I came up with a similar contraption several years ago but without the plunger. I just got into the box and jumped up and down on it. Glad my neighbors never could see me. My wife thought I was completely out of my mind (and I probably am)

This is perfect :) i don't have hay, but the weeds in my backyard are a pain to bag. this will make things a lot easier. Of course i might have to jerryrig something like this from whatever is back there. Thanks for this!

I think that is a great video. I have just been hand baling too with my 'wheely bin system'. You can see it on my you tube channel. You take care with that big lever as you sit over it and tie off....That hay can be kinda springy! Great work mate

I was just in Creed Colorado and they had a similar device from the 1800's Wish I had taken a picture to share with you. If you can call the museum, maybe they can send you a picture. Theirs was made out of heavy timbers and had a gear reduced ratchet and chain for compression.

Cool stuff man! Thanks for sharing! I have a suggestion for you if you don't mind. Take a piece of rope and attach it to the back(your upright for your plunger) and then bring it under the baler to the middle of the front. Tie a loop in the proper position so when the baler is full you can let the rope hold the plunger down while you tie the twine. You could also use a chain.

Very functional. Never seen one before. I made something similar for packing straw tighter to shoot arrows into.I'll have to use this idea next time. Now you have to go get your detector to find that knife you threw down?

Lovely contraption, it just needs a better door. I wanna build myself one, I've got a very old Claas baler but it broke down and I'm currently storing loose hay which takes too much room in the barn. Thanks for sharing, buddy.
@farmerboybill8 жыл бұрын
+Federico Alinovi I was talking with an older neighbor that was a young man when farmers went from storing hay loose to baling. He said he saw an awful lot of guys who emptied out their barns to run the hay through a baler. They stacked the bales back into the same mow, and the hay took up the same amount of space! He claims packing loose hay into the mow will take up the same space as hay bales.... It sounds unbelievable, but haven't known him to be wrong very often. Bales are more conveient, though.

Great idea. What do you use to cut the grass? I think my mower might chop up the stalks too much....

@carpentersrestsawmill20758 жыл бұрын
We used to bale tobacco in a similar contraption. Ours was horizontal, and we used an air compressor to force the crop down in the baler. It was home made also, and produced a good tight bale. It actually was pretty quick once you got the hang of it. If you had a place in your barn with electric, I would just bring in a trailer load of hay and start bailing!! Might take a while, but what the hey??? or did I say hay??? ERRRRR

I use long cut its cut with a sickle bar. I dont know if the clippings would work because they prob wouldnt stay together. Unless you made some kind odf small baler amd made it real tight.
@dennism55658 жыл бұрын
Great idea. The last part of the tie off of the bale, however, looked like it could do a damage to one's jewels, if you know what I mean?

Great way to get baled hay out of areas that otherwise the grass would go to waste, Hay at $5./bale out of the field where Iive. That would return $30/hr savings and no tax. A dollar saved is $1.25 earned. Thanks for posting the video.

I like it! Kinda reminds me of some of the contraptions you see in an "Our Gang Comedies" movie but I think Buckwheat and Alfalfa would have a hard time topping this one. The best part is it works! Terry

Just an idea, why not place the baler under garage electric door. All you have to do is switch the door up/down then bundle it.
