We're back with another episode of Great Moments in Fighting Game History! Today we are covering the greatest Evolution grand finals of all time (in my opinion!) Evo 2009, Street Fighter 4 finals, between Daigo Umehara and Justin Wong! We'll be breaking down the history between these 2 players, the characters they're picking, and the strategies and adaptations that take place between Daigo's Ryu and Jwong's Rufus, Abel, and Balrog.
Make sure to subscribe to Justin Wong on KZfaq: / @jwonggg

In those days, Justin's talent was his mastery of multiple complex characters, able to swap them as needed to fit the opponent and situation, and use them more proficiently than other pros with their mains. But Daigo's talent was his grandmastery of one simple character, and could make that lone character feel like multiple complex opponents in the same match.

and it is interesting to see that 20 years after moment 37, Daigo start to enjoy all sorts of characters when doing SF6 online, Justin however stay with Chun-Li all the way to every tournament he joins, the most insane part is both of them are still top tier player, normally you don't get to be that good for that long, I guess these two just build a little differently with others. 😂

Damn, Justin really put those stars and stripes on and tried his heart out to bring it home for America, but the beast stayed unbeatable. This is a match I've heard about but never given much thought but when you lay out the history and play out the drama like this beat by beat it ascends the match to new heights for all of us folks who weren't there to experience it live. I am one of those who never understood how video games could be considered a sport. I like sports, and I played fighting games like street fighter casually in arcades when I was young. But I had no idea how technical the games I played could be. Your explanations of what’s going on go a long way in helping me have such a good time with these videos and recognizing that yeah, games can be just as intense and technical as any sport. This match had me on the edge of my seat.

Watching this in anticipation of EVO2022 in a couple hours, but... Justin going to Balrog felt like the REAL "USA vs Japan" match had begun. You could feel it in the air of the crowd with their "USA" chants in tow as Justin literally puts an entire country on his back. The symbolism of such a sight is one of the things that makes this EVO GF incredibly memorable. Even to this day, America had not won SF4 on the world stage of EVO. They haven't done it for SF5... yet (go iDom!). In fact, the last time USA took home 1st place in Street Fighter... was over 10 years ago. you miss one vital part of the analysis, the mental stack. After Justin reset the bracket, Daigo starts cooking for real and displays just exactly why he's the champion and you can see how he's caught offguard by daigos sudden agressiveness. Daigo hardly ever cracks during a tournament, if he does, then he has an amazing ability to conceal his emotional state in his gameplay..

I think people sometimes forget Daigo's career logevity. His peers like Valle, Watson, and the likes aren't competitive anymore but he is still a fixture at the CPT. The only one like him is Sako.

I like Sako even more than Daigo, and I LOVE both. Daigo will go cheap if he's decided he wants to win above all (broken Evil Ryu in Ultra IV, ultra broken Yun in Arcade Edition), whereas I feel Sako is more "pure" in that he appears to play mainly to amuse himself and to entertain. That being said, when Daigo is competitive in a Street Fighter game, he elevates the meta and the yomi to the absolute maximum. As much as I hated Evil Ryu in Ultra IV, even Sako, who essentially developed the tech for the character (and way before Evil Ryu was even on anyone's radar as a viable option) said Daigo took the character to a level that even Sako couldn't imagine, or deal with. After Daigo had mastered Evil Ryu, Sako barely touched the character again, because he said it was pointless. Two absolute immortal legends for completely different reasons.

The rival of every top US player was Daigo. Even Tokido's rival was Daigo. Nobody will ever dominate for so long across so many eras as Daigo did.

@@TheEvilCheesecake Never say never. For me, however, Daigo's contribution to the FGC goes beyond what he's accomplished as a player. He's essentially shown that being a career competitive fighting player is a thing, and for that the Tokidos etc. can never thank him enough.

Fantastic insights, and thanks for the backstory! I had just watched the raw Justin versus Daigo video of this yesterday, so this was a cool follow up to that.

Those opening shots of Justin stunting for the camera for the "poised thinking" before his match with Diago gave me douche chills. Whack
