I love this film - it's like Hitchcock's version of a summer popcorn flick. Breezy, funny, clever, and gorgeous to look at, with just enough commentary and suspense to keep you hooked throughout.

I watched this movie for the first time during a highschool drama class, and i swear my heart dropped to my stomach and i got a full body chill when Thorwald realizes he's being watched and looks straight into the camera. Just a masterpiece

This is my favorite Hitchcock movie!!

Grace Kelly's face descending into frame to rouse a napping Jimmy Stewart is considered as one of the most arresting, beautifully filmed scenes ever captured. I love how Hitchcock withholds introducing Lisa to let Jimmy Stewart whine and waver over his life decisions to "settle down" with her while pursuing an itinerant life as a globe-trotting photojournalist. Then we see Grace Kelly gracing us with her energy, radiance and polished pronunciation. She's literally angelic hovering over him as a caring spirit, properly filmed and framed by Hitchcock. Sure she's a bluster of bourgeois melodrama, but summons the fearless moxy to follow Stewart on his initially dubious hunch -- and show us, the audience what we already knew, what Stewart's character tried to fight and deny and rationalize away: Life ain't gonna ever throw another Lisa his way; She's maxed out on beauty, poise, wit, courage and zeal. She makes other "unicorns" look like donkeys, and as he heard many times in the movie, marry this woman NOW L.B. Jeffries or forever live in idiocy! (Btw, this is Grace Kelly, the Broadway pro, the Oscar winner at her peak -- and one of the most desired women in the world. She left Hollywood behind at 26 yrs old to marry into royalty in Monaco, France, one of the most fittingly appealing locations in the world. She lived as a Princess but exhibited generosity wherever she went.)

Without claiming it to be his greatest, I want to mention that my favourite Hitchcock film is "Foreign Correspondent." It has some great moments and a great male female relationship. It also has wonderful, quirky performances by George Sanders, Herbert Marshall, and Edmund Gwenn.

Jimmy Stewart is such a naturally brilliant actor. He is consistent and always delivers. Unquestionable one of the greatest to ever do it. He's just always in the pocket!

The cherry of Thorwald's cigarette glowing in the inky black darkness of his apartment is an all timer for me. Simple and creepy in equal measure.

This was the first Hitchcock movie I ever saw, and I think it's still my favorite.

Ruth Gordon was in columbo ( try and catch me ..excellent episode). And Thelma Ritter is in rear window. Both great actresses

Thorwald a different kind of villain for Hitchcock who usually preferred slick and sinister villains, but even though he's a total sociopath he's given a certain human element of a poor soul who is so frustrated with the state of his life that he resorts to murder. He barely speaks a word throughout the whole film and when he does he sounds immeasurably desperate and even confesses immediately because he's so done with everything. So I think he's a very well drawn character despite his incompetence. Great reaction. I need to check on what other Hitchcock films you've watched on your channel. 👍

Me and my not husband yet watched this movie together when we were dating, and once we were engaged, I went online to find the most Grace Kelly dress I could find for our wedding. I found it on EBay from a woman shutting down her bridal shop for $86. It was fabulous. I had to lose 20 lbs to fit in it, but I did it. This is one our favorite movies. I just love all the characters and story. And to think that the villain was Perry Mason! Wow.

Your comment about the sound of the dialogue in older movies is exactly right. There is one contemporary director who uses similarly unrealistic-heightened speech for his characters: Quentin Tarantino. Not a surprise given what a movie buff he is. Great reaction!

I'm older and remember my dad from this generation. This IS how they talked. Things have changed greatly. At that time you couldn't have a single lady over in a place that you were renting. Just because you think the dialogue is hokie doesn't make it less accurate.

We have a theater here in Des Moines that plays older films so I first saw this on the big screen! Such a great movie 🎉thank you!

It's a great journey to be on, discovering Hitchcock movies for the first time. North by Northwest, Vertigo and Strangers On a Train are three great ones that spring to mind.

The dialogue in this is great.

The dumbest thing Thorwald did was burying something in the garden. He clearly carried the rest of the evidence away in a trunk, so why keep something nearby? 🤣🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Thorwald played by Raymond Burr would play two iconic characters. Legendary defense lawyer ‘Perry Mason’ and wheelchair-bound detective ‘Ironside’. BUT he is also famous for being the lead in what I think was the very first Godzilla movie!! He also reprised the same character in a Godzilla sequel!

You’ve got to watch Vertigo ! It’s a must watch for any Hitchcock fan ! Another good one to check out is Notorious with Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman. I think you’d really like that one too.

CLASSIC suspense! Love this one!

I loved rear window so much. I was forced to watch it in a god awful film class in college, and I expected it to suck like the rest of the movies did - but it was actually the only one from the semester I genuinely enjoyed. So naturally I rushed to the professor the next day and was like "oh my god I loved it it was so good" and he looked me straight in the eye and said "yeah but its kinda sexist isnt it?" And immediately I knew class that day was gonna be bullshit. Well, jokes on him, I dont give a fuck, I like the movie either way.

It's apparently no mere coincidence that Thorwald looks like David O. Selznick.

I love this movie. Grace Kelly was so gorgeous and that scene with the killer sitting in the dark smoking is so creepy. It would be great to see it adapted as a stage play, have the leads lit a certain way up front and then the background is constructed with scaffolding with a brick facade.

My favorite Hitchcock masterpiece! Glad you enjoyed it. Saw it in theaters once or twice; it was fun! Recommend other Hitchcock films: Strangers on a Train, Dial M for Murder, North by Northwest. Also recommend Wait Until Dark. Not directed by A Hitchcock but it might as well have been. To see the screen easier, turn off the lights or most of them during the final 9 minutes Jimmy Stewart movies to see: Mr Smith Goes to Washington, Philadelphia Story (he won an Oscar), It’s a Wonderful Life, The Stratton Story, Bend of the River, Glenn Miller Story, and Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. Grace Kelly did 11 movies only; three by Hitchcock. She married a prince in the mid 1950s and tragically was killed in a car accident in Monaco in 1982.

Have u watched Shadow of Doubt? It's my favorite Hitchcock. So good.

This is easily one of Hitchcock's best movies, which also means it's one of the greatest movies of all time, by anyone. But there's this little thing that bothers me about it... I mean, how could any man *possibly* resist Grace Kelly, no matter what she asked of him?!

Still my favorite Hitchcock movie but there are always little things that bother me like why he didn't wheel himself over to lock his door when Thorwald was on his way over or why they didn't just make a noise and scream at Thorwald when he turned the lights off and was about to most likely murder Lisa. Create attention and say "I see what you're doing over there" or anything to make him stop instead of just calling the cops and waiting. Also how he always had his curtains open and his lights on many times like when Thorwald was smoking in the dark after the dog was killed. Surely he could have seen them both watching him.

If you're staying in the black and white thriller/crime drama genre, Sorry, Wrong Number is a good one. I would bet money that your roast of those characters would be top tier lol.

I love this idea, and I love Jimmy Stewart, but this was a very underwhelming movie for me. I expected there to be more of a mystery. Like I Love Lucy did their own spoof of this idea where Lucy thinks her new neighbors are bank robbers when they were really just actors rehearsing their lines. I was expecting some kind of twist. I know it made sense for ILL since it's a comedy and this was an actual thriller so I get that the person would actually be dangerous, but by the end I couldn't shake this feeling of "that's it?" I just wanted there to be more to it. Like Jeff was just paranoid the whole time or something.
