I know it might be heresy for some to say that a sequel might be better than the cult classic..but yeah... It definitely stood up to the original.

I’d say the first is a more… important… movie, no question. Crazy influential and influential. But I absolutely enjoy 2049 more. Gorgeous, smart movie.

@@RocketSurgn_ True. Considering when it came out. It was a groundbreaking precursor. But if you were to make a sequel to it, I think this was the way to do it.

@@nth_to_see_hereit’s about as close to “the perfect sequel” as you can get. Manages to stand on its own (though not nearly as well as together), explores new ideas, but fits in just right. Top Gun Maverick is probably my other contender for near perfect sequel. Especially one that is made so long after the original.
@nth_to_see_here

@@RocketSurgn_ Whereas TG:Maverick is a good sequel, I feel it's designed completely differently than BR2049. Maverick relied mostly on nostalgia, shuffling around the same tropes from the original. Not saying that's bad, it was the right direction for TG and it worked. BR2049 built a lot more on top of the original, expanding the world and new ideas. And that was the right direction for it too.

@@nth_to_see_here No argument here. They are entirely different approaches to a sequel and I enjoy them for very different reasons. BR 2049 is one of my favorite movies in general, great as a movie and far more substance, while as much as I love Maverick it’s a very fun movie but not nearly as “good”. They took very different routes to follow their originals, though I’d say considering what they follow they had to. Top gun is a fun action movie first, the sequel added a lot of heart and some depth. Blade runner was more complex to start and so it’s equal had to be!

The debriefing is the updated Voight-Kamptf test from the first film to detect replicants. This time it’s to see whether he’s ‘evolving’ to be more human, and needs to be ‘retired’. There are four Official short films that were done as prequels and intro to this film. The rebellion of the Replicants. Origins of Wallace and a new scene with Dave Batista that you should see.

To me this is the most beautiful looking movie I've ever seen. Watched it several times in the cinema just so I could admire the visuals and cinematography. Roger Deakins is one of the most talented people in movie history. Every frame looks like a painting. And after 13 nominations without a win, this was one of the most deserved - maybe the most deserved - oscar ever. Denis Villeneuve...my favorite director...brilliant. This isn't some cash grab, it's not for everybody. Very slow, very focused. It wasn't a big financial success. But I love it so much. Hans Zimmer's music is of course very fitting. And Harrison Ford gives his best peformances in many many years. You can see in interviews how much he cared about this movie. He's a good actor, but sometimes it just looks like someone forced him to act in a movie. But I did not notice it here. He gives a very passionate performance. And Ryan Gosling is perfectly cast. Like I said when you reacted to Place beyond the pines. Gosling is so good at playing these silent characters that have a lot of internal emotions. It's very subtle but there's so much going on if you look closer.

I'm definitely in the camp of this being better than the first film! I love both, but 2049 is just amazing! Also, I just love Ryan Gosling. Not only can he kill it in serious roles, but his comedic timing is superb. Look no further than the masterpiece, "The Nice Guys"!

"You can't hold the tide with a broom" - what a great line. Luv is one of my favorite things about this movie. The way she died growling and snarling while she drowned was so impactful, I literally thought they killed the actress to make this movie LOL.

Just inject anything by Denis Villeneuve into my veins. Maybe my favourite auteur cause I'm a sucker for this type of gritty Sci-Fi. Gorgeous shot after gorgeous shot, thick and engrossing atmosphere. This was great film to watch in theatres. I don't recall if you have reactions for these, but some other great work from him are: Arrival Prisoners Sicario

Personally, I thought Jared Leto's acting in this was phenomenal. To be honest though, I went in prepared to love his performance because he was featured heavily in one of the short films made prior to the release of this. You should check them out, you'll also get more Batista, as well as some additional lore about what happened between the two movies. Black Out 2022, Nexus Dawn 2036, and Nowhere to Run 2048

I appreciate Blade Runner, but I love BR 2049. The performances across the board were great - even Jared - and it's kinda stunning that the original treatment for the film that the script was based on was written just a few years after the original film, by the original screenwriter... multiple people tried & failed to make this sequel. I have no idea why this film would be brought back to theaters, but if you ever get a chance to see it in IMAX, do not hesitate.

Better, in some aspects, from the original. The new one has a better script, and it is more well structured as a story, with more surprises and twists and turns. The old one had better aesthetic - '80's, music - Vangelis, villain - Rutger Hauer. Also fun fact, Niander or Neander (Neos Andras) New Man in ancient Greek (his hubris was off the charts), a billionaire with god complex.

Genuinely one of my favorite movies ever and I'm sad that it basically had the same reception as the first one on release. The first one on release wasn't reviewed that well and didn't pull much in terms of box office. Comparatively Blade Runner 2049 didn't either (if we're looking at cost to make vs revenue) Blade Runner's budget: $30 million - Box office: $41.6 million Blade Runner 2049's budget: $150-185 million - Box office: $267.5 million In both cases the movies didn't make their money back (generally you need to make double + a bit extra to start earning revenue due to all the costs of marketing and such) My hope is that Blade Runner 2049 will, like Blade Runner before it, earn cult status at some point. Because it genuinely is an amazingly shot film, a beautifully acted film, a film with some absolutely insanely good audio design and soundtrack, and an interesting and engaging story with a lot of tension and more importantly, in keeping with the original movie, philosophical questions. K, being a full on Replicant, who thought himself to be "special" due to his investigation into the natural born Replicant and believing he was him To learning it wasn't him, losing all that was dear to him and being downright in the dumps To saving Deckard, likely losing his life in the process but doing the most human thing someone can do: help another person (Helping Deckard find his daughter) Just chefs kiss Denis Villeneuve directed this one, and honestly every movie I've seen of his is amazing. If you haven't seen movies like Sicario or Enemy, I highly recommend them too

Honest to God, I don’t know why you’re not ten times more popular than you are now. I love these reactions. That said, I disagree with you that this is better than the first Blade Runner, but that’s really because of Rutger Hauer and his absolutely stunning “tears in rain” speech which was half improvised (you should check out the story Ridley Scott tells about how Rutger came to his trailer at 4AM to talk it thru). That said, this film is MORE than a worthy sequel and once again proves that Denis Villeneuve (sp?) is easily a top 3 director of our generation. He’s NEVER made a bad film. Have you seen Sicario? If not, you ABSOLUTELY would love it.

Denis Villeneuve is the man! I love his work. That being said, I get you about being able to trim a little fat. The clearest example for me isn't from this movie but from the movie Atonement (2007) with Keira Knightley, James MacAvoy, and Saoirse Ronan. It's a perfect movie, imo, except it needs to lose the final five minutes. They got Vanessa Redgrave to do it, though, so they had to give her some time and a monologue. 😐
