You rock Mark ! I'm pretty you'll pass the JLPTN3. I'm studying Japanese as well and plan to pass the N4 next year. Your videos inspire me and help me to motivated. So, thank you !

Thank you! I'm glad someone has hope for me hahaha. I'm super glad the videos help! The N4 is tricky as it more or less introduces passative, causative, and a lot of honorifics... but you'll get a handle on it in no time. Keep up the work, and progress will show up when you don't expect it to!

Pass that test and let's go chill in Japan! Book collection seems like it's coming along nicely haha Leveling up is no joke. I thought I was N4 level since I knew most of the N5 stuff until I actually started the deck and boy was that a mental setback (or reset of expectations?)

I think "a reset of expectations" is a good way to put it! We think we know everything... and then we realize we're just at the start. That's me with N3 listening right now... blah. Japan one day it is 😤

No need to rush dude, just try to enjoy the process! I've finally made it to an IT job in japan and am struggling everyday just to get by... I like to use the voice rooms on hello talk for speaking practice so if I were to suggest anything it would probably be that. Also if you like reading I suggest you read non fiction stuff about your hobby of choise, it's alot easier to understand when it's something you already know. Also non-fiction in general is usually easier to understand in general. Anyways, good luck!

At the moment, rushing is part of the process haha. The JLPT cram is pretty much to rush myself through to have a foundation of things and a curriculum to go by and then whether I pass or fail I'll work on encouraging myself to watch TV in japanese, read in japanese, interact in Japanese discord servers, etc. Hello talk duly noted. I have joined a community and have a friend who speak japanese... I'm hoping that production will force my recall ability to improve haha. The book of folk tales and the other book of misc essays I got has been super helpful. Having the kanji recognition has been going a long way for reading. Nonetheless, the best process has to be in the country itself. My goal at the moment is fundamentally different (exam vs. production) and hopefully none of this comes across as conflating the two this time (as I sort of did with studying grammar vs. practicing reading). I may be able to read and recognize words, but production not being tested on the exam is a weak point I will be revisiting once the exam is over haha. FWIW I think the struggle will yield great results (and I'm sure it has already) and it'll keep coming in random realizations. If it was an easy thing to do, everyone would be doing it. Keep it up, and thanks for stopping by the vid! Been a while for these learning logs 🔥

Great video Mark! I was able to follow I and I understand where you are coming from! I really enjoy having these conversations. Personally Im always curious to see how other people studying! RTK can very a dull and drawn out process. It took me 6 months of study to finish RTK. I did quit twice mind you XD! ( Wani Kani was not out / not fully functional when I started RTK it dit come out a few months after! ). I used a anki to learn the kanji from RTK. Front of the card was English Keyword(Kanji meaning ) It was my job write the kanji form the English keyword. I pretty much learn how to write. (I have lost a lot of this now because I start writing less and typing more )Setting up Anki was not too bad but it can be a huge time suck. I have fallen into the trap of spending to much time in anki instead of immersing. Wani Kani is WAY more beginner friendly and less up ramp time this allows its users to not worry about everything all at once. If I could do it again I probably would pick Wani Kani at least to learn Kanji. I have a few gripes. Wani Kani forces you to learn all of the vocab before moving on the next lesson. I understand that is in place to prevent burnout/ overwhelm and to reinforce the kanji that you learning. But what if I know this word or this word is of no importance/ interest to me. Wani Kani does not allow you to skip those words. It forces you to stay on their learn path (I hear it takes 2 years to finish). Which Im personally not a fan of because I have my own method of learning vocab. SideNote: I am aware of the community scripts that allow more customization but that can be a hassle keep up when a scripts stops write when there is a new update to wani kani. Although I dont think updates happen often. I really did not mind that RTK did not teach me the Japanese reading. I learned most of that through context. Right after I finished RTK I allowed my reviews to die down then I started going through the genki text book. (Here is where I think the magic of RTK comes in!! BTW this is my opinion and so take it with a grain of salt XD) Because I could recognize most of the the kanji in Genki 1 and Genki 2(I say most because I am human and not perfect) I was able to quickly learn the grammar in those books and move on to real content books, manga video games. I added a few sentences that I liked from genki 1 + 2 into anki and study that everyday. What help me remember and retain that grammar from was immersion. I would try and immersion when I had the free time. I didn't track it so I can't give you any numbers. I would watch shows that I have ready saw in English dub just in Japanese. DBZ, Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, etc. Since I new the story I would try and focus what was being said. When I would recognize some of the grammar patterns that I learn in the textbooks come up in shows I was watching it was like RUSH of dopamine hit my brain! This made me want to immersion. I did start to branch out to new shows and some were way to hard and my comprehension suffered but that is comprehensible input comes into play. steven krashen has a lot of information on the subject! Again great video!! If you made it this far thank you!

Regarding Anki, yea I just use premade decks online haha. I'm pausing WaniKani soon because I want to focus my time on just N3/JLPT vocab. Some of the prep books require writing out hiragana/kanji so it's definitely forcing me to remember them a little more closely! WaniKani is definitely a paced platform. I like it because it's just something where it won't overwhelm you or anything, however you can get words wrong constantly and then proceed beyond them. It's kanji that you have to get down- and imo those are always useful. If you have a goal, such as I do, I think Anki is better and WaniKani just isn't the tool for that. However, after the exam, I don't want to be learning 68 words a day / spending 2 hours just on vocab a day, so WaniKani's own pace is good for me. If you do it "right" and intensively, you can do hundreds of reviews a day and get levels done about 1 a week. Not that I recommend it or do it myself, but it is just one too lof many. Sentences! Sentences is a big one. I realize that I wish the anki deck I used had sentences for the context of various words, but alas. I'll have to get those out of books. I wish WaniKani highlighted the example sentences a little more clearly when you completed a word but you can always go looking when you need i.t It's a great feeling recognizing words and such in TV! It's awesome! I can listen/watch Japanese media and, while I may not get a lot of the meaning (also not perfect!) it doesn't sound like random mumbo jumbo- and that's a great feeling. I have mixed opinions on Krashen and such, but definitely a good place to start. I think he's got some good tidbits, but at the end of the day... work hard, study smart, and have fun! Thanks for dropping such a thoughtful comment, I do appreciate it! I'm super glad you enjoyed the video! :D

Hey just to clarify, how long has it been since you did your N5? Seems like you've progressed super fast, cool to see. Should try and get in as much native youtube/podcasts as possible imo, it makes listening to simpler/different things like anime a lot easier.
@markbacon78
@markbacon78 Жыл бұрын
I passed an online mock exam in July of this year, so it's been about 3 or so full months... which leaves one/two for the N3... (started N3 words and grammar in October, though if you go from me having passed the N4 two days ago...) I've got some native podcasts and youtube on lock, I'm terrible at getting myself to listen to them actively. The perspective of making simpler things (i.e. anime) easier is one I hadn't considered honestly, hmm. I consume a lot of media (unfortunately) so I should adopt the habit of making it Japanese ahead of time.

You know people don't need as much water as it is suggested right?
@markbacon78
@markbacon78 Жыл бұрын
That doesn't mean hydration isn't important. Plus, depends on how much you define "need". People only "need" to drink a certain amount to... stay alive? stay healthy? not pass out if it's 102 degrees F outside? I'm on keto and drink too much caffeine -> wombo combo for lack of water retention, so I drink like 3L a day minimum. I've found my water consumption correlates with how I feel, physically and mentally. Correlation not causation of course, but I think people need to drink more water. Hydrate, my friend! You may not "need" 8 glasses a day and can get by on 1, but it's called "recommended"/"suggested" for a reason. Give it a shot, keep a big water bottle by your desk. If you're lucky enough to have fresh water at a moment's notice, take advantage of it.

how old r y ? and why r u learning japanese ?
@markbacon78
@markbacon78 Жыл бұрын
Not sure why the age is particularly relevant, but I graduated from undergrad in December 2021. I started learning because I was supposed to go to Japan to teach English in the summer of 2020, but due to COVID that never happened. Once we found out we weren't going, I stopped studying. However, I studied linguistics and wanted to get back into language learning so I figured I'd jump into Japanese for whatever reason since it was on my mind. And thus... I've just kinda stuck with it. Second language acquisition is a fascinating endeavor and it's fun to have a challenging thing to work on. I hope you enjoyed the vid!

actually I have a reason for asking about your age , based on , u seem very younger , also for curiosity ,to be honest I'm from the middle east and learning English right now , it takes me 3 years , but now with slowly progress, with 24 y, what why I 'm thinking do I too late in 2022 learning English ? , because I need to learn another language when I really know ,I finally obtained English , very obsessed in English, but very slowly progress, very struggling , 3 yr not easy . Thank you

Language learning is not easy, but worth it! It's never too late. At 24, it certainly isn't too late to learn English. I'm around your age and learning Japanese, and I want to learn languages forever- next up is Brazilian Portuguese! It's not easy. If it was easy, everyone would do it. Honestly, your comments here are pretty good English! Keep going. Watch english youtube, media, read english books, and also learn grammar and such. Progress happens over long times, you do not see it happen in a day. Keep up the good work. In a 3 (more) years, you will thank yourself :)
