The last 2 years I have been purchasing quite a few athearn genesis locomotives. I have not been disappointed in any of them. I will be adding more to my collection!

It's cool it has the low speed diesel and as you increase power the turbine comes to play.

Nice loco and review James ! It has the same appearance as my DDA40X from Athearn Genesis also with Tsunami 2 Sound but they are very different in Sound and trucks. This one looks like a BoBoBoBo where the DDA40X has a DoDo (4 axles per truck) wheel arrangement with each truck driven by a separate motor. And there is no tender with the DDA40X. I just bought the E6 Atlantic from BLI so I better slow down right now 😃Happy Christmas and New Year to you !

This is a beautiful model. I own the MTH GTEL ones and a custom OMI brass super turbine, which I personally like the most, but I love anything train related that contains the word turbine, nonetheless!

Hi cool UP Ho Gas Turbine how long is your UP Ho Gas Turbine? Without the tenders I saw your other video of the UP Ho Gas Turbine. The one with the six axle engine. What are length's of the two from the nose of the engines. To the rear of the engines. from the nose

Back in the late 60's My Mom ran a Cafe About 100 yards from the UP Depot in Sidney Nebraska. These Turbines (Blows as the Railroad crews called them) would stop and change engine crews right at the Depot. I would watch the crew change and Listen to the noise while washing dishes. The noise of these Blows was deafening even at idle. I guess California out lawed them for this reason. Lots of memories!

Glad that you are getting into the turbines! They are one of the most interesting types of motive power and seemed well ahead their time! Imagine what they would be like with their horsepower ratings, if they had AC traction motors in those days (obviously, along with the necessary computational support). We might as well throw in some AI while we are at it. I don't know if you realized the microphone issue after this video was made, but if you made the video after responding to my earlier comment about the background noise overwhelming your voice... then you still are, extremely hard to hear (as other viewers have noted)! Did you happen to check the weight on this model and how many axles or trucks are powered and which ones? Lastly, how many traction tires (if any) does the engine have... and would I be right in assuming that it has only got one motor? Thanks in advance for your addressing all of this and wish you the best throughout the holidays! Thanks for your quick response 'JLWii2000... and the other questions that I asked about with regard to the number of powered axles, the presence of and number of traction tires, and whether all of the trucks are powered... can have a huge impact on the performance of the locomotives...and is not something that is readily visible, to the viewer, as is true in the case of determining the weights of the locomotives. These observations also provide clues as to the efficiency and durability of the various models and their power trains (or transmissions) when compared to other manufacturers. The best example of what I am getting at might be the performance review of the Trix PA passenger locomotives by Model Railroader a number of years ago. It was pointed out that each unit only had 2 traction tire equipped powered axles per unit and yet they somehow managed to develop the highest tractive effort numbers of any HO scale locomotive that they had ever tested! The pair of units that I had were destroyed by our cat, who had gotten on the test track and decided to get into a fight with another cat through the window, that see saw walking by outside on our pool deck. Just some thoughts for you to consider, if you will... even though you pretty much, are already at the top of your class! Take care and again, hope you all have a safe, healthy and happy holidays!

You sir are an interesting person! To begin with, I have the older Athearn RTR “veranda” turbine model and my Conure parrot decided to redecorate the tender top grating and hand rails with her beak! It was an expensive lesson for being a new bird owner (we adopted her when her owner passed away). I love turbine units, U50’s and Mallet type steam engines. It’s interesting on what you described about the traction power from minimal drive wheels, I wonder if the model was designed that way to apply maximum weight focus on that axle as per the prototype? The first run version of this model runs great on the club layout and it’s a high quality layout so I’m not sure how it would respond to lower quality track. I can say that the first run Scale Trains “Big Blow” turbine did have problems with the lead truck commonly picking switch points or derailing in turns if track elevation wasn’t just right. I was able to remedy this pretty easily so it’s no longer an issue but I know Scale Trains had to do quite a bit of repairs but subsequent production runs ironed the issue out. I suppose that is good advice for anyone looking to buy a used “Big Blow” that’s an earlier run to find out if it was repaired or not before buying it. I notice some of our club members running long trains with their locomotives and despite the weight and an added traction tire, it makes little to no difference but I can say that the Veranda turbine has 4 powered axles pulling the engine as the other trucks (both lead and last trucks) are not carrying any weight onto the rails, they’re kept in contact with the rails via a light spring pushing the non-powered trucks onto the rails just hard enough to keep them in contact so they won’t pick through switch points or derail on uneven connections. I also advise a little caution when lifting the model as the front and rear trucks can eventually be damaged since they dangle when picked up so what I do is secure both sides of the model at the front and rear trucks then lift the model, the power pick up wires are very delicate as well. Would be great if someone put out a model of the coal burning turbine that UP experimented with, what a beast!

I am just seeing your reply. Thank you for your response and kind words. The information and performance parameters are what usually determine whether or not I decide to get the model in question, not unlike the real world railroads. Nothing like getting getting a super power articulated or turbine locomotive that can be out pulled by a 4-6-2 or 4-8-4 BLM! That's one of the reasons that JLW is sitting at the top of the pyramid... along with his response to questions and apparently everything else he does in his life!
