If the first rule of martial arts is, don't be where the punch goes. Then you could effectively say, the biggest mistake in Wing Chun is the same mistake made in every form of martial arts. And that is... being where the punch lands. The second biggest mistake that is made by all forms of martial arts is the thinking. Most people who practice martial arts, will most likely use this or that to fight for sport. Or entertainment. When you realize that your enemy is not attacking you so that they can make you a cake. Then one can assert that the biggest mistake that you can make in any form of martial arts is that, you are not fighting for your life. Because there's a big difference between knocking your enemy down, and letting him get up again. And taking that individual out permanently. It is literally Straight Out of The Art of War. The 700 year old Chinese text on warfare. You fight to win. You fight to live. And you never, ever, let your enemy retreat regroup and come back stronger than before. If you're not fighting for your life. You're exercising. Hand to hand combat is exactly that. Combat. And in combat, we aren't rolling around in our underwear trying to stick our fingers in each other's butt. And if you want to know who the winner is, in a combat situation. It's easy. He's the one still breathing.

First, voiding in a fight is good and more people should understand it, but depending solely on it is a real mistake, parrying and advancing gives you a better chance against someone who has a longer reach than you. Then you can use some dodging and attack technique on them, but surrendering ground alone and saying that is the best thing to do is a stretch to say the least. Sun Tzu did not said that. He said to win everything is worth doing, but to destroy your enemy totally is a mistake, if you do so, he will probably hate you and your conquest will be worthless. If you can not fight to win, how can you jump to fight to live? The logic does not add up, you need the first to achieve the second. Sun Tzu is also much older than 700 years, much, much older. You either lied about understanding Sun Tzu or did not understood him so you are probably lying about being a combat soldier as well, or you should just put more enphasis on the "former". Hard combat elites knew throughout the ages as they know nowadays that you need competition and sparring before you can truly defend yourself in a life or death situation against another fighter. As I have pointed out. Loads of Jumbo.

@@ohshipman ... if you have destroyed your enemy completely, who is left to hate you? And thank you for calling me a liar. Because that implies that I want something from you. I was taught a far less traditional Wing Chun, and they incorporated stuff from other arts like Hsing I and Bagua. The biggest mistake I see in most Wing Chun is fighters would rather spend time trying control the opponent's hands than just get off the line of attack. All of the touch drills are meant for a split second to get the advantage and destroy the opponent.

You have people take more of a posture like Bak Mei which is interesting. Personally, where I see people make mistakes the most in Wing Chun is not valuing positioning and footwork, and trying to deflect or block everything instead of getting out of the way, covering, and closing the gap. Also a lot of lack of understanding of biomechanics for power. Doesn't matter much if you hit them if it's mostly just a poke. Just my personal opinion based on my experience.

Perfect explanation on how to train in todays time and think. 99% of the well known wing chun instructors out there are still training their students training methods that they were taught from ip mans time. They have not evolved to todays time of fighting. In fact they have stopped learning so will find it hard to cope with todays aggressive fighting attacks with their old training drills. Wing chun is a Thinking Persons Art.

Good points. Tactical Reality is what I call it. Many confrontations don’t conform to any one style and a street fighter has 3 to 5 techniques that allow them the advantage in a street fight and ultimately a KO or at least a TKO. A feign jab with a quick cross will normally take someone out unless they have plenty of time sparring for example. I like this guy’s (Sifu’s) methodology.

Ohship former sip thanks for the input and support. I think the main reason people people are being flippant (the critics, that is) is because they’re making the mistake of thinking a self-defense fight is gonna be exactly like an mma or boxing match. They won’t. A good many MMA fighters have been in street altercations and have admitted they weren’t the same thing. That said, Wing Chun is designed for a sudden encounter, not a match. That’s a significant difference that critics are unwilling to consider. My 4x4 truck isn’t a race car but I don’t need my truck to race on a track. It’s like that. Anyway, it’s folks like you we hope to reach - to educate and encourage - out there, so thanks for checking in. 🙏

You turn with the bong to redirect it and step in to counter, and you can use Tan Sau to get into the outside gate. It's honestly not that hard. But your method works too :)

Docinaplane You're right. Most martial arts only train to repond against their own style : Judo vs Judo, Karate vs Karate etc... That's because in old times, you couldn't find sparring partners from over background, and , of course, your school was supposed to be the best possible. However, a serious style is designed to makes you able to dominate agressors from other schools. That's why spying was SO important in ancient times ! Masters used to spy other school to copy their best techniques or to find how to counter them.

Even these blocks you are showing as a " better " way to deflect/block/stop that looping type straightish jab/hook...will not work in reality. Imagine a strong, powerful guy throwing one of those like a Mike Tyson would. The punch will blast right through that arm block your student is doing on you in this video. You would get clocked in the face and that might be it for you. If you are going to use such a chun-sao type arm block, the way to make it more functional is to pivot 90 degrees and block into the guy's INNER forearm at that 90 degree angle. So your body will be facing his inner forearm straight on. And when you pivot and block, you simultaneously throw your punch to his nose with your other hand. Now, another excellent defense against such a punch is a boxing head movement notably a slip or very slight bob to left OR right....doesn't matter because the punch is aiming for center...your face...so a slight bob to the left OR right, will cause the punch to miss. As you bob or slip, you are also launching an attacking punch to his now opened gate. Anyhow, good luck. FYI.
@philosopher0076

David Mack. There are guys in the street, criminals who've been in prison half their lives or more, who hit like Tyson and almost like Tyson. But no matter, even 75% of a Tyson punch would blow through the WC defense arm your student is using on you here. But guess what....using that WC arm/block/deflection...the way I described it, pivoting to face the opponent with your body, works, even against a Tyson looping jab....because you face the strongest position and stance, against the most vulnerable and weak position and angle of that attack punch. And yes, agreed WC used (as your student used it)....the standard way....is weak against longer distance attacks and long boxing punches coming in at odd angles. So then why are you using it ( having your student show it, perform it) as a defense to such a punch, in this video?

@@philosopher0076 Dude, that pivot block might work versus a strong slower punch, but faster guys that can punch three times to Tysons one and have a significant amount of power with it, will wonder what you were attempting as you pivoted into the next punch and are now on the ground. The quick head bob is better and anything that helps direct the punch away, even slightly might be enough. Footwork and pivots when you can sure. Anything that helps.
@philosopher0076
@philosopher0076 4 жыл бұрын
Stanley Myrick I said the head bob is good to do..so I don't why you even posted insofar as that goes. And as for the " faster guys" punching 3 times to Tysdon's one....doubtful as Tyson was EXTREMELY fast....not just fast for a hw...but in general. But even if the 3 to 1 scenario was true as example, Tyson would be countering simltaneous and hitting. Therefore he would smash the guy. Further, stepping in as he punched....Tyson would very likely be avoiding any 2nd or 3rd fast punch.

None of these problems are because the teacher doesn’t know or the student doesn’t get it. Its our society even in America. The government has conditioned people to think they are safe and protected by the government. Imagine if murder was legal. How would you train in your school? Like you do know or like your life depended on it?

Wing chun is a concept art, until the concepts are able to be understood it is almost worthless. If the concepts can be understood then they have to be applied, this once again is very hard. So out of 1000 people who actually learn 'proper' wing chun maybe only one of those people will be able to defend themselves against trained fighters, and that is also if they are a fighter inside. Wing chun is the hardest martial art to learn and the hardest to apply as a system. I like Wing Chun though.

In the contrary, wing Chun is a simple system. It had profound depth. And because its conceptual, people misunderstand it a lot. In my opinion. Its superior to everything. The problem is like you said. Most people suck at it and dont understand it. Out of 1000 people maybe 1 or 2 will understand it

@@sergiobatista2272 Anderson Silva & Tony Ferguson both used elements of Wing Chun that worked in the short run but was easily neutralize due to being used out of context in UFC and their opponent's were properly prepared to overcome them with the right preparation and training. However McGregor's Wing Chun (close range) shoulder strikes against "Cowboy" worked perfectly well as the element of surprise was a success was due to never being trained against such a technique for most professional fighters or opponents, yet on the streets a shoulder stike is very common. As Bruce Lee said "...to train every bit of your body..." this includes shoulder strikes. With Wing Chun being a part of Sun Tzu's strategy ... is to enter a fight only when you are sure of winning... where it is a bit late to back out when entering the cage, thefore Wing Chun doesn't belong in UFC as the option to walk away doesn't exist IMHO

I like WC. It's Excellent exercise for me. But I don't ever use any of its techniques in a actual fight. WC is just not effective. Maybe against someone who just stands there waiting to get hit. I rely on Boxing for stand up and if the fight goes to the ground (which about 80% of fights do) I rely on my BJJ and wrestling. Ain't nothing more satisfying than maneuvering some fool around into position and either make them scream like a bitch with an armbar or two or ground and pound their face in.

The big mistake Wing Chun people make is that they don't trust their own system. If u afraid to get hit you will get hit. Wing Chun fight ting style is walking like a robot. It is boring and simple. If u a duck, u should walk like a duck. Wing Chun don't block. It is too slow too block. A boxer boxes when step into a gym. All he does is boxing. He punch a hundred times, a thousand times. Therefore his skill is more efficient than most Wing Chun pratictioners. Wing Chun focus on forms and especially Chi Sao. Is he using his Chi Sao in figting? When the fight starts; his stance is great...then he starts blocking, which is against Wing Chun concept. Then he a starts moving his head a way from the punch. His stance changes to a boxer or a kick boxer. He or start to move his hands up or down like a Tai Chi practictioner; looks cool and fancy. On top of that he starts to shuffle like a boxer. If u are a duck why don't u walk like a duck? U are a duck; but u try to fly like a butterfy. Wham in the face; he lost his stance, his belief in the system. I am not a Wing Chun practictioner, but I started to adopt the tecnique into my fighting style due to my old age. Wing Chun is a Good combat system if you practice it right and belief in the system. Chi Sao looks cool but it does not do u any good in real combat. Jame Sin Clair is one great Wing chun pratictioner in a UK. Center line, blocking is too slow, intercepting or hitting while blocking is some of the great concepts of Wing Chun. If u want wing chun into real combat, then ask, "What does a boxer do in the gym?" Sorry for my bad English. Hope this help some new comer who plan to try Wing Chun. Any style is good if u master its tools and concepts.

Until you spar with a resisting opponent you have not prepared for a fight. Until wing chun starts training like a combat sport: boxing, muay thai, wrestling, bjj etc. it will be relegated to the world of theory. A guy boxing for a year will beat any wing chun guy who's done nothing but do drills and forms for 10 years.

So its apparent you never set foot in a wing chun school. Wing Chun has it's own set of training. There is sparring. It is just done witha different approach, but that isnt until way later until you have a pretty good understanding of the system. You dont need martial arts to fight.

If you are learning any martial arts and not sparring then you are not really learning for real life situations and that's the problem. A lot of people learn martial arts with never ever actually fighting. Wing Chun for instance has a lot of base principles that make a lot of sense and are simple and efficient but a lot of martial times fighting is never really part of the learning process and learning to fight and fighting are completely different. It's like how you go to school and then get a job and realize that you actually know nothing 😂
