In this video I will be documenting my attempt to grow pumpkins using the Kratky hydroponic method. We'll be looking to go from seed to harvest with these plants!
I've tried this on the channel previously and the pumpkin plant showed great growth. It seemed to love the Kratky set up and we had two pumpkins get to about 6 inches in size before we had to cut down the plant. It was overrun with powdery mildew and it wasn't sustainable to keep it indoors. I'll be looking to take lessons from that grow, and trying to get a successful harvest this year, as I move the plant out onto the balcony where it will get more wind and space, hopefully preventing that mildew.

Was super interested to see you try pumpkins. I've done honeydew in 40 gallon containers and the vines were massive. Pumpkins are a bit of a challenge. The real shocker was not the plant, but the SNOW! That's just crazy. Nice idea to cover the bucket with fabric to make it less utilitarian! Looking forward to more of your videos.

Thanks Matt! Was definitely a fun plant to grow and both times it seemed to really thrive in the Kratky set up. I think the weather fluctuations were just a little too much here and messed up the reservoir. Probably not ideal to bounce around between 3 and 30 degrees 😂

I always love your videos! You are so imaginative and dedicated to "learning by doing.". As far as the plant goes, maybe you did too much pruning while the plant was trying to adjust to the temperature fluctuations. Then again, maybe the plant got too cold during the snow flurries and could not recover. Oh well. Always fun! Thanks, Man!

I’ve never grown pumps inside, but I probably could. I’ve grown them outside in a little different type of system with great results. I’ll fill a 5 gallon container (no lid) with clay pebbles and coco which sits in a short black tub. I bottom feed them and they drink it up fast. I keep about two inches of water/food in the tubs. They are also heavy feeders, so start off normal and then a dose and a half when the plant gets bigger. A PPM meter lets you know the right doses. I also use a cheap $15 laser temperature to check many things. The plant was getting wind burnt and there is a technical term. The leaves transpire too fast and wilt. You have to stop all the wind. Cardboard at plant height around the deck might stop it? Wind speed is higher stories up then on ground level. It might help to use a water spray bottle and spray the leaves, especially underneath. If it gets too hot just drop a few ice cubes in and check the water temperature with your finger or thermometer. An air pump with a couple of stones would also help instead of a Kratky. That’s why I bottom feed them. Jack O Lanterns grow 10 to 15 feet long and inside I'd train it to grow in a circle at container height with either a big plastic trash can lid or something bigger and make it white. They like to cling on to anything like peas do, so once it starts circling it will attach to itself. Use bag or zip ties to train it. If it gets too big put a table or box on each side. If you let it grow on the concrete keep a temperature reading of that, in case it’s too hot. If the concrete is hotter than air temp then raise the container an inch up. They also have smaller pumps like Cinderella which grow fast and are quite good. Oh, either one of your lights would grow anything, they’re huge. You don’t need sunlight with those. I could probably grow a Jack O Lantern starting with 100 watt led and bumping up to 300 watt for the last half. That’s without sunlight. When you use grow light you do have to have some reflective walls around the plant to keep it from flowing everywhere. I couldn’t tell if you were getting direct or indirect sunlight. Hope this helps and good luck.

i saw an interesting vid where just a spray of 1 part hydrogen peroxide to 10 parts water was sprayed on leaves to combat powdery mildew...pot growers also use sulfer powder

I honestly think the heat pulled the oxygen from the water. were you switching to a new bucket with water and nutrients every week? if not could have been a salt toxicity or nutrient toxicity. I would run an air stone in the reservoir to keep oxygen in water if you werent. Water temperature is extremely important in dwc.👍🤙💪🌱🌳✌

Thanks for sharing bro! I’ve got an air pump I use when it gets hot (25+) to try and add oxygen to the water, which wasn’t really happening at the time I grew this, if anything temperatures were dropping pretty low at light (15ish).. maybe too cold?

The weather seems to be not really suitable for pumpkins. Imo, the only way to do it in this conditions fully inside with artificial lighting.

i'm very sorry, but, i think it's better to grow the pumpkins indoor with 12 hours/day of light and mabye opt for the atlantic gigant seeds, i hope my tips are useful. Thanks for the video!

Why opt for giant seeds? Those plants get huge, hundreds of square feet, I'd think something like a sugar pie pumpkin would be a better choice.

Atlantic GIant can grow to 2500 pounds, doing that inside would be silly.
