Lalah is a vocal beast. I fell in love with her version of this song years ago when she sang this on BET’s Celebration of Gospel. Her voice on this song is like melted butter and warm syrup. Thank you for this!!! And yesss, contraltos and mezzos!! So underappreciated in this industry basically crowded with sopranos (shout-out to baritones and basses too who don't get much spotlight). I actually listened to Lalah's debut album yesterday and her approach and her voice sounded pretty different. It was definitely higher. I think asides from the obvious maturing in her voice she also sings pretty diffferently from how she did back then. Definitely that lower larynx sound.

She is quality, smooth tone. She knows when to do certain vocal runs with taste. Many singers now days try to show how high they can sing, too many riffs meaning over singing. Many may have range and vocal riffs . Having an athletic voice and being a singer is two different things. Lala is a pure singer. This is coming from a pure singer.

I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS! You are right on point, a true musician and student of the art. You are absolutely right when you compared her to her legendary father Donnie Hathaway. The approach she takes is like she is caressing each sound she produces words or trills or runs...she doesn't ever over do and she can hit a lowest low, and her highest high makes the listener anticipate where she's going to take the song, whatever the tempo, whether it is a cover or an original piece. You get to hear glimpses of her father, while staying true to Laylah. I was a little girl when her father died, but my mother played his music during my childhood and I always loved has an artist. Then when she hit the scene, as a new artist, her performances were already polished and professional and if I am not mistaken she is classically trained and I also later studied her father's music and learned how much of a musical genious he was. So I think that not only was she born with her gift, blessed by God, she's a student of her father's musical accomplishments and knew she would do this. What a way to honor her father's memory and establish her own musical legacy!

Heyyy J my man. I was one of the ones recommending Lalah. Thanks so much. I love her and her instrument. Thanks. Please consider doing a verses where they all win Crooners Gregory Porter vs Will Downing Donnie (Colored Section not Hathaway) vs Rahsaan Patterson Maxwell.vs Eric Benet Again everyone wins. All are fantastic singers and showman. Thanks for what you do man. Keep it up. Loving the lessons.
