@Carnbyedward
@Carnbyedward 3 жыл бұрын
They actually weren't all that much different from the 30's honestly. Sure the tech was "Better" but it hardly made any difference. (And considering we can't talk about the 40's {Gee I wonder why....} basically tech slowed down and never really "Improved") They still were bulky, heavy, and a handful. However they did get lighter when some companies experimented with aluminium bodies. The 1960's changed all of that when the first "Modern" F1 car was made. Basically Lotus proved the tech right out of the gate.
@dylansmit3883
@dylansmit3883 3 жыл бұрын
@@Carnbyedward But the 50's would show what a front-engined F1 car would do, and at the same time shed light on the advancement made with the Lotus 49.
@Carnbyedward
@Carnbyedward 3 жыл бұрын
That was until Mid Engine was introduced. By that time they found out Mid engine was better suited. Also most cars were already mostly Front engine anyways. (Excluding that Audi Auto Union C/D V16 car which I believe was the ONLY Mid engine Gran Prix car, go ahead and quote me if I'm wrong. But don't count the very first cars from the antique age........ nobody counts them as cars really......just horseless carriages) They weren't really proving much in terms of speed until the mid engine designs started getting better results. And tire technology also improved causing cars to be FAR better than the 50's offered. So really, my statement stands and makes a valid point. Nothing really "Improved" they just got a bit faster with a bit better technology but it didn't advance fast enough to make any major difference. If anything the biggest improvements back then was the steering and handling. Because power steering was such a new concept, cars actually got better control using it. But if I recount in all of F1's years no cars had Power steering (I might be wrong. Anyone reading this, please mention that for others to learn as well for anyone who comes across these posts) so they didn't add them in. I do think the steering wheels got smaller as the decade drawn to a close and that's when we saw the 1960's cars with smaller steering wheels eventually. But probably in truth I'd call the 50's the "Aero understanding" years because they started to learn more about aerodynamics at that time vs before. There is some documentary videos here on KZfaq, if you fancy a little education. Check out how they used to think how aerodynamics worked back in the 30's then check the 50's. You'll start to get the picture how things went down as time went on. So yeah, the 50's really didn't improve all that much. It was more or less the same thing in the 30's with different looking cars and more manufactures getting involved into the sport. Also I think the 50's was also a time when reliability was a thing they were all trying to cap into since cars tended to break a lot. Getting cars to last longer but maintain power was a huge breakthrough.

Great comparison of the different eras/rule sets, though it would have been nice to see a car from the '50s (i.e. 250F, W196, etc.) and the 1.5L era (1961-'65) in there too.

the auto union type c is an absolute mad beast. It had a 6.5L supercharged V16 that ran on alcoholfuels. It was way ahead of its time. It could spin the wheels at 100mph and was sometimes fitted with 2 wheels to improve handling. It is an absolute monster

I don’t know if you can do this on AC, but a race including all of these cars with the slowest one driving first, & a 30-60 second interval between each car would make for a really entertaining race! Used to do that on Forza Motorsport 4 with a variety of different cars from all of the Mustangs in the game, to classic sports cars & even Honda Civics lmao

I wish I could love the current cars as much as I love cars from the late 90s early 2000s but they just feel bland by comparison. I know that's a crazy thing to say considering how insanely good they are but perhaps they're just too good? Quali laps seem too easy in them. They never look as though their going to bite or snap at the drivers. The challenge seems less. What do I know I'm just a sofa pleb but '96-2004, those cars were magic!

Won't miss the "sound", won't miss the ugliness, won't miss the DRS (hopefully that should go). My dream wish is that they massively reduce downforce and mechanical grip so we have some 60s era 4 wheel drifting going on, but they'll never do that.

@@C.I... Man if I had my way, F1 would just be more or less CART. Low wing downforce, high groundeffect, big ass tires, stupid amounts of turbo horsepower, and you can buy you chassis from wherever you want as long as it meets the rules.

The latest analysis on how much power each power unit has in 2020 suggests these results: Mercedes: 1022 Honda: 994 Renault: 985 Ferrari: 980 I remember that article where Renault claimed to have 1000hp last year but this was then contradicted by the rest of the teams, who were claiming that nobody was at 1000hp yet. It’s so cool to think how at the beginning, when the technology was new, you see very long gaps in the generations. But as it progresses the times between major innovations becomes shorter and shorter to become machines that can’t even compare to the old. Now think of this in the terms of rockets and 3D printing and all the other amazing tech being created improved and imagine what it will be like in the future.
