Tiles in a kitchen is a bit 90's, atleast in the Netherlands and Austria. Also a lot of house, especially new ones use PVC flooring since it's very effective to let the floor heat through.

Well, actually we don't often pour concrete floors... it's much more common to use prefabricated slabs and just fill in the cracks. We also don't do floor heating within concrete. It's usually put into a layer of screed we put on top of the concrete. The screed will detach the flooring from the concrete and avoid cracking of tiles etc. While I love wood flooring I wouldn't recommend it if you have floor heating. It insulated quite well and heating takes a lot of time. So in the children rooms you can do something like cork flooring, which is quite nice for children, but in the rest I would actually use tiles or vinyl flooring because of less thermal insulation.

@@Xboxers well it depends. Tiles have had quite a comeback with those very large tiles and natural stone ones. So black natural stones like slate are quite nice and definitely trendy right now. But I prefer the simplicity of PVC. You can just replace individual pieces and it's simply glued to the ground like carpeted floor.

My thoughts exactly. Seems more interesting than watching a wood frame house being built. I live in a concrete house, but not built like this one. Our house doesnt have insulation on the walls and was made / built in the early 1950's. I am not sure if it is a pre-fab house, but all outer walls are concrete. Concrete floor downstairs and wood beams / joists and floorboards upstairs.

Concrete gets weaker with higher water to cement ratios. Self leveling is never good for structural slabs.

It's fascinating how this concept has migrated into home construction. I saw an article on this 20 yrs ago but, at the time, it was only used in commercial/industrial applications. I thought then that, it would be a great way to build a home, utilizing this material.

were they like this one? everything is a little overkill on this one. the span is 22ft to the inside of the walls, 24 to the outside. did it have all this rebar?

@@jmuller86 Ours was with prefab slabs hoisted in place. Lower floor with thick styrofoam below and rough floor with space for addional concrete with embedded floor heating. Did not see the rebar, Upper floor 3 inch concrete with rebar halfway in and ontop sticking out, prefab panels. Don't know if they put additional rebar in. Total thickness in the end around 8 inches. Builder stated it was a design not tested before. Later on I did see a lot of multistory apartments and a lot them had an U-profile on top of their non-load bearing dividings walls. I suspect they hide free space there in that profile in order to allow bowing of the floors. Most likely your design is a bit more sturdy, But in general I recommend to put up some cheap wall texturing and not that expensive stuff we did plaster our walls with. Over here in Holland you are playing safe if you wait 3 to 5 years in order to let the building settle and avoid the need to plaster once more. Sorry for being not very specific, but our county lost the detailed building specs when I wanted to check them.
