The Kratky method, invented by Bernard Kratky, is a passive hydroponic technique for growing plants suspended above a reservoir of nutrient-rich water. I have grown Bok Choy and Cauliflower using the Kratky hydroponic method. Others have been successful in growing kale, tomatoes, cucumbers and more using the Kratky method, however I find the Kratky hydroponics growing method suitable for leafy greens like lettuce, bok choy, etc.

I've grown a lot of stuff in hydroponics, and generally the results are more tender and better quality and than soil or anything you get in the store. The best thing I've ever grown hydroponically is strawberries. They taste like soft buttery sweet candy

@@CaliforniaGardening good. Just try not to submerge the strawberry crown. Make sure you grow from root crowns and not seeds

I love the Kratky method and have several things growing in it. It's much easier to go spy the three-part Master Blend mix than the separate parts. And you can definitely do larger plants. You just have to plan for it. I love being able to grow inside through the winter.

I had a horrible year this year with all plants dead in pots. Stunted then dead, so I am already planning on the stuff I need to do the Kratky hydroponics, instead of potting soil, next year. I don't do leafy plants and instead stuff like tomatoes, peppers, egg plants, etc...

Wow, really enjoyed watching this video. You make it look so simple. I see so many people planting with hydroponics systems but I’m yet to try it and your video really inspires me to give it a go. Thanks for sharing👍🏾

Probably be easier to mix all the powders into a pitcher of water with an immersion blender then mix that into the tub.

thank you for such clear instructions. However, I noticed most videos gardeners are using this method for indoors with a grow light. Can this be placed outdoors here in southern CA, zone 9/10? Would this work when temperatures range from 50's-100F?? or is this only for indoor growth? I would very much be interested in this, but do not want to invest if not proper for outdoor. thank you.

Thanks! I did mention it 8n the conclusion section, not great for growing non leafy plants. So lettuce, bok choy, herbs will work great, not the rest. The cauliflower never flowered, so should have mentioned that, you're right!

How much nutrients would you mix for a small bucket? 3 gal and 5 gal?
@GodsChild145
@GodsChild145 Жыл бұрын
Every brand is different and it tells you amount on the bag. For the stuff he is using a 5 gallon mix would be 12 grams masterblend 4-18-38, 6 grams Epsom salts, 12 grams calcium nitrate. Definitely read instructions for all brands and mix according to what they say.

How often should the water solution be changed 🤔
@CaliforniaGardening
@CaliforniaGardening 2 жыл бұрын
You do not need to change the solution. The plant life cycle will take up the solution as it needs. I had about 30% solution left after the plants died

@David-we3sb 2 жыл бұрын
@@CaliforniaGardening So do you just top off with tap water, or do you add more salts as you add more water? Thanks!
@CaliforniaGardening
@CaliforniaGardening 2 жыл бұрын
The idea is to let the water be consumed completely for the life cycle of the plant. After that, you can either discard the remaining water and start anew OR Add both water and the recommended salt amount for the water proportion you are adding
@David-we3sb
@David-we3sb 2 жыл бұрын
@@CaliforniaGardening Thanks for your response. Wow, so you only had to make the solution at the beginning and never had to water the whole time? Also, what do you recommend for lighting? There are so many options out there. I am just looking for some basic lights to grow some plants in the basement

Not inside your house they don’t. But they should be spray painted black to prevent algae from forming in the water because if nutrient water is exposed to light it will grow algae. Go check out some of the thousands of amazing hydroponic Kratky channels there are on KZfaq
