In training primarily grappling, and especially much on the ground, it is easy to get caught up focusing only on the competitive aspects in which striking is not involved. This can create some bad habits that leave you exposed for punches in many of your positions and transitions.
Bad habits can be avoided or remedied by including striking elements and considerations into your grappling training. I believe this is important even if your primary focus is competitive or sportive grappling, as it maintains your ability to handle striking situations for mma and self-defense situations.
Here are a few ideas that will help to punch-proof common positions from the ground grappling aspect.

I like how you add self defense scenarios to your videos. A lot of Jiu-Jitsu schools have gotten away from this. I'm subbed.

I like sport bjj too, but wish more school kept the self defense at the heart of it as well. Just doing my part.

Very good - we put on the gloves a lot - I especially like the angle you create from guard - we trap the same way, overhook & shin, but I’m going to work that sharp angle from the side - thanks 🙏

Wow! Very very good. I have to take a look back at your video on escaping bottom side control. Your bottom full mount and side mount defense from punches for me are completely new. I will try them. Right now I am doing standard upa escape from full mount and standard reguarding from side mount. I will try to add something new. Thanks.

I've watched a ton of jiluijitsy vids. with the sole interest in not getting punched...and this is by far the best I've seen. At what level would you as an Instructor, say that students would become proficient at these concepts. at your gym for example.

Everyone is very different and consistency is the key for everyone. As well as figuring out a sustainable training routine. I think with focus and regular training a few days a week, it’s not unreasonable to become proficient in less than a year.

That lockdown is underrated. So many dudes do it just to hold the position to prevent the top guy from passing when in reality it is supposed to be an escape or sweep from half guard bottom like how Eddie bravo always does it

I wish that in my bjj dojo or judo club one time at week we do a class with this kind of drills against strikes, and some light rolling with light strikes just to train not for competition or mma purposes, just self defense oriented and to be a more rounded grappler

Nice video EK. The first tie-up looked a little complex. Was there a reason you went for that rather than a standard dismount attempt?
@KnightJiuJitsu
@KnightJiuJitsu 5 жыл бұрын
It is a variation of elbow escape. Elbow escape is used when the opponent on top has a wider base. The standard bridging escape is better when the top opponent has a more narrow, tighter base. I just chose to show this version since I have other videos discussing the bridging version.

Man i got pinned down by somebody heavy in side and they got frustrated because I kept breaking his posture so his punches to face and body weren’t landing. He then used his strength to not only pin me but started kneeing my hamstring .. I guess I’m just asking for more on how to defend that lol
@KnightJiuJitsu
@KnightJiuJitsu 6 жыл бұрын
Kind of hard to answer without being there and seeing the specific position. One thing I would say though is focus on where the space is created when the strikes (knees in this case) are initiated. There has to be space for strikes to happen and where there is space, there is opportunity. Kind of an abstract answer, but something that helps me diagnose problems.
@skar516

Knight Jiu-Jitsu i think I was having the most problem because I wasn’t able to shrimp out due to me being pinned against the cage or properly defend the leg strikes because of that. I’m sorry I should’ve specified that
