"The key thing to understand is that this attack on Jews is also an attack and an assault on America and on the West."
Anyone honestly looking at the rise of antisemitism on campus and in major cities in the US is worried about the future of American Jewry. Are we witnessing the end of the golden era of Jews in America? Is there a path forward where Jews can once again feel safe?
To discuss this, JNS editor-in-chief Jonathan Tobin is joined by TIkvah Fund Executive Director Eric Cohen who posits for American Jewry to thrive there needs to be a "second exodus" from so-called higher institutions and a paradigm shift in who we consider our allies.
For anyone concerned about the future of American Jewry, this is a conversation you don't want to miss!

I've always wondered why a large amount of Jews stayed in Germany while a few left. Why didn't they all leave? Someone explained it to me...they were comfortable. I see that happening to Jews in America. The antisemitism is NOT going away. Sure, there's a lot of fighting from other countries in Israel, BUT in Israel, you'll be supported for being a Jew. I support and pray for Israel.

Jews stayed in Germany for a number of reasons including the fact that they were not allowed to take any money with them -- their bank accounts were frozen; they couldn't get visas from any country; they believed the Nazi movement would not succeed, they felt German.

The first ideia is incorrect. Most German Jews left. The fact is germany invaded other countries and started the holocaust all over Europe. In Poland, 9 out of 10 Jews were killed. In Europe, 2 out of three. They weren't germans.

Two thirds of the Jews of Germany left in the 1930s. You can look it up. Many of those who remained did so to take care of elderly relatives, or had health problems, or couldn't find a place that would take them in. But by the time the war began, two-thirds had left. Some went to other countries in Europe and later got caught in those countries when Germany conquered them. This was the case for Anne Frank's family, for example. They had left Germany when Anne was very small.

Even though one woman youtuber, who I got tired of listening to even if she is kind of pretty, suggested that Israelis had it really good because of free health care and free education, it is very expenisve to live there that some Isarelis a few years ago movied back to germany, primarily Berline. Germans at least aknowledge4d what horrible things they did, compared to the Japanese, who are always complaining abouty the atomic bomb dropped on them twice, but don't seem to care about what horrors they did to other people. Even to this day, germany goes after small time clerks at the time of the war, now many intheir 90;s. I even know of two German people who worked in a Kibutz in Isarel.

@Jekvan 19 күн бұрын
Well man, this is the worst argument as it can come. A good chunk of Jewish last names indicate the places where their family used to live at some point-toponyms. And then, to be fair, Arabs with those last names where in palestine well before any jew with Frank or Berg last name sat his foot there. So if you want to use this argument, it's very easy to find yourself fast on the other side of the loosing battle. Please, there are not much of us, and we have to be in the tip top shape in everything, sharp in arguments as well. There are enough people who can disassemble any word or debate and then use it against us. Try better.

All I said is, and I will repeat it several times so it will go over your tuhes hurtness: The argument this dude above me said is a very mute argument. If he would use it in a debate?he will be obliterated, and that would be another reason for other side to chuckle and say that we evil supremacists or whatever. I mean, really? Arabs didn't live there centuries before a Jewish foot step in Israel? And the fact that they didn't call themselves Palestinians or Petruvians or whatever, is a reason people can't have self determination? Try again, this time better. And I said, that in the time, that each and every one of us have to be on top of their game, know history and knowing how to debate, this is simply unacceptable. You want me to copy paste this to you, as I said? Maybe it will come inside after the third time? I'm just very angry that people can't get on top of their game. It’s going to be a tough challenge. I’m a Jewish woman approaching age 70. I transitioned away from the progressive left a few years ago. But I see most of my liberal friends and family being unaware of the changes that represent the party they and their parents always belonged to. It’s hard for them to let go, especially if it means supporting the right. I agree that building new, more welcoming universities is the way to go. But I just wonder if people can let go of the idea that universities, like Harvard and Yale, are now openly against us.

In 1920's and 1930's Germany, some Jewish people said that they were no longer Jews but "we're Germans now". There is a time to leave a hostile country. And if America continues down the current path with a hostile WH, the time might come for you to get your affairs in order and go to Israel for the safety of yourselves and your families. As a Jewish American Israeli living in the US, the barbaric October 7th massacre slapped me hard into the reality of a simmering Anti-Semitism that has always been here, awakened by the muslims who were ALLOWED to infiltrate the US for this express purpose, in addition to taking down America which they are doing simultaneously. People I know, including Jews, don't understand the seriousness of the problem, increased by the years of intentional broken borders bringing in criminals and army age single men who are being dispersed throughout the "great" US of A to bring chaos and harm to those looking away from their new reality. I feel safer in Israel, however dire the situation there, because in Israel we know the enemy. We will survive and win our extstential fight for survival. As for the US, I don't have high hopes. While I appreciate your good ideas for American Jews, you are ignoring the big picture, taking into consideration other factors. And don't get me started on all of the Jewish organizations who have claimed for years that they are fighting Jew hate, yet have done nothing except take money, and for who knows what. Anti-Semitism is only growing because people who support Israel do so silently. Silence is acquiesence. This IS a repeat of Nazi Germany, only louder and incredibly far wider.

It's unlikely that the Jewish professors of the Frankfurt School who introduced toxic critical theory into American universities considered that it might one day backfire on their own people. Along with the promotion of "multiculturalism," it was likely never thought of as a potential danger to Jews themselves., unfortunately. The more limited goal was merely undermining a body politic's essential foundations along with the predominant ethnicity which constituted it.

As was known during the founding people, "“May the same wonder-working Deity who long since delivering the Hebrews from their Egyptian oppressors, planted them in the promised land - whose providential agency has lately been conspicuous in establishing these United States as an independent nation - still continue to water them with the dews of Heaven and to make the inhabitants of every denomination participate in the temporal and spiritual blessing of that people whose God is Jehovah.” - 1789, Letter to Congregation Mikve Israel (Savannah, Georgia)" ~ George Washington The book of Genesis makes it clear, "12 The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. 2 “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.[a] 3 I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” "

Not only have the Jews been a great addition to American culture. Persia, under Cyrus the great saw the exceptional strengths and talents of the Jewish people, so Cyrus sent them back to re-establish their own nation, specially the temple, the center of Jewish religious life. Islam is an invasive, foreign, religious ideology in Persia established at the point of a sword.

I'm not Jewish, but I am 100% pro-Israel, and I agree totally with everything discussed in this talk. Also, I'm a supporter of RFK Jr. In random order, here's some of my reasons for supporting RFK Jr... -genuinely wants to heal the 'culture war' divide in our country, and he has the ability to, being liked by many different 'types' of people from across the spectrum of issues and ideas, who are tired of the 2-party duopoly -has integrity, has courage, truth seeker in general, thinks for himself (not a DNC/RNC puppet) -not phony -incorruptible, cannot be bought or bullied -thoughtful and introspective, deeply considers problems and possible solutions -vocal about the corruption of 'Citizens United' and the power of the big private money controlling government -vocal about putting an end to corporate capture over government (Pharma, banks, oil, big ag, military industrial complex) -wants to get us out of 'forever wars' and to pull back on and expose the corruption within the military industrial complex -wants to pull back NATO and resolve the Ukraine problem via negotiations -vocal about the dishonesty and agendas of commercial media -wants to abolish all pharmaceutical advertisements on television (this has major influence on the 'news' narratives) -wants to keep the pharmaceutical industry honest with safety testing, transparency, etc -wants to get rid of government assist crony capitalism and subsidies for big ag, oil, etc -advocate for civil liberties -vocally against censorship (will free Snowden and Assange on 'day 1') -against mandates and police state-like policies -classical liberal sensibilities with respect of others (without the 'woke' or fake identity politics) -vocal commitment to transparency regarding FBI, CIA, NSA over-stepping and out-stepping -would put the federal budget on blockchain to be fully transparent for all citizens -passionate about environmental and ecological concerns -passionate about investing in regenerative farming practice -passionate about cleaning our food supply and exposing the unhealthy ingredients in processed 'foods' -wants to bring preventative health more into public discourse; nutrition, exercise, etc -will immediately close the border (this is not some republican scare issue, it is a very major issue - for many reasons) -will send the necessary Asylum Judges to the border to expedite the process for legal migrants -has an excellent plan to make homes affordable for all, including a program that backs mortgages at 3% and a tax structure to keep Black Rock from continuing to buy everyone out (this also will bring rent costs down dramatically) -due to his family/background, he's well-learned from the inside of the various power structures -due to his decades as an attorney successfully taking on major corporations, as well as government regulatory corruption, he is exceptionally well-suited for taking on the myriad of corporate capture over our government *I wrote the list above many months before Oct 7, 2023. I should add, especially directed towards my brothers and sisters of the populist 'left' and populist 'right', 'progressives', 'libertarians', and people who are just antiwar, in general... -RFK Jr. is in support of Israel (as am I). However, this in *no* way means he isn't also in support of helping the innocent people within Gaza. RFK Jr. has always been very aware of the conditions for the people within Gaza, and is especially aware of, and feels deep heartache for, the Hell they are living in now. As President, he is a person who would do all he could to help seek lasting peace and prosperity for all in the region -although RFK Jr. is a supporter of Israel, he is not a fan of Netanyahu, and has said repeatedly that he would *not* be writing him a blank check with American dollars to do with as he wishes -there is no one who would fight harder or more tirelessly to reach out to everyone involved, as well as to leaders outside of the region, to try to negotiate and implement a sustainable peaceful solution for both the Israelis and the Palestinians. RFK Jr. would bring many ideas and a commitment to approaching the problem there from several different angles, and involving several other players. In fact, he would have been doing this before Oct. 7. (Simply yelling 'apartheid', 'genocide', etc is *not* in service of an actual *solution* - ask Hamas) -and unlike anyone from the 2 major parties who supports Israel, RFK Jr. would never be lead by the corrupt (and disgusting) sheer financial interests of the Military Industrial Complex when it comes to *any* of America's foreign policy; including with Israel

It’s an amazing feat of illogic that so many commenting on this conversation came away with the conclusion that the solution to the problem and ensuring American democracy survives is to vote for the one man who poses the greatest threat to American democracy since Jefferson Davis. The way to support Judaism is not to sell out our core values by voting for someone whose entire life represents the antithesis to Jewish values. My models of an ideal Jewish life were not arrogant liars, cheats, philanderers, adulterers, racists or con artists.

I just saw a clip where a journalist & crew were threatened by two Middle Eastern looking men and someone in back threw a bottle at them. This was in Australia ( don’t know name of school) and something caught my attention & I had to re- view it. The main man threatening the journalist had grey in his beard. Returning student? I don’t think so. I believe we NEED to send someone into those crowds, with a scarf on or in some way look like them so they’re not in danger and LOOK for OBVIOUS Agitators & representatives from terrorist organizations. Wander through & talk JUST enough to know if this is American or Australian or from where they come. Better idea- don’t go in alone & have someone else out of view take pictures of these people !!! We’re not yet aware how many students are not going to get over it, go back to school, home, SUMMER VACATION & how many are actually being RECRUITED to get in deeper in terrorist cells!!! There’s some REAL DANGER there!

That antisemitism on a select number of college campuses is on the rise is indisputable, but rather than surrendering to this trend I would argue that it makes more sense to challenge the misconceptions responsible for nurturing these beliefs. It is difficult to envision Southern institutions of Higher Education ever freeing themselves from their hundreds of years of intolerance and discrimination of their non-White residents. The recent efforts of State Departments of Educational in a number of to ban the Diary of Ann Frank captures this in willingness to understand the Jewish experience. If SMU or TCU experiences an influx of Jewish students, how do you expect thier alumni will react to this increase in diversity? In short, I'd rather stand and battle antisemitism, rather than surrendering to dispair.

The changes in American universities starting in the 1960s and 70s, marked by social movements and the diversification of the student population, introduced critical ideas that questioned traditional structures. Jewish intellectuals like Herbert Marcuse and Theodor Adorno, influential in critical theory and cultural studies, contributed to these transformations.
