In this video I try my hand at brass casting! I use old bullet shells (thank you to who sent them 10 years ago!)
to cast the door knocker I carve on the bandsaw. Nearly all my learning on this subject was gotten on KZfaq!! And little trial and error!
Please enjoy!

As a professional patternmaker I can approve you are officially insane. That thing is awesome! Jimmy, next time you cast something, please close your face shield. I knew an old aluminium foundry boss who had a form blow up in his face. From that day he was nearly deaf and nearly blind. A face shield would have saved him his eyesight. Also, dear watchers, if you try to cast brass: Don't breathe the fumes. They'll give you the headache and fever of your lifetime. It's zinc fever. You really don't want that sh*t.

As much as I enjoy the construction and renovation videos, these little art pieces like the ones from the old days in the New York basement workshop are the ones I really love. The immediacy of the creation from the rough sketch in the wood to the finished piece is just bliss. Thanks Jimmy.

Your ability to sit down, free hand draw an object on a square piece of wood then proceed to carve it using a bandsaw will never cease to amaze me. It is almost therapeutic to watch you work brother. Thank you!

Nothing like watching a true craftsman. Use the tools you have to the fullest. I haven’t cast anything since Middle School. We poured an Aluminum likeness of Lincoln from a premade form and mounted it on a handmade wooden backing. I’ve been wanting to do something with my scrap brass. So now I need to make a smelter and forms and get molding sand and I can hear the wife sighing and mumbling something about another project. Oh geez.

Jimmy' s a genius and my sensei. But making brass doorknockers in petrobond id my game, and I have notes: You could get away without using a split pattern for the ring - you can tap a whole pattern half-way into the sand, make a good parting line with your fingers, dust with parting powder, then ram the top half of the sand. The pattern can be picked or tipped out. You see Indian foundrymen do it all the time on YT. Also I did not see Jimmy flux the melt, tho he might have off-camera. Brass has a lot of zinc boil off during melting and it's nice to keep it in the alloy with a flux of borax.
