That will be a hard one to sue. One wheel _has_ to win or there will be even more copycats but it is likely they will not. even if they do, it will likely be impossible actually collect any settlement. The floatwheel comes in more than one package, that is as parts and the new owner is the one who actually makes a competing product. It would be really hard to A) find all owners and B) sue all of them. On top of that, it is pretty hard to sue someone who says: "I would not have bought a one wheel in any case". In any case, even if one wheel wins, they loose. They may get the floatwheel off the market but I expect if so floatwheel will just release all the specs as open source and people will be able to build them from scratch with readily available parts.
@electricstyl-euc6 ай бұрын
For the floatwheel the speed is greater than 22 mph you can go up to 30 mph see more.And range is much greater than the GT-S.
@freshlycharged6 ай бұрын
This is true about the Floatwheel top speed. But the same could be said about the Onewheel GTS tops speed so we just posted the advertised top speed in the video.
@chrisc7906 ай бұрын
@freshlycharged the difference is to go faster on a onewheel you are in a dangerous position riding pushback going faster. On a floatwheel you can ride faster more comfortably. Also the range is a big thing as well.
@chrisc7902 ай бұрын
@dezh2544 it's vesc, so they have duty cycle. If you hit 95% duty cycle, you can nosedive. But there is so much more power, so unless you want to cruise at 35 mph, you should be safe. Also, with vesc you can set the pushback to whatever speed you want. You can also have audible alerts for whatever speed you want or duty cycle you want or both! For example you could set that up to where you get an audible alert in your ear at 20mph and 25mph and 80% duty cycle. Yes I have heard some people's boards shutting down, but not many. It has never happened to me but Tony is fixing the bms in the v2 boards so soon it won't be an issue at all.
@anthonym72816 ай бұрын
Holy smokes, new Onewheel content on this channel! It feels like its been ages! Would love to see you guys make a video on a DIY Vesc board (how to choose certain components, what to be mindful of when building or having one built for you, etc). I like the fact that the Floatwheel exists as a (mostly) ready to ride alternative to FM. But if my only board broke and i had to wait a month for a replacement part to ship from one location, id be pretty bummed. At least with a DIY vesc, theres several vendors you could look to for replacement parts and you could have it at your door in a few days.
@sadanimal19506 ай бұрын
I dont think FM shouldve been granted the patent to begin with as there was a working prototype well before FM ever existed. the patent has stinted growth and development of their product when compared to other devices such as EUC and scooters.
@deanaoxo6 ай бұрын
Not how patents work. It's not the patent office's job to verify prior art. Anyone can challenge FM on the legitimacy of their patent. They can even sue for court cost if the patent(s) are found to be fraudulent. In short, you can not patent an existing device, there is also a one year rule once something is shown publicly.

Aw I'm a bit disappointed but glad you got this comparison out. Theres issues here that arent necessarily issues. Like the pre-set tunes being good enough for people to ride so you dont need to tinker with settings. The apps float control and floaty werent mentioned and both amazing apps. The extra safety you get from having access to everything like duty cycle and logs. And there was other stuff too like the parts arriving in 1 month which is actually much quicker and something else i can't recall right now but no matter still a good comparison from the US point of view. Anyway, I'm glad you got to talk about it and try it. Enjoy the ride!

I'd be interested in a video on the lawsuit, or more specifically your opinions on it and the ethics of using crypto to get a product that violates a US patent - though a somewhat questionable patent. How did you feel about it? I am generally pro US-style capitalism and think patents are important, but my experience with Onewheels has made me begin to think somewhat differently. Between the video of Ben Smither's "self balancing scooter" 7+ years before the OW, and what I consider to be Future Motion's poor stewardship of this product and community, I am rooting for their patent to be invalidated and would not feel immoral getting a Floatwheel. I've come to think the standard for getting a patent should be higher, and there should be some kind of stewardship requirement. E.g. if a drug company invents an important cure but 5+ years into production can't keep contaminants out, maybe they'd lose their patent early or be forced to use a manufacturer that could provide the quality necessary. Future Motion would fail a similar test for ongoing quality control issues like Pint X battery wires that break just after warranty, and for their unreasonable repair scheme.

Looks like a great product - however I have a problem with intellectual property theft. FM has to deal with the government and all the safety concerns - Floatwheel does not - they just ride on their coat tails while creating a more dangerous product that could ultimately result in additional litigation toward FM. You have to remember who started this sport, without FM there would be no sport - y'all are pretty quick to jump the shark. FM does have to learn to get along with their community a little better, I hear "Right to Repair" all the time, but that is part of FM keeping the sport as SAFE as possible, Floatwheel has no similar obligation. If FM kept up with the VESC community some there would probably be no need for competition, however from a legal standpoint with safety concerns in many cases they simply cannot. Maybe they need to have people sign a waiver to unlock the board's full potential or something ......food for thought. Even then waivers are generally only worth the paper they are printed on. That said even I'm thinking about VESCin my XR. FM certainly needs to do a better job with community relations and marketing...

Why do you refer to the Floatwheel as a copycat or a clone of the Onewheel? Its sound pejorative. You highlighted how it is different. Do you refer to the Onewheel as a clone or copycat of Ben Smithers' self balancing board?
@freshlycharged6 ай бұрын
Being pejorative is not my intention. When I use the word "clone" or "copycat" it refers to the fact that the product looks almost strikingly similar to the product that it is intended to replicate. Having seen and held the original onewheel by Kyle and having only seen Ben's device from watching videos, I would say that they look very similar and yes, I consider Kyle's version a clone of the original. However, the current Onewheels are nothing like Ben's original board so I would not refer to the current OW design as clones of Ben's design. The Floatwheel takes it's design directly from the current Onewheels and many of the changes such as the rails, tire and fenders are inspired or cloned from third party vendors.

Thank you for pointing this out. I didn't want to say anything about the language in my original comment, but it does rub me the wrong way to not realize that the first onewheels, were in fact closer to the Smithers boards, naturally, FM has had time to bring it to it's current state. One of Mr. Chang's old complaints was that the onewheel looked like it was home built, and he longed for a slicker more factory made look. He got that with the GT and we lost the best onewheel platform (which interestingly is still going strong).

I wanted a finished product, I could afford it, so I got the GT-S. That said, I hate FM practices, which was the reason I never bit on the GT, and decided to stick with my XR's. The GT-S is what the GT should have been. I am enjoying it for the most part. I do miss the smaller XR hub. I have an Enduro tire on it, which helped a lot, but I need the smaller hub TFL sells. The main detail to take away from this is that it’s legitimate competition and that will force both companies to create better products and give better service. Future Motion will lose a lot of their overseas market if they don't at least provide local repair solutions. From what I’ve seen in the Australian OW community, there will be scepticism to start with but the FW fits with the Australian mentality. The more people posting about positively in local OW groups, the more that scepticism will melt away. When people start offering servicing or just selling them fully put-together, you will get even more people and when there is a big enough market then many parts will be available locally. Meanwhile Future Motion might just go down with the ship rather than fix their issues.

I can't believe it took you guys this long to publish your video on FW. I almost thought you decided not to do it in fear of damage your relationship with FM. Generally agree, except I feel you guys didn't accurately describe FW's capabilities. FW is not comparable to GT/GTS. It out performs every FM wheels in just about every checkbox, including GTS. In some areas, FW out performs both GT/GTS very significantly.

Me and Buffalo New York USA area waiting till spring to pull the trigger on a float wheel ADV pro in about another 2 months when it's not so cold and snow melts. Any expected or rumored improvements that may happen by then?

V2 BMS is coming soon, so are drop in VESC kits for future motion boards as well which is exciting!

The new BMS should arrive before the summer (and the price will go up) but you will be able to buy that separately anyways.

@@MrJoefoefrombuffalo Tough call, yeah I would probably go ahead and order and maybe next year get the upgraded part(s). Winter has been so mild I think it will be frequent riding weather before it arrives :).
