I ordered a nib and received a PEN! I'm much more interested in the nib but I unbox it, talk about the parts and features of the pen, provide some measurements, and then do a writing sample.
But mostly I'm comparing the Chinese calligraphy nib with my Lamy Cursive nib to see how they compare on my Jinhao 80.
After the writing sample, I talk about what I like and what I don't like about the pen. Please feel free to use the chapters provided below to skip to various parts of the review.

An interesting comparison, many thanks. I did think about getting one of the Lamy nibs but decided against it as my OM Lamy nib was so much of a gusher. I've ordered one of the Chinese nibs and also noted they do a Naginata style hooded nib, so I ordered one of those as well. Can't wait to see how they perform!

I have both the silver hardware and all black versions of the 80. I put a black medium Lamy nib on the all black version. It really looks stealthy, and it is medium wet and is a smooth writer. Thanks for your review showing the fun this pen affords with those additional nib options! Looking forward to resurrection Sunday. Thanks 😎👍.

I never got around to commenting on your videos, Doug, but I've been binge-watching them for the past few months. I lost a great friend who introduced me to fountain pens and going back to using them was a way of dealing with my grief. I really like your videos, including your inserts, but I end up not having much to comment on, even because I have few pens and little opportunity to get something more expensive. Today, the pen I paid the highest price for was precisely your recommendation, the Jinhao 100, which despite the different external shape, feels very similar in the hand to my first pen, a Nemosine Singularity. I'm still trying to get other Nemosine nibs to use in Jinhao, but Birmingham Pens don't ship to Brazil. But my point of commenting, in addition to having an opportunity to finally praise and thank you for the videos, is also to thank you for showing this non-naginata Nib. I made a purchase of 25 Chinese pens. Some with different #5 tip sizes that allow me to experiment with something beyond just F and XF. From 1.1mm to 2.9mm. Some pens to give away to friends who find it interesting to write again in this digital age. But the main thing for me (besides the Jinhao 100 I mentioned) are the 4 Jinhao 80 I bought, especially a white one, which I chose to receive this Non-Naginata Nib. It was the best writing experience I've ever had in my life! I have little experience I know but it was just sublime. I became interested in fountain pens because of the fine nibs (extra fine in this case) that allowed me to have much more control over my terrible handwriting derived from my adhd. But this Pen, with this nib, was a realization and a pleasure to write that I can't explain. I've written several pages with it and I just want to keep writing with it as often as possible because it's such a pleasure. So even though it was a long and boring comment, I wanted to at least write it here and thank you for it. Thank you very much.

Hi Dough... Jim from Madrid (Spain) - an expat living abroad! First of all.. I just watched both your videos (the one on the Jinhao 80 and this one) and I didn't know about either the JH 80 nor the not-Naginata Togi nib (specially with a LAMY style nib). As you know from previous comments, I not only use my Fountain Pens for writing purposes (and as EDC pens) but I use them a lot for Art purposes (Drawing, Sketching and Line and Wash with watercolors, and with non-soluable and soluable inks). I use EF-F-M-Fude nibs usually but I wanted to try a Naginata Togi type nib, both for calligraphy as well as sketching and this is a reasonably priced option to try it out. So... Thank You very much again for sharing this info!!!! And if you're ever in Spain... let me know! Cheers from Sunny Spain (though not so Sunny these days an days to come - we're having very atypical weather for this time if year!).

A little off topic, but as you mentioned waiting for your other Jinhao 80s, thought I’d share my thoughts and actions. I like the 80s, but the one thing that to me felt cheap was the surface finish… a little shinier than real macrolon and yo can see the seam. I gave all three that I have a rough up with the coarsest of my micromeh pads(vertical movements only) and they now have a much nicer feeling and looking surface finish.

I like the Chinese Calligraphy nib a lot. Well worth a try. In defense of my earlier comment on Duck Tape, I've seen it also a Duct Tape. I've been corrected both ways and I believe this is could be a manufacturer specific thing. Seems to work for me but I dry the heck out of the nib first with a Dust Blaster. I have recently received my color Jinhao 80's. Terrific pens but half of them had crap converters that did not have a seal at all at the top where the twist knob is affixed. Dribbled like crazy until I used a few spare Lamy converters which work with this pen perfectly. I keep a few extra converters of various sizes in my parts box because they have been handy in the past for other pens. I still think the Jinhao 80 is a very special pen, but I have purchased a slew of new converters just in case. I will also look into the Majohn P136. Their A1 is a great pen, I would expect this to be pretty good also. Thank you!

Interesting! Yep, the 35 is basically just a nib holder. Pretty much designed like plenty from the 1970s, it's that slim (though I do have slimmer, like my single Hero, the "360°." Kept only for the "freakish factor," not because it's an exceptional writer with truly adequate ink capacity.) But it does work for certain potentially problematic inks, so I can still use it. Sparingly. Don't have this type of nib, however. Might have to look into getting one, as I have several other pens, potentially better, it'd work in. Thanks for sharing this intriguing nib!

It is a very personal thing. Do you like to feel the nib move across the page because it gives you more control? Or are you one of those who love the glassy feel of no feedback at all. It could be a Sailor vs Pilot argument.

Very nice video! I want to find some nibs for my Hongdian/Asvine titanium forest pen. Thing is, the nib on it now is also plated with the titanium dioxide rainbow color, and if like to keep that if possible. I _think_ it's Lamy style, but I'm still new to fountain pens and I'll have to take closeup pics and compare. That calligraphy nib you received on the nib holder looked great. If it looks as though it will fit, I may get one even in plain steel, but I want something more expressive, even if it's just italic nibs, in titanium rainbow. Do you know of a source for titanium dioxide nibs in general, or is it just catch as catch can?

@@InkquiringMinds oddly enough I received both my Jinhao 80s in today's mail. I used an eyeglasses screw driver to gently push up the nib. If done with care and patience you will not mar the grip section. As a testament to cleaning your new pens, the feed started to lift with one of mine and it was caked with blue ink. A few hours later it sports a Lamy broad nib and Iroshizuku Yama Budo... While I have some concern how long this plastic is going to last, this looks like it will be a fun pen for my work bag..

I did the same thing: bought two Jinhaos and replaced the nibs with Lamy nibs - excellent combo. But at both fountain pens (EF and B), the nibs write alternately very wet and very dry, following exactly the same rhythm. If I write a page, the writing becomes exactly four times thicker (wet) and thinner (dry). Do you have any idea what the reason could be? The ink?

Very interesting comparison. I never had the Sailor Naginata Togi nib but I did have a Zoom nib which seems to have the same characteristics. It was fun to write with but not one I kept. However for the price of this non-Naginata Togi nib, I may try it again. I have never been a fan of Lamy nibs. I have a left handed nib that I never used. If you know someone who would enjoy it, let me know. I did order the P136 from Sally. I was told it will not be shipped until October. I am guessing it has a #8 nib?
