true, the defense was a complete no show in the playoff game, but this is a 4-5 win team without the defense. With that being said, this all revolves around Watson, imo. They are going to do everything then can to make the $230 million dollar man comfortable.

@@bobphillips3387 saying avp is a genius because he called one game in Pittsburgh couldn’t be more stupid. The play book was the same, there was zero crowd noise, it wasn’t even a real game. Kevin has routinely, throughout his career, taken good, average and bad QBs and elevated their game under his tutelage. When dummy’s like yourself point to one game of AVPs, but ignore YEARS of Kevin’s work, shows your inability to think about things critically. Also, if Schwartz was the reason we won a couple games, but it was definitely Kevin as to why we were beating teams 30+, and our defense was giving up 20+.

Stefanski and Alex Van Pelt were garbage here. This offense has never had life since the days of Mayfield. Only spark was Flacco who could bomb deep with accuracy. Now it's back to horizontal, take too long side plays, and trickery. The owner needs to demand better from the staff and go get a legit OC who knows how to maximize the talent we have on the team - just like Schwartz did on defense.

The Browns need an offensive line. They don't have one. They need the talent to protect Flacco and make holes for Chubb. Getting rid of Stump is possibly the biggest bonehead move Andrew Berry has made since he signed Watson.

For the toxic fans in here….Cleveland Browns draft ranking this year: #22 and yet we finished w/ the 2nd best record in the AFC using an off-the sofa 39y/o QB and a battered O-Line and zero run game. The Texans draft ranking? #1 and that was with TWO 1st Rd picks in Stroud and Anderson. They’re building a juggernaut down there and we’re paying vets through the nose just to stay competitive. It’s coming together. Just simmer down.
