Flowtail kites, big & small (and more)

My 1,878th kite video. There's not much flying going on in a very uncooperative New Zealand winter, but occasionally we get the chance to put some kites into the air.

Well, I certainly have a lot of them, Dewey. I'm hoping that I'll still be fit enough to do a mass fly of them when our NZ winter is over and we maybe get some better flying conditions for long enough to launch them all.

Thanks mate. Even before the vision rolled, the sawing fiddle lifted me up. Weather's been foul here on Oz's east coast, time that I went in search of a breeze again. Thanks again for the clips. ✌

Yes, it's a poor winter on both sides of the Tasman, unfortunately, but at least we haven't had the floods you guys have suffered. Good luck in finding some flying conditions soon1

The beautiful flowtails and sunny day makes me believe summer has arrived. I am going to get busy and make some fuzzy tails for my X Kite sleds.

They are certainly better with them, Carl. Summer is still a long way off, sadly. Three inches of rain here yesterday.

What an artful sky you show once again. Having several flow tails now in my collection, I've decided to add the 14' to fly with its rainbow brother...that will look awesome together. Happy flying Jim~

Flowtails , big or small are beautiful. A real joy to watch. Glad you can also appreciate the smaller X-kites, as well. They may be printed,..but I think they are good little flyers for the money.. P

Couldn't agree more, Priscilla. We've been doing a lot less flying than usual this winter as the weather has not been cooperative, but we still manage at least once a week on average, although sometimes the gap is bigger..

Gotta love the flow tails. They always look great. Hopefully I can get out this weekend. I finally finished my PLK dolphin , I can't wait to fly it.

I'll look forward to seeing some video of your dolphin in the air, Ken. I hope all goes well. My experience is that it behaves best without the line to the top fin, but experimentation is necessary.

I have to be quick. I love how you group the same flow tails on the same line. The spinner is FUN to watch with those different colors. So eye appealing. Must run; I have 4 maybe 5 red, white & blue kite videos to make this weekend. And delete some kite photos to get ready for the 7 day kite festival here. I always like to stop what I am doing to comment on your videos. Because your kite videos always make me smile :-))

The big flow tail and the stacked flow tails were steady as rocks in the sky. The sleds seemed to be bouncing around a bit even with the long fuzzy tails. Overall looked like a beautiful day to fly. Hope to post a video in a week or so of some wonderful kite flying in FAN0 2022 .... just need to edit about 5 hours of 4k video..... and a few thousand KAP images....

Big kites usually fly more steadily than small ones, as you know, and those sleds are quite tiny, really just children's kites. I've seen some footage of Fano, and it looked great, so I'll certainly keep an eye open for your video. It's hard to cut 5 hours into something that people will have the patience to watch, but I'm sure you'll keep in all the highlights.

love a flow tail display, does it make any difference if you use 2 link line's instead of 1 I only tend to use 1 link line on my stacks?

Colin, I use the two lines on flowtails that have no keel as it's very simple to do. On ones with a keel, I use just one. It's a matter of convenience really, and I don't think there's a great difference in the way they fly.

Amazing kites! Speaking of I ordered the itw rocky dawn kite for my birthday and I was wondering what kind of spool and line you recommend? I really have no idea. Thanks!

Hi Abby. I use hoop spools for all my kites, and braided dacron line. For your kite you probably need 100lb line. Have fun!

I think they're all much the same, Abby. Most of mine came from Into The Wind and from Picture Pretty Kites. As for size, 8" is good for the bigger kites but 7" is a handy size for most types of line.
